After watching two abject performances, what’s annoying me is that several of the players are clearly overweight and unfit. Clarke, Lundstram, Evans, Fleck and O’Connell are clearly 1 to 2 stone too heavy. Blowing out of their arses after 30 minutes. Who’s the fitness coach nowadays??? I don’t go around town much on a weekend, has anybody seen them on the piss a few times too many? Billy Sharp is ripped at the minute yet the lumbering fat Clarke is undroppable. For the money they’re being paid, stop taking the piss out of the fans and get your arses in gear. This includes the management who should know fucking better.

Bollocks.
Nowt to do with it, match fitness off maybe but weight isn’t the issue.
It’s confidence couple with lack of direction. That first had was abysmal, we lumped it forwards and gave it away, and had no idea going forwards.
A flat theee with Fleck wider is shite. He’s our best midfield player so needs the ball more

Grow up. All the damage was done in the first 30 minutes anyway.

Thought this myself, several have definitely piled on the pounds over the summer. Look very immobile.

Not so sure.

Clarke isn't overweight, but he is off the pace.

Fleck has always had a big arse, but otherwise just looks clueless alongside Evans and Lunny. Different gravy with Duffy on the field.

Take your point on Lunny, weight and fitness wise.

Evans just looks bang average at the minute.

JOC I can't really tell because he doesn't look much different if I am honest, but people keep saying it is obvious he has had his head turned?

I don't get out much these days either so not sure about their after hours pursuits.

I’ve mentioned it a couple of times, but seeing pictures of Clarke in a sweat suit surprised/concerned me. It’s a clumsy, old school way of shifting weight, and it shouldn’t need to be being done by the club captain, at his stage of his career, so close to the start of the season, after less than two months off, ffs. He’s a professional athlete, ffs.

I dropped off a letter in town after the game on Saturday, and as I drove back up london rd, a few players were stood outside the mango tree. Not saying that they were on the piss, but it surprised me. About an hour after final whistle, still in tracksuits.

I doubt very much if anyone is anywhere near two stone overweight.

Well, if they hit the booze hard in the summer the management can't complain too much because they hardly discourage it.

Evans and Lundstram are the main ones who need to be leaner. They're young central midfielders in the Championship. And they don't have the talent to get away with it. They need to maximise their mobility but they're no better than they were last season.

Where is mango tree?? Never heard of it

Things clearly aren’t quite right or going our way at the moment but fitness isn’t an issue. Clarke, Sharp, McGoldrick, it doesn’t matter. With the exception of one chance for Leon tonight we have created virtually no clear cut chances for strikers so far. Billy can have a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger but it’s difficult when you hardly see the ball and have to keep dropping deep for it. The moment Duffy came on the dynamics changed with Leon and Woodburn looking to make angled runs into the box

Clarke has simply reverted to type, a routine which he's followed throughout his career. It's a measure of the man.

Momentarily putting aside the disappointment that follows the two defeats, it seems that the best anyone has is an 'opinion' about any player and their weight.

Reasons need to be found to support the way we played, and carrying excess weight seems to be the latest explanation for losing our opening games.

Suggesting that players are seen outside a local drinking hole seems to be the best validation for putting on weight. It's about as scientific an explanation as that most feeble of oxymorons, "I know for a fact". No you don't, you're just attempting to rationalise a statement that has no basis in fact. By all means, if there's a foundation to any of this it needs to be addressed, but expecting anyone to follow the same ill-logical path does more damage than good.

I don't think United lost these two opening fixtures because Clarke is overweight and torpid, I just think that they were beaten by two better sides.

Swansea are an ex-PL outfit, and 'Boro are widely expected to take one of the two automatic spots.

I didn't think that the Swans played better football than United at the weekend, for example, but I just think that they had better all-rounders who made the right decisions at the right time.

A better test will be the next fixture, although unless Tufty can loan in more quality then fans may have to accept this season being more like the one which many thought last season would be. Let's face it, when a team gets promoted into a higher division, after the first season up there generally needs to be significant investment even to tread water the next. Coutts can't come back quickly enough.

It's not only about the start of the season, we were like it for a fair bit of last season too. We regularly looked knackered after 65-70 mins in the second half of the season. You have to ask yourselves why we never seemed to score after 70 mins, but we let in plenty........

didnt' see last night so can't comment but Swansea were tip tap powder puff until the sub came on . we should have been three up by then.. last years team would have mullered them

We can't claim to be a fit team anymore with Lundstram and Evans in the key central midfield position.

We're below average in this department.

We have nobody above 6 foot 2.
We have nobody with pace.
We have few players with good stamina.

Athletic as fuck aren't we.

Whatever problems we might have weight & fitness have nothing to do with them. The way players are monitored these days there is no way an unfit/overweight player would get anywhere near the first team. Stand next to any modern day footballer, they are proper athletes, it is laughable to suggest it could be the case.

Let's bring back Kevin Blackwell then.

Wasn't Jordan Stewart over six foot, very athletic and had a bit of pace?

It's weird, because at some point we looked extremely fit, was pressing high up the pitch and that started with the front two.

We seem to have either lost that fitness, or the directive has changed.

It's true I saw Jack o Connell a couple of weeks After the season ended and I was flabbergasted how skinny he looks close up

People seem to be confusing fitness with mobility. Watch how "fit" players suddenly look when mobility improves with the addition of Duffy and Woodburn.

1) Stearman, Moore
2) Baldock, Leonard
