Play offs now in reach

At least it's exciting. I'd rather be in a play off chase, relegation battle or title contention that being run of the mill with nothing to aim for or avoid.

Momentum could be huge if we're going for play offs and we're talking as if all the teams above can't drop form, plus its all very close points wise.

I find it more fun to be in some sort of scrap. Imagine being I dunno... Fulham. Won't get relegated, won't win the league, unlikely to get Europe. Nothing really to play for.

Going out on a limb here, but I think the 2005-06 automatic promotion winning team was a bit better than this one.

before we did that run we didnt know it was going to go tht well
if id have posted we are going to win 12 of the first 14 back then you would all it as impossible as us winning 10/ 11 of 14 now
wilder took us to 100 points in his first season with an 14 game unbeaten run

weve got players just starting to gel and a bit of quality
you either believe or you dont
I dont mock your negative take on it
its purely my opinion

The biggest problem is who we face should we get there and could we beat them over 2 legs, currently we are looking at Millwall or Ipswich potentially Coventry if they slip up. Then if we past that test one of those or Hull in the final. I don't want to be doom and gloom etc and definitely going to enjoy the remaining fixtures but over 2 legs, in the league up to now each of those sides are edging it over the home and away league games that we have played. We would need a home performance like the one against Ipswich to stand a chance of getting to the final and then its pot luck on the day with probably the joys of VAR being there.

We're 25/1 to be promoted .
Not impossible but highly unlikely
If your an optimist then lump on
If your a realist just enjoy the rest of the season .

I’d say Fulham probably have as much chance of qualifying for Europe via the league as we do of making the playoffs.

Whilst a part of me would like to see us get to the play offs but dreads being promoted with the current set up we have on and off the field (whipping boys again), part of me would like to see Millwall get up and stir things up a bit. Just out of sheer curiosity.

It's up to the players and management to step up and raise themselves that extra to make it happen, its not unusual for teams to make such runs to the play offs and it's how legends and reputations are forged, what gets fans talking about games and players decades later.
They need a certain amount of luck and good fortune to go with it,but it's in their hands and in their power if they take the right attitude and mentality into games and get our tactics right, you may only need 3 or 4 players to really start rising above what has gone already and hitting a new level of form and bringing the other squad players with them, because it's sometimes previously written off players who suddenly step up and make the difference.
It's already started with the last minute winner, they are what happens when you need to get on a winning or unbeaten streak.

Apart from anything else the goal difference doesn't look great, although ideal chance to rectify that on Sunday

You're so blindly optimistic about everything you think being realistic is negativity.

When we were getting hammered in the Premier League every week two seasons ago you were still trying to convince people we could stay up in January/February/March.

You don't live in the real world.

It does feel that we need a couple of marqué wins.

Portsmouth away was a good result but I’d say a poor performance in the main.

We have Coventry coming up. They just pulled out a 3-1 win against the team that was so impressive against us last week.

United need to show we are capable of similar levels and put Coventry to bed. That would be the sort of result that would make people sit up.

No disrespect but beating Wednesday, the team 24th and doomed isn’t going to do that. Neither is beating Pompey, another relegation battler.

If we’re serious we need some proper results against proper teams. Millwall was a start and Ipswich was one of those results but otherwise we’ve dishes out the points to the other top 6 incumbents.

It's not really about the number of points separating us from sixth place, it's the number of teams (the 'traffic') between us and sixth. We're not just hunting down one team, we're hunting down around nine teams. Most weeks a lot of these teams will be playing each other - when two teams play each other at least one if guaranteed to pick up points. For instance, tonight Bristol City play Wrexham - they can't both lose. One or both will put more distance between them and us tonight. This weekend four other teams in this pack play each other - Swansea v Bristol City and Watford v Derby. So at least two of those teams will pick up points. It will be similar for the rest of the season. I haven't given up hope, and I think we still have an outside chance of making the Top 6. But I think it's more like that although we will gain more ground on sixth place between now and the end of the season it won't quite be enough and we'll finish two or three points short.

Its looking like 70ish points will be enough for 6th place . The current 6th place has 48 points from 32 games , so exactly 1.5 per game, which extrapolate to 69 over a season.

We therefore need to target that and not worry about other teams. 28 more points to take us to 70 is exactly 2 a game, so 8 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats.

Unlikely, but not impossible.

It was a fantastic result for us v pompey. Every successful team manages to snatch wins when they aren't playing well. And every successful team manages to score very late winners.

This season we have been poor so far in these situations. Hopefully last Saturday gave us a boost. 14 games left..... game on!
