Our worst ever strikers

The worst (or most disappointing) that I can remember off the top of my head were:

Chris Guthrie -I think that he was our first £100K player
Barry Hayles - brilliant for Fulham but didn't want to play for us
Craig Beattie - His lack of ability and endevour cost us a nailed on promotion
Connor Sammon Fabulous start early on, especially for us against Peterboro' away
but couldn't be bothered after that
Higdon-Started off mediocre and then got worse

The above list has lost my will to carry on, it has left me traumatised just thinkhow awful they were:eek:

Speaking of Ashley Ward and that game v Leeds, I recall the game and goals but not the performance. One thing I can remember is Brian Deano getting into a tussle with Bromby and everyone giving Deane abuse, was quite surreal.

Anyway, here are the highlights

Crowd of only 23k - quite a surprise that for a derby against the dirties

couldn't even kick the ball properly
Not sure he counts because no way did we sign him to play football and we all know it!o_O

So many to choose from!

My attempt to identify our worst striker in each of the last 10 seasons:

2016 Connor Sammon
2015 Michael Higdon
2014 Billy Paynter (with an honourable mention for Lyle Taylor)
2013 The 3-headed combination of awfulness: Forte-Ironside-Poleon
2012 Michael O'Halloran
2011 The second coming of Marcus Bent
2010 Ched Evans
2009 Craig "Shit Bastard" Beattie
2008 Luton Shelton
2007 Luton Shelton again

Worst all time: Paul Williams (very nice bloke though)
Clubhouse leader for this year: Leon Clarke

Steven Davies - for missing that sitter in the playoff first leg vs Swindon

Craig Beattie was poor

4. Craig Beattie - his 'performance' at Wembley against Burnley remains the most heartless and disgraceful from an individual player I've ever seen for us. How the fuck can you not make an effort in a play off final? Disgrace

2009 Craig "Shit Bastard" Beattie

We only signed as we had a massive pile of pre-printed "Beattie" shirts in the shop and McCabe didn't want to chuck them out.

Mind you, we never sold another one after people had seen wonder boy Craig play.

Don't get why Shaun Miller's name keeps cropping up.

Looked a decent enough prospect until he did his cruciate ligaments. Hardly a Sammon type.

There absolutely no way Wayne Allison should be even mentioned in passing in any "worst striker" list. He was such an important player in that special 2002/03 season. He offered something other than goals – a list of our worst ever strikers should be ones that contributed absolutely nothing.

Agreed. Cadamarteri was OK as well.

Right. As it goes, I bloody loved the bloke & he scored against the pigs, but have we really got to page 5 of this without a single mention for Laurent D'Jaffo??

Fond memories of the Kop laughing every time he made a heroic 3 inch leap trying to flick on a goal kick, and of a diving header at the back stick in front of the Kop about an inch out, hit the back of his head and cleared it off the line.

Purveyor of some of my favourite shit moments down the Lane- but I spose heroically shit is still shit

Ridiculous. The Lion of Hillsborough was OK, limited but alright. He was paid tuppence as well and judging by his suits was the worst dressed Frenchmen ever.

Toss up between Duggie Brown and Paul Williams. No-one else comes anywhere near. I have no idea how they became pro footballers.

Special mentions for Ten Shuvels and Micky Guy.

As with others, Duggie Brown, Paul Williams and Mickey Guy and to complete a quartet I would add Don Peattie.

When you judge this award on money paid, level played in, goal ratio and overall contribution, Connor Sammon is the winner by mile.

I don't think I have ever witnessed a more nesh & ineffective striker.

Lyle Taylor probably in there too.

Anyone who mentioned Chief - Shame on you. Anyone who scores against the pigs automatically doesn't get described in the "worst of" category.
While I make do defence of Sammon whatsoever, based on your criteria of pounds shillings and pence spunked, has to be Horrenderson surely ?

£5m !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This lad Pedro Verde has got to be up there with the worst of them.

May not be entirely Verde's fault.....

According to the 'Blades Biography' section on Harry Haslam, he signed Verde simply so that Sabella could talk to someone! Haslam was then embarrassed because he'd also bought Len De Goey for £125,000 from Sparta Rotterdam. This meant we had 3 'foreign' players on the books and the rules at the time stipulated that you could only field 2! Invariably it was Verde that got left out.

Agreed. Cadamarteri was OK as well.

21 appearances and one goal.

In his entire career he has barely scored more than 5 goals a season.

Apparently he now works at Wednesday's academy. (Didn't even know they had one)
