I think the police put the kybosh on proper "derby" fixtures over Xmas & New Year? So the brief for the fixture minions is "local if possible but not too local". No idea how we ended up playing Watford though.
Yeah you'd have thought someone like Villa or Everton would have been better, travel-wise. Close, but not too close.

April looks the worst especially if we're needing points. Also December purely for number of games but chance to change things up quickly if we're struggling

As a counterpoint to that, if you look at the fixtures in Norn Iron, some of those derbies are very tasty and have strong political undertones as well, especially from a policing standpoint.

You've got Cliftonville (Irish nationalist, Catholic) vs Crusaders (Ulster loyalist, Protestant). Always a potential flash point for trouble.

Linfield v Glentoran (same politics but a very nasty rivalry)

Then in Scotland you've got Celtic v Rangers (self explanatory) and Hibernian v Hearts ( always kicks off).

There's no reason why they couldn't give English football fans a break as far as I can see.
Not up on NI football, but upon looking Cliftonville and crusaders average 1600 & 1800, with a recent head to read securing a record crowd of 2000 - that’s on a par with Harrogate (for any pigs reading in, 2/3rd of what you take to QPR)

Not saying there isn’t bad blood, but if you sent 100 coppers to the NI match that would be a ratio of 1:20
Send same cops to Old Trafford and it’s 1:750

You can’t compare, there’s more than 2000 pissed up on West St on a Saturday night

Add to the mix in London you have 3 matches, spurs Chelsea arsenal all potentially at home equals around 150,000 people all moving around one city with reduced services on a bank holiday

I think they should keep em local, so London clubs to Luton, Bornemouth etc
And us to NW clubs

i was just looking through & cross referencing calendar & we have got very lucky with european football. as the only changes will be Brighton poteinally both Home & Away, as will be moved to remembrance sunday because they will have played their 4th group game on the thursday before. & its lookingly like that our home game will be moved 18th February because if brighton dont either finish top or bottom of the europa league group they will be in europa league & conference league round of 24 on the thursday before

Hi Stegosaurus,

That's a very winnable end of the season. We're gonna be in a relegation dogfight--and Brentford, Burnley, Forest, Everton and Tottenham are all teams we can pinch points from.

Arsenal have 2 games outside London before Bonfire night. That’s going to be a very long season for them

That computer has some odd ideas about how the fixtures are spread. Forest, Everton and Tottenham near the start, then right at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Villa and Luton return fixtures are 5 games after we first meet them.

Int owden days when i was a lad,i can remember The Blades playing Manchester United (full of household names) on Boxing Day at Bramall Lane 1964 lost 0-1 then two days later played them at Old Trafford and drew 1-1.....................these double header fixtures were quite popular during the 60's.

In 86/87 we played Hull at home boxing day and away at Stoke on the 27th.

4 london away games in not more than a month. Better start saving.

Followed by Brighton which is at the very least a "via London" awayday by train. Or practically a 5th London awayday in a row if you prefer to drink around London Bridge than Brighton.

Reviewed the fixture list. Here are my takeaways

1. Beating one of Palace or Everton is essential. We don't want a repeat of the narrative of our last PL season.

2. There is a good chance we don't pick up a win between Spurs (A) (GW5) - Arsenal (A) (GW10)

3. I think Wolves at home is the biggest games of the season. Coming off that brutal Spurs - Arsenal stretch we'll need to pick up some momentum going into what is going to be a season defining run of fixtures between Wolves (GW11) - Luton (GW19).

4. March and April are going to be brutal. We'll likely need a pts total in the high 20s by the end of Feb to have a chance at survival.

5. The end of the season is relatively kind, and if we are in with a chance, those 3 games (Forest (H), Everton (A), Spurs (H)) will give us an opportunity to pick up pts.

This is what I think our pathway to survival is by month (38 pts has been enough for survival for the last decade):
