Outgoing? Paul Coutts

Is it fair to him to be in the line of fire so soon after injury?

I'm concerned that should Norwood be out suspended or injured we turn to a Paul Coutts operating at 60% and expect too much.

If there is money to spare at all Vaulks would be better in the matchday squad right now.

Coutts would do better getting some games on loan where there would be less expectation and get his fitness up and a good preseason rather than being in the matchday squad for us pushing for top two.

With Lundstram not being up to it, one injury to Fleck or Norwood and we are quite exposed in my opinion

Anyone share the concern?

Coutts made his first time return on 3rd October, surely he can’t be at only 60% after four months.

If Norwood or Fleck weren’t available for any length of time, no doubt Coutts would be playing.

To me, Wilder is just picking his best team and unfortunately for Coutts he isn’t in that team. After his injury and being 30, there is certainly a possibility that his contract won’t be renewed, especially if he’s on fairly high money.

Coutts is alright where he is. He's a big part of the changing room and from what we've been told, someone who brings a lot to the training pitch.

Sold too soon...

A growing concern I do have with Coutts is that this most recent injury, following several in his career, might be one too many and that rather than his current abilities being a result of rustiness and lack of match action it might be more of a cumulative effect of those injuries. We won’t really know till after pre-season, but the Barnet game, his first real opportunity to get a proper start in his preferred position after months back in full training now, was not encouraging.

Again how can coutts prove that he’s as good ? Better or worse ?

You can’t judge coutts till he plays and started a few games

Very harsh but very true.

What needs to happen if Coutts is to come on is that he needs to play in his favoured role meaning Norwood either comes off or moves up the pitch slightly, Coutts coming on where he does is neither good for him or us, he looks unfit and more importantly lost.

Coutts before his injury couldn’t play the role any better, it’s a tad confusing then why Wilder when bringing him on deploys him where he does, as I say, it does no one any favours.

Has Norwood even been subbed once?

Playing him further up is a non starter, especially now we've got Dowell.

Wilder had the perfect opportunity to get Coutts, Fleck and Duffy back together at Wigan but didn't bother. I can't believe he hasn't yet.

If Norwood gets 3 yellows in the next 8 games he'll get a suspension, so it's extremely likely Couttsy will get a chance back in the heart of midfield soon.

I respect people’s sentiment but ultimately Norwood > Coutts and both play the same role.

Coutts isn’t a bad option at all to have in Norwood’s absense but I can’t see him ever being the Coutts of Aug 2016-Dec 2017 again. Would love to be proved wrong though.

You are right but to be fair, when he did come on at Wigan he did play more in his favoured role at the side of Norwood just to help us keep hold of the ball. That game was a walk in the park though so it was hard to gauge where he’s at in his recovery.

What is noticeable is that he hasn’t come on much since.

Then I will be one of the not many !!

And as regards the contract, it would be madness to let this run down.

UTB
I made no reference to his contract whatsoever. Of course, running it down would be silly.

I’d hope to see Coutts playing regularly for us again, but just can’t see him displacing Norwood, or where he fits instead of that position.

But either the manager can, or he should ensure we received a good fee for him.

Yes, Norwood moved to the right of a 3 in that game, with Coutts in the centre and Fleck on the left...I noticed it looked a little awkward at times as they passed it between themselves, like neither wanted to direspect the other by taking responsibility.
I've always been a big Coutts fan,but for me Norwood moves the ball quicker, and tries to move it forward more...plus i'd say a better range of passing and more of a goal threat...although he does give it away at times and has the odd spell where he goes off the boil.
Coutts only gets on now when we want to sure things up,and he's only going to get back to his old self with more game time...He has looked ok though when called upon.

He hasn't, if you wanted to know

Bumping this one....

Anyone know what the situation is with Coutts? Does his contract run out in the summer or has an extension been triggered?

I think it would be a shame to see him released on a free, but it wouldn't surprise me. Hasn't really featured much since January and I can only guess that Wilder may wait to see what league we'll be playing in before deciding whether to offer a new contract or not.

There's some hope of a new deal after Wilder went out of his way to praise his step up in performance after the training camp abroad (see Wilder's pre Bristol interview).

On one of the PNE message boards at the weekend, somebody casually asked if the Coutts on our bench was the one that played for them, suggesting his stay there wasn’t that memorable. I find that surprising, he was even club captain for a while.

The PNE fans I know loved Coutts and were gutted when I told them we were signing him.

He would most probably have an appearance based one year extension trigger, which of course won’t be activated unlike with for instance Sharp, who did trigger the extension and then extended a further year as well.

Which will leave it down to the club ultimately wanting to give him a new deal. Or not !!

Make no mistake, the pre injury Coutts would be able to cut it in the PL.

The question is, does he still exist ?

Think his time is up here it’s sad to admit.

Even if we don’t go up he’s 31 this summer and needs to be playing regular we need to be looking to further improve rather than accommodate and reminisce.

Good question DB. Until Coutts injury he more than held his own in the Championship, and the trio of PC, Fleck, and Duffy were as good as ever. That type of injury can devastate a player, and no amount of bravado can hide the doubt that may exist inside. For what it's worth, I think some faith and encouragement may result in us retaining the excellent skill-set that Coutts has to offer. It would also save this club a few million at Prem prices, but there are variables at work here, so it's impossible to tell to what extent it's possible to know whether we'll see the Coutts that was as good a footballer as we've seen in a Blades shirt for the last 3 decades.....but I think he's worth the effort, not out of sentiment, but just because he may still have so much to offer, and if that were to happen, then he may be one of those players who would contribute to us remaining in the Premiership (yes I know, we have to get promoted for that to happen, just call me a dreamer!)

This. Combined with the players willingness to sign a short term deal and prove his worth, on not bonkers money.

Rumour of huge bust up with Madine last week. Team divided over it.

Doesn’t make the 18 today.

Writing does indeed appear to be on the wall.

Shame :(.
