exaggerated for humour purposes. check it out sometime ;)
Exactly and exaggeration also highlights the point, when top class athletes are carrying 3 extra pounds (for sake of argument) it will have a detrimental effect on their performance in training, recovery and in a match. Games are won and lost on moments where a split second makes a difference.

I probably did exaggerate a tad with 2 stone overweight. Thing is though, look at Harry Maguire at the World Cup. Looks to me as he’s lost half a stone, improved even further. Harry Kane is now ultra fit and lean. This what they should be aiming for.

Everyone knows that black is more slimming, that's why all the fat birds wear black.

We've removed some black from our home kit so they all look fatter. We need Gok Wan to come in and do a make over

Because they looked incredibly fit. Ripped Stoke apart. Had significantly higher fitness levels than a team coming down from the Premier League. Played high press for 90 minutes.

His win record is impressive but he burns teams out. Normally takes a couple of years though!

I doubt very much if anyone is anywhere near two stone overweight.

I dream of days when I wake up only 2 stone overweight.... if only..

Bastard, I clicked on here thinking I'd found a club for similar individuals.
Feeling very let down at the moment!!

Me too.

I was disappointed to find that this thread wasn't about me.

See you on the dieting thread chaps.

Lundstram has always looked heavy but maybe his slow reaction makes it look worse. Clarke is a big bloke - it's hard work getting sharp when you're 33

Swansea looked faster all over the pitch. That was much more concerning than Boro where we just didn't defend

I hope we Nick a few points soon - can't afford to use the first 8 games as an extended pre season (although you can usually get away with the first 4, we've just had a tough start)

Reckon it’ll last a season?

Lundstram looks like a rugby player to me. Not necessarily overweight but carrying too much weight in the wrong places.

Ladies and Gentlemen - we should worry…..yet he plays for England and must be monitored to the max so maybe the issue is more complex than people assuming he’s a fat bastard just because he doesn’t look like a jockey?

I often think that he looks heavy when he's running... but thats because footballers are so lean and ripped now.

While watching "The Big Match" on ITV 4 yesterday, 1975 games. It is really apparent how much fitter the players today look compared to then.
The athleticism of today's footballers are way ahead of past players.

very much agree….you hear stories how some players were still half drunk from the night before (like George Best) but still performed well.

also when you look at games from the 60’s and 70’s players had more time on the ball.
These days what you do out of possession has become so important.
Pressing and closing down opponent players had become a big factor in modern football.

I think back to Keith Edwards..….great finisher…one of the best I’ve seen at one on ones with just the keeper to beat.
but he rarely closed anyone down and rarely tackled…when he tried he always gave away a foul…it’s a different game now.

Difficult to compare though, imagine fleet footed Dan James running through a quagmire.

Excellent point….also it was more a physical game then.
The first bad tackle and early tackles were allowed by refs….so some teams used to deliberately target the danger men to unsettle them.
You had players (Ron Harris, Norman Hunter, Graeme Souness) who made their reputation from regularly putting in hefty challenges and not even being booked.

I remember Alex Sabella used to be targetted as thought opposition defenders took it in turns to hack him down to weaken/ injure him.
Sabella was more like a world class 5 a side player…he liked to play the ball on the ground and always struggled when pitches were really muddy in Winter.
