Fitness and conditioning

Kingy, Farke alluded to our approach in his post match interview. He was very complementary about our first 30 mins but said he knew we couldn't keep that pace up all game and that it took a lot out of us.

Although our use of subs has been a lot better this season last night Leeds replaced Aaronsen and Gruev with Rothwell and Joseph on 58 min whereas our 3 'runners' Souza, Peck and Ohare played the full game. That matters when you only have 42% possession. Especially when you have poured a lot of effort into the first half an hour
Yes Friethblade they made the difference changes in the engine room.
We also ran out of legs in other areas ! I mentioned in another post our lack of conditioning due to players coming in late so a broken pre-season for some.
We have a bigger squad now ! Just the lack of conditioning ( game time) is a problem we have to work though with the new loans.

Bogle is a perfect example, at Leeds he looks fit as a fiddle and is never injured, for us he was never off the treatment table.
Tbf - after a bad knee issue with us in 22/23, Bogle has been pretty much ever present since the start of last season - he played 34/38 games (available for 35) in the prem last year and one of those was missed through suspension. His fitness and availability has been actually been pretty good/consistent since about Jan 2023.

Shackleton is basically a replacement for Osborn in a way and he's had more injury issues. He was our first signing and that took a while so was he just a body to bring in?

Also haven't Bogle, Osborn and Lowe played nearly every game for their new clubs? (Injured alot here)
Anyone got the appearance stats on them 3 this season? Injured alot for us.

Sorry if already posted

Sheffield United have conceded 5 goals in their last 4 fixtures.

All 5 goals came after the 70th minute...
Despite another ‘best window ever’ we don’t have a team fit enough to run around for 90 mins. Inevitably we brought in non-match fit players in January to replace the injured ones we already had and it might cost us 2nd place.

There is a problem with fitness at the club. Every interview Wilder does today he mentions managing minutes.
In 2019 he was the opposite, have the so called sports scientists influenced him?
Seems every knock turns into a scan that turns into lengthy spell on the side lines.
Bring back the magic sponge and Frenchy's bench.

Just look when Wednesday score and in Feb and March they've scored 8 goals after 60 minutes.

Therefore makes perfect sense why he often makes a double or triple substitution around the 60 minute mark.

The Bristol players looked a lot fitter than ours and never stopped running it’s been a problem for us for a while
It looks as though they are fitter ! Just that they were more mobile as a team when stats are shown the difference in workrate will be small if at all.
They supported each other better allways had someone wanting the ball. Its just keep ball most of the time . Most teams do this ! city persevered and played some positive stuff while we sat deep giving them incentive to push.
No doubt though! we have a fitness issue ! We don't usually rush players back from injury ! It's hard to put your finger on the reason maybe too many squad members coming In late in both Windows is a big reason.Dont beleave it's due to poor conditioning by the trainers.

As well as physical fitness, could it also be tactics related?

What are the season possession stats?

We all know its a lot more tiring playing football chasing a ball, than being in control of it.

I often see stats on here that show our possession is below our oppo, but i dont know if those stats are found by people who just want to bash and other stat providers show things differently.

Cardiovascular Endurance to stay the full 90 mins.
Strength in you upper body and legs and core.
Endurance to maintain effort for extended periods.

Individuals all differ, some can push themselves beyond normal limits some just fold and give in.......its visible in all sports.

We're pretty midtable so I don't think it's much of a factor. Average 50.3% possession per game this season looking at fbref, which is 11th most in the league.

We've also only lost three games in games where we had less than 50%, two to Leeds and the away game at Middlesbrough. We've lost four games where we had 60% or higher (which does make sense as teams were protecting the lead and we couldn't break them down).

I'm not sure having the ball or otherwise has been much of a factor in fitness, from that.
