My stepson is working to raise money for the charity "Action for Children" at the moment he is looking for raffle prizes. Two signed footballs seemed like a good idea at the time and all went well at the sty, he bought the ball and asked if they could get the players to sign it. Not a problem he left the ball and picked it up the next day signed by the pigs squad also he was given two complimentary match tickets.
Today went a little differently, he bought a ball at the lane superstore and asked if he could get it signed by the players only to be told they were not allowed to be asked. He then enquired at the main reception only to be told they don't do this sort of thing as they already support 11 charities, and that if the players signed footballs for everyone that asked then a signed football would mean very little to people, Oh and they may send him two complimentary match tickets.:thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown:

I thought this club were big on supporting local charities/communities etc, it would seem not anymore, all the help he got from reception was the advice to stand at the players entrance on Saturday and ask the players himself. How helpfull :rolleyes: in contrast to those at S6 who bent over backwards to help a worthwhile cause.

Signs of us forgeting what allowed us to overtake Wednesday in the first place.

That really is poor. I remember asking for a ball to be signed for a village gala when Dave Bassett was the man - and it was signed within 24 hrs at no cost at all.

I'm shocked by this - I always took pride in the thought that we were a club that supported it's community (FURD etc) - but this is garbage.

Upsets me more than the performances in some ways!!

I've seen loads pof posts like this over the last few years, whilst we were overtaking Wendy.

Like it or not, the club has chosen to support a fixed number of charities. I don't think it's a new thing.

UTB

They don't do this kind of thing as they already support 11 charities?????
Err i don't care how many charities they bloody support. Helping out another charity is a good and noble thing. Pitiful excuse to me that.

Of course, the PR dept can't put out a load of spin on a small jesture such as this they were not even asked to donate the football ffs all it would take is a little bit of effort and time.

Then again the chosen charities offer much wider spin/publicity opportunities such as this.......http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/Community/0,,10418~1834433,00.html

Out of interest, have you tried contacting someone like Mick Rooker?

I've never known the blades flatly refuse something like this, I understand they must get innundated, but I've never known them be anything but helpful in cases like this.

Foxy, people should not have to go begging to Mick Rooker, I know Mick and yes he is a very hepfull bloke who I'm sure would help out, but he has more to do than sort everyones little problems. The outlook of the club is piss poor.

I know they shouldn't and I know what a busy guy and a legend he is, so don't want to advocate bugging him without reason :)

I was just trying to help you out in the situation, not improve the outlook of the club, I'm surprised and a bit disapointed having experienced the complete opposite in the past.

In the past it's been fairly easy to get items for fundraisers of on kind or another. The Woodseats branch of the Supporter's Club used to have a yearly auction to raise funds, including various signed stuff. Now, I appreciate that the club can't give to every cause, but we were told that the match worn/player issue stuff all goes to corporate sponsors these days. Whatever the case it's it seems that we have been bypassed by Wendy on this occasion.

I sent an email to the club when Bryan Robson was manager and I was fundraising for Weston Park hospital.
I asked for two match day tickets. The very next day I had a phone call from Mick Rooker asking me to go down to the club and collect the tickets. Mick came out to meet me when I arrived,as well as two tickets gave me a signed ball and a signed Robbo auto biography. Top man is Mick.
I also wrote to Wednesday who sent me two tickets,

Metal, along with listening to low quality music, do you still patrol the same beat for SUFC on matchdays?

If you do, it's even more surprising.

No pal, I packed it in and have had a season ticket for the last two seasons to get the loyalty points up, the only beat I patrol now on matchdays is the Sheaf House. Nice to see you and your friends posting on here well except Judge and his one line pearls of wisdom LOL.

United already do support many charities and not with the same fanfare and PR as our near neighbours. I also know of people why have had the opposite response when asking for help from the pigs as well. So I do appreciate it must be a bit disappointing not to get the ball signed, but taking this one incident as the indicator that Wednesday are now the better club is a bit of a big leap, don't you think?

I've not asked for anything signed for probably 20 years but back then I left my autograph book at the reception, picked it up the week after and it had most of the team's scribbles on it. Deano and Agana, Bryson, Tracey, all first teamers, so it does disappoint me that the club now refuses to do things for charities. I understand that eBay and such things have probably spoiled things for the genuine fan but it still makes me a little sad.

Actually, my Auntie got a 90th birthday card signed for my Grandad a few weeks ago and I remember her saying she'd been told they "don't normally do this kind of thing".

Where did I say Wendy was a better club ?

Things seem to have changed greatly since the eras of Bassett and Warnock ,when it was basically access all areas and nothing was too much trouble. Those 2 guys had an affinity and a connection with the club and (most) fans and that attitude reflected through the club from the best player to the laundry woman. I think the club have drifted away from the supporters since the appointment of Robson and has become too distant from the normal every day fans. Unless there is a drastic change in attitude on and away from the pitch crowds are going to drop and interest will die down.

I can understand that if every Tom Dick or Harry turned up asking for balls, shirts, pictures etc to be signed then it would become a major chore for the players. Also everyone would claim it was for a charity or come up with some sob story. Next day some of these items could be on eBay. Signed memorabilia from most clubs has long been devalued. You see them turning up at car boot sales.

Surely the approach should have been to turn up with a written request from the charity, on the appropriate letterheaded paper, and then the Club would have probably taken it more seriously.

Just a suggestion.

If United support 11 charities then surely thats good isn't it?

How many charities are there in the Sheffield Area, 100's no doubt?

Perhaps Action for Children should write to the Blades to find out how to become a Blades supported charity. Maybe that way they'll get more than just a signed ball.

I don't think the pigs can be compared to us, they're probably just glad of 2 extra fans

Maybe you are assuming he didn't, the lad has put a lot of time and effort into fund raising recently doing the sponsored fun run at Don valley, he is next going to do another run in France as well as organising race night's etc to raise funds. Maybe the club are assuming he is just another Tom, Dick or Harry who knows, as others say in Bassets days the club seemed to have more affinity with the ordinary fans, over the last few years I think we have lost a little bit of that. I am disappointed that the best they could offer was advice to stand at the players entrance on Saturday (great advice as the players jump out of their 4x4's on Shoreham St and sneek in the backdoor)
