Our most important player...

He had Simmonsen ,Nosworthy Mattock and Lowry for company thats why he looked shit ,Beckenbaur would have struggled with those fuckwits.

I thought Lowry (he was the centre half from Villa wasn't he?) was alright.

Nozzer was just great for comedy value.

Lowry is currently in a side comfortably mid-table in the Championship and in the FA Cup quarter finals, and Nyron is at the heart of a team second in the Championship and flying. It's a funny old world.

I reckon what we (the club) should learn from that is that you cannot rent yourself a squad each season. Even decent players turn to shite without a core of a proper team around them.

(did I just imply Nyron was decent?)

I know he's not the same player but I think we could cope with the absence of KMac with Robson as that's actually his favoured role.

At the moment I don't think he's got the fitness to play centrally in a 4-4-2, I think Wilson will only consider him an option wide right or in the hole as he played on Saturday. But maybe we shouldn't tell McDonald and Doyle that.

The key "man", as opposed to key player, is the bloke who can keep our players fit and ready to play for the rest of the season.
In my view, we have become a team that is "greater than the sum of its parts" at the moment and to keep them injury free will be the key, or at least the ability to bring someone in if required (loan window not being closed withstanding).

I agree with Houso that Collins will be the most important player in the run in. He makes a massive difference to the team. Not only a rock solid defender, but a big influence on Maguire. Look at the stats since he came back. Only 3 goals conceded in those 7 games. Of the 6 unbeaten, we have only conceded 1 goal (a spozzy free kick and goalkeeping mistake). Our form has definately dipped when Collins has not been in the team, as shown in the stats below.

This season
Without Collins
P W D L
8 3 3 2
1.5 points per game

With Collins
P W D L
27 14 10 3
1.92 points per game

Earlier this season when Collins was missing, we did ok. Hill filled in at centre half and we did fine. However recently we struggled. Hill was of course injured during this time, but (in my opinion) Higginbotom and Maguire did not play well together. There are of course other factors, but the stats are striking.

Last season
Without Collins
P W D L
4 1 1 2
1 point per game

With Collins
P W D L
42 26 8 8
2.04 points per game

Collins young un getting ill last season undoubtably cost us promotion. He only missed 4 games and those were pretty shambolic. It could be argued that the circumstances were bizarre for these games (Lowton and Maguire missing the Walsall game) but the counter to that is that if Collins had have started against Oldham we would probably not have lost and Maguire not got sent off. It is all speculation of course, but the stats show that we really missed him for the few games he missed.

There are lots of other factors (shape of team, form and experience of other defenders, K Mac and Doyle form etc) but I am a firm believer that Collins is one of the most important players in the team. The stats firmly back that up. Him and Maguire have formed an excellent partnership and they have done a brilliant job of protecting Long. I really hope Collins stays fit in the run in!!?

And therefore overall .....

Without Collins
P W D L
12 4 4 4
1.33 point per game

With Collins
P W D L
69 40 18 11
2 points per game

The sample size is a bit small without him in the team but, like I say, the difference is striking. As interesting as it would be to see how we fared without him (get that sample up to about 20) I do not want to see Collins miss nother minute of this season!

The fans will also play a big part in the last push-more so at the lane.
Getting the lane rocking will rub of on the team no doubt.
Someones in for a battering at the lane but who will it be?
As far as `the` key players, its gotta be Big Dave(neil shipperley effect) and Harry and Collins.
Weve just got to crack it at bdtbl.

Quite high for mcallister as well.

Indeed, but he didn't play that many games. Those who see Blackman as a talisman should note that he played most games of all players whose appearances showed a below average points haul.

Blackman was ever present. His record mirrors the team's exactly up to that point.

Blackman is not even remotely talisman material.

The ideal talisman is 6-3, plays centre-forward, scores goals, takes no shit from anyone and has ginger hair.

Just a football fantasy, of course. We'd never find one of those.

Think we should all wear ginger wigs to the last game of the season

If we can keep Kitson fit then we have a chance.
If we dont score goals then we wont turns draws into wins.

What stands out for me is that you have far too much time on your hands.

Really good analysis though Dazzler, thanks. :D

By this table we should have Cresswell in the side next to Kits if Forte is still injured

What is does show is how good a signing DW made with Robson. His experience will be invaluable for the run in. Cracking signing - if he can stay fit and off he cards.
