Paul Coutts

Judging by the noises around a lack of midfielder targeted, I now find myself having to buy into the concept that our successful campaign rests on everything clicking for Coutts becoming the League One Pirlo - a bloke I found myself comfortably describing but 2 games ago as non-scoring, non-assisting, non-tackling yet tidy midfielder with the heart of a pea.

Get me on that Bladeacoaster right away!

My pond is getting fuller.

Didn't he have a not very well documented row with Adkins during a game last season. Might be a sign that he also thought Adkins was a clown and was as confused tactics wise as the rest of us?

Coutts could he a key player for us at this rate. In a team where we press and play at a high tempo, the he is the one in midfield who can pass a ball.

If he's in that role and the rest of the team are chasing around for him then we might just see his quality.

If fit, Coutts will become Wilders first name on sheet.

Poor today for me. I'm not saying it for the sake of it - I've praised his performances this season. That was the Coutts of old for me.

We were good overall though.

Outshone the highly rated Dack though ??

Defo a marmite type player. But what he does well he does better than any player in L1. Proper baller.

IMHO.

I thought Coutts did ok today

As Reedy says tho his contribution in terms of assists and goals is poor, but he holds the team together around the middle of the park and one could argue possession is 9/10's of the law (except we keep giving it away :D)

I think we are better with Coutts there than him not being there

Did he? Not for me.

I fight against the marmite tag. I'm aware we're all prone to getting hung up with our opinions and I remind myself of it when judging. His composure stood out in our previous home games, when nobody else was calm on the ball. Just thought he was the usual okay, but unbusy self today, and others had more composure around, hence he strengths not standing out so much..

Neat and tidy player that would be more acceptable if we had a creative midfielder alongside him, but we don't.

He didn't see as much of the ball today though.

I think he is a terrific technical footballer. You might not agree and, I would accept, it's you that might be right when all is said and done.

But, in my mind at least, in all the hustle and bustle of a typical L1 midfield battle, where men need to be men, someone, somewhere needs to get the ball down and play.

On Tuesday Coutts played (mainly) just in front of defence, allowing Fleck to go further forward... for me, he dictated the game from there. He's comfortable in possession and can pick pass. I like Bash, but a midfield pairing of Coutts and Fleck would be my choice.

I do agree he's an excellent technical footballer. If he can ever find / regain an engine, he'd be a real asset. He doesn't impose himself on games enough - I just don't think he's able to, it's not laziness. But given our lack of incomings in central midfielders, there's a lot resting on him proving me wrong. It goes without saying I want him to.

Not every midfielder has to offer lots of goals and/or assists. You sometimes need players like Coutts to nit things together and keep the game ticking over.

Today wasn't his best game, but he was still very effective and was useful in possession. He looks a lot fitter now too, back to back 90 minute league games completed for him I think which is hopeful. Still don't think he can cut it in a midfield 2, but as part of a 3 I think he has a role to play.

Played well, bit more movement than previous ..and Wilder's put players around him so he doesn't get caught out as much struggling to keep up..good management.

What game did you watch?

He was very good and I've been his biggest critic.

I thought that too, he seemed to work harder than he did last season. I hope thst's because he's finally fit, rather than just trying a bit harder.

For example, and I can't see that anybody's mentioned it, he chased a lost cause in their left hand corner and got the throw in. He took the throw, the ball was crossed in (Lafferty?) and three touches later, we'd equalised.

Yep first time that's been mentioned people would much rather slag someone off for not jumping in a wall.

Think it's a case of saying what you'd have liked to have seen, rather than what was actually there. Or just getting a bit carried away. A fair bit of exaggeration going on with Coutts, solid enough today but no more than that.

For me he was the one who made us tick, set us off..took the ball under pressure, turned away from opposition players and passed it off to a United shirt in space,.always looking to take the ball and link the play, and did a decent enough job without the ball.

Correct. But not everyone can see this obviously. Just hope Wilder can see it.

As there was last season when I seemed to be in a very small club extolling the merits of a very good footballer .
