Would be a big step up for our youth set up having an experienced first team manager heading it up

But his experience developing young players certainly is necessary for that job, and he has that in adbundance.Would it? I’d rather just have a really good youth coach that can help develop the players into first team players. I don’t think first team managerial experience is wholly necessary for that job. Kevin Blackwell is an experienced first team manager – if we appointed him to look after our youth set-up it would be anything but a step up. That’s not to say Heckingbottom is a bad choice, just that his first team experience should be secondary to experience developing young players.

Isn't that what he was doing at Barnsley, and then Leeds before Bielsa replaced him?
The point was about how the first team experience aspect shouldn’t be a big factor. My point was we should be saying whoever is appointed, be that Heckingbottom or whoever: “it’s a real coup getting someone in that has a great record developing young players”. You can probably apply that to Heckingbottom, so that’s the important thing in this.
I hope if he’s appointed he does well, but we really need some stability in the Academy to develop a long term project. My only concern about Heckingbottom is that if he’s any good he may still be drawn away by first team ambitions.
If he joins us, I think he’ll be a Knill type; had a go at first team management, decided it wasn’t for him and goes back into what he loves doing, coaching. The point was about how the first team experience aspect shouldn’t be a big factor. Get him working with the first team too, as an attacking coach.... has to be worth a go.
My understanding is that he will be working under Lester. In the same way as Del Geary works under Lester. I've no idea why Andrew Hughes has left (a while ago now). Given he was recruited into the U23 role around a year ago. I'll stand to be corrected, but I think the objectives of the Academy are clear - produce players. But, HOW. Not a great deal has been said about the strategy since Binnion left. I can say with some confidence - I'll be amazed if any coach/head of Academy makes it as enjoyable as it all was under Travis. So, in that sense - not excited. My views are an acquired taste - I just want to enjoy the Academy. Watching Trav work with Dom & Brooksy and others was v enlightening & a joy. But, times change. It's all a bit revolving doors at Shirecliffe at the mo'. ICYMI, Leeds, Palace & Burnley are all being audited for their proposed elevation to Category 1 Academy status. (We're anchored at Cat 2)

Is this what we've become - a cult? He'll come here if Wilder wants him, if he doesn't, he won't.
I’m disappointed it’s not Alex Scott , now that would get the young uns goingI'm disappointed he isn't black.
I think it was meant as a backhanded compliment Phil ,Is this what we've become - a cult?
Allow yourself some time off.I'm disappointed he isn't black.

I remain relaxed about our Category. It's very very difficult to get a youngster, any youngster into a PL Squad. They have to be outstanding. I think we can attract youngsters on the basis of Ramsdale, Dom, Brooks recent track record & our Premier League status. My simple view is I'm not convinced Cat 1 is worth the effort for a club like ours. And, I know people disagree with that. And I'm not digging in. It's OK to disagree. We need Cat 1. Ludicrous that Leeds could be nicking our best youngsters.
