For a team that isn't even close to playing decent football.

We're nicking points and taking advantage of teams that can't quite figure out how to score goals against us.

Just shows, you don't have to entertain to be effective.

In fairness to Danny, he's concentrated on the stuff we didn't do last season... we can start entertaining when the job is done

not conceding, we are getting down to a fine art form
some say its dull, but they are missing the nuances , and graft put in to achieve this

1-0 1-0 1-0 . We know a song about that

It's still dull as last week's dishwater. That was a truly awful game, devoid of any quality or excitement or inspiration. There was absolutely no subtlety or nuance at all in it. You can go to watch people do a heavy manual job of work if you want to watch grafters. I just wouldn't pay for the "pleasure"

We can't control the ball up front after it's lumped forward, we can't pass to each other in midfield and keep the ball, the front two are isolated as we sit deeper and deeper. It really is percentage football at low, low risk. Yes, it's based on the ability of the players we have but it's dull, insipid and painful to watch. Portsmouth played all the football and had the most creative players on the pitch.

No doubt you will point out that the end justifies the means and I cannot put up too much argument against that given the shite we have had to put up with in recent years.

Keep the coat hanger in your mouth if you like but if that's the beautiful game then god help us all.

i thought you meant that PN... disappointuing you keep repeating that

We'll play better football when we can afford better footballers. Until then we carry on being pragmatic and grinding it out. I know it won't last all year but the longer it does the bigger the buffer will be over teams below when it does.

nice to be able to complain about winning every game, now
much better than complaining about drawing at home

lets hope we get to complain about only winning the title by 2 points
as some no doubt will

Long was slaughtered by some on here last season, as hes got better , so will the team

completely agree. bored out of my mind watching that. id far rather see us play entertaining stuff and lose than play like that and nick it. that said, im willing to put up with it this season as i fear our only chance of getting the quality to play entertaining stuff is in the championship. if we dont go up this season, God help us because altho it doesnt seem like it could get worse, it would.

I'm going to have to watch it back on tv to see where I went wrong.

I actually enjoyed the game last night.

If we have to do this until May to get out of this awful division then I'll take that.

We did have some spells last night where we played some decent football, yes we are lacking some quality in the final third, although I think a lot of that is down to delivery into that area. Personally I thought Portsmouth were one of the best sides we've seen this season at the Lane, (but they should be with some of the players they can 'afford') we didn't allow them to boss the game, fair enough we sat deep at times which invites trouble but on the whole we did OK and got the valuable 3 points.

For all the knockers, remember we can't afford Messi and Xavi just yet, enjoy a win, three points and hope we get out of this division

I watched it on Sky and I agree the football is awful, but that is probably because, on the whole, our players are awful.

However, if we go up be winning 30 games 1-0 with a penalty, I won't complain.

Like others have said before me it's bloody mind numbing to watch but I'll put up with it, albeit begrudgingly, if it means us going up. Really didn't think I'd miss the quality of the Championship but this league is horrible. I've seen as much skill on some parks pitches.

Blades are deffo missing some cut and thrust in the midfield, my only worry is this is what'll be our Achilles heel when teams figure us out.

The results so far this season reflect what a good manager Danny is. We lost a lot of our attacking flair over the summer and he wasn't given a great deal of money to replace it. He's clearly taken stock and set out to first and foremost make us very solid defensively and to build upon that. Our shape does look a little rigid at times and we dont stretch the opposition very much but if we carry on with defensive displays like that we will nick most games by the odd goal.

People can say what they like about performances but we're joint top and that represents a fantastic start to the season. If we're going to score more goals we do need to find some creative width and willing runners from midfield, I think that's obvious to everyone but while we're winning games it's good enough. The manager deserves a lot of credit for our current position, given the restraints he is working under. Good work Danny keep going son!

The best I can say about us is that we are "organised"

I hate the 'everyone back for a corner' tactic - no outlet on half way to provide any semblance of relief or, indeed threat. It smacks of "we have no one with any pace or any ability to keep the ball under control so we will have every one back defending and hope the opposition put it out for a goal kick for us" - We forfeit any chance of a counter attack with that mentality. AND even when we did have everyone back there was nobody on the posts for the corner. Any deflection and it's unguarded. Don't comprehend it at all.

Equally - our set piece delivery going forward is utter, utter bobbar. With Flynn, Macca and McMahon in the team that is surely enough to get some decent crosses in with consistently enough quality.

Not sure about Blackman either. He is not a team player and gets himself down a 'cul-de-sac' on most occasions he has the ball, simply because he plays with his head down and doesn't realise what's around him. He reacts to situations so much more than he anticipates, which means he is chasing rather than leading. Izale McLeod played much better than Blackman did and he was the focal point of a front two with one playing deeper - which is harder. Blackman was way too far off Porter, who was winning stuff and knocking down only to see it go into an empty space or be picked off by the covering defender. From what I have seen, Miller offers far more movement and endeavor than Blackman - it's just Blackman has possibly a greater physical presence - that probably helps more in a defensive capacity. It was Ched's movement (once he stopped reacting and started being proactive) that got him in so many scoring positions last year. That's what I see from Miller but not Blackman.

Anyway, I'm off to do the dishes

.......and probably to call the Vet to administer that last little jab to my pooch :(

Can't agree with this Ken. I thought Izale was poor last night and did absolutely nothing of note. I was worried about him prior to the match too.

The lad gave our back four the run around - and we have the best back four in the division, don't foget - so yes, I think McLeod had a good game seeing as he was the focal point of a top two, one behind the other. His effort and running created the space for the WBA loan lad to exploit. If Allen had been any fitter throguh more game time he may have profited later on. As it is McLeod had an offside called that wasn't (like Porter did) and could have been clear through on goal.

Long was never really troubled throughout the 90 - I think the deflection off Collins was the only goalward bound effort he had to deal with. Doesn't mean that McLeod didn't cause any problems for us mind. Maguire had to be very alert to keep him under control but there were instances where McLeod wriggled free and got around our defense only to be closed out again under sheer weight of numbers.

McMahon's tackle on Harley was a 2 point saver as well.

Last year we entertained and look where it got us. This year we are awful to watch in an awful league yet our return is better. Our entertainers have gone or are in clink. Means we have to get on with it. Bearing in mind the players gone cost/would cost millions to replace I can totally understand why we are where we are.

DW has it more or less right. We are actually better set up to play away from home this season with a very solid back 4. Get a bit more spark going forwards and we might just get up this year.

Quinn, Lowton, Williamson, Evans & Lecs. Not to mention the likes of Matty Phillips who we had on loan for periods of last season. Thats lots of goals and lots of creativity gone.

Wilson seems to have (maybe by accident, maybe on purpose) built/retained a very strong spine to the team and that results in us being a solid unit that is hard to score against.

Its glaringly obvious to all that we're in need of flair, pace and width. It'll be glaringly obvious to Wilson aswell. He's not an idiot. - but whatdoyado when we're at our wage ceiling?

In the mean time, we must continue to play to the strength of the squad we have and if that means being tight, difficult to score against and grinding out results then it'll do for me.

One Nil to United. Long may it continue.

Long could have taken the night off, great defending.
Other than a good shot off the bar and some nice early runs from Allan who nullified in the second half they only threatened from corners.
Harley provided the comic sideshow and came into the game when McMahon nicely tapped Allan's ankles twice just to let him know that he had been noticed.
McMahon frustrated Harley throughout and finished it off with a nice tackle on him.
If the Blades could finish it could have been over in the first half with Blackman,Collins and Porter all missing good chances.

We have suddenly become a truly awful side to watch and it is a great shame. Promotion is the only option now for Wilson if he is going down this route. I like the bloke, like his honesty but the football has become a disgrace and people will turn very quickly if the clean sheets stop. I cannot see any possibility of that side going up and think comparison with Charlton last term are well wide of the mark. If we do go up we would be a complete laughing stock unless circa 15 new players come in with ability to hold the ball.

Seeing Williams on our left flank sickens me, seeing Cresswell come on sickens me - the thought of Doyle for another 3 years sickens me even more.

The real villain of the piece though is in tax exile in Brussells desperately tryiong to keep his property empire afloat (please see Scarborough accounts).

i'm going to have to make a judgement call soon on whether the loss of entertainment value is worth the promotion(?) if we get it.. yesterday i was too ill to attend and listened to the reports on sky sports news.. they couldn't believe a team in 3rd place was so poor.. can't say i was gutted to not sit in the cold and watch that drivel either if i'm honest..
as bootwell found to his cost.. when you don't win playing this style then the fans will soon turn on you because you haven't got the 'nice to watch' excuse to fall back on..
i'm still not sure whether i'm happy with this new approach or not, seeing as we're third i'll have to keep my mouth shut.. the next four games will tell us whether we're a busted flush or not
