Rather than lose possession? Yes of course. If you have no one to pass to and you're under pressure, get rid, smash it up field or out of play. Do not lose possession in open play.

With that caveat then fair enough.

As said elsewhere, I'm sure, we lack movement at times and players often don't want to take responsibility; if they did, our back 4 would then have options.

When it comes to booing, I like to boo the fans who are booing, not join in with them. If that makes sense.:)

To be fair to kop fans, there was one (maybe two) occassion(s) when the fans there seemed to respond to the low level booing with some spirited and positive singing support. Unfortunately, the majority of fans both on the kop and in the rest of the ground were mostly quiet and underwhelmed. Hence the dreadful atmosphere.

I can't put my finger on when booing your own became a thing. Has it always happened and I just didn't notice it when I was a kid?
I thinks its always happened a bit but its a) got a lot more, and b) a lot more noticeable as seating has meant the mass chanting is a lot less.

However I never noticed it at away games until a few years ago.

There was one guy in the Stadium going absolutely mental at the team for that going for the throat in the first half, it was that Adkins bloke again.

I went and it was average.

Do not be fooled by the result.

Sure it could have ben 6 ,it could also have ended in a draw.

The simple fact at 2-1 and playing 10, we were negative IMHO. If we had have got a third early then it could have been different.

Well, in reality we pissed round playing back, playing it sideways when what it needed, as usual, was general in centre midfield.

Is it a moan - yes it is.........a better team with 11 could have beaten us - Playing 10 was the only reason we looked half decent.

Still plenty on work to do, as once again we seem to have experimented in midfield. Adkins, as Clough did all last season does not know his best team - I hope he decided quicker than Clough ever did.

Bloody hell there's a right ding-dong about this very issue on BBC RS.

Totally agree but I think MoTD is the perfect format for watching football. Ninety minutes - even if your team is involved - is pretty tedious. The crowd at Arsenal last night were very quiet and, at 1-0 with about ten minutes left, loads were leaving the ground.

BBC Sport looks at the numbers behind the Bavarian giants' success.

863
The number of passes attempted by Bayern, 95% of which were successful. This success percent is a new Champions League record since accurate data recording began in the 2003-04 season.

The most passes attempted against Arsenal in the Premier League this season was the 624 by Swansea in September, while Fulham are the most accurate team against the Gunners in the league this season, completing 87.3% of their 479 passes in August.

222
The number of passes attempted by Arsenal. They completed 71.2% of them. The lowest number attempted by the Gunners in the Premier League this season was 394, against Tottenham in September. The most they attempted was 803 against Hull in December.

All very impressive - especially by Bayern - but it sounded like watching paint dry. And they lost.

Give me Blades v Fleetwood any day...:D
I tried to watch it whilst following our commentary.
Bayern had a lot of possession but not in good areas, Arsenal let them pass it round in the first two thirds of the pitch but defended their last third ferociously and then tried to hit them on the counter using Walcott's pace against Bayern's high line.
Then, later in the game they put Giroud on and started to press Bayern's defenders a bit.

On another day Bayern could have scored and Cech had a blinder but it was the best tactical performance from Wenger I've seen in a long time and good execution of the tactics by his players. Not dissimilar to some of our cup exploits under N1.

The difference being, whilst we could play the tight, defensive, counter attack football that served us so well in our cup runs, we didn't, and arguably still don't have the players to dominate teams that come to the Lane to park the bus, without over committing men forward and becoming vulnerable.

McEveley found that out against Bury (I think) trying to be fancy brining the ball out from the back, got caught out and we conceded.

McEveley was carrying the ball out from the back and looking for a good forward pass - something he's actually usually good at, and the right thing to do in the situation. He was fouled.

Let's be careful to not make this debate too simplistic. There is a point to being patient and playing possession, but I think Adkins also wants us to penetrate and attack with pace when there's a chance to do so. I think the fans often notice when there's a chance to hit the opposition on the break or attack space, and players' failure to see the same can be frustrating.

A couple of examples when the movement (criticised elsewhere) was present, but the vision/passing bit wasn't there:

No through ball JCR2.jpg No through ball JCR.jpg

On both occasions JCR could have attempted through balls to players running in behind Fleetwood's defence, but chose to stop and therefore ruined the chance. Mind you we did end up scoring on the second occasion after a second wave of attack.

I think players' failure to take some of these chances to break, coupled with the team's aim to control the game, dominate possession (while not having great vision/passing ability) lead to a game of few chances and this may have contributed to the frustrated noises from some fans.

Might as well take a book to read at the next home game because that bored the fuck out of me.

I really look forward to going to the Lane as my opportunities are more limited these days and I have to say there was one moment when I caught myself more interested in the advert for Maggy May's on the tv screen than the match - god help me.

I'd say that's more a reflection of him personally. Always holds on to it for too long.

Would you say there was anyone in the starting line up who are good at making creative passes and playing through balls?
Yes.

Baxter, Coutts, Sharp, Freeman to name just 4.Appreciate only 2 of these started !

Clever, intelligent players will spot the runs and be able to deliver the pass. Which is the key reason why JCR is such a frustration. He has talent and can cause any defence problems but his decision making frequently leaves much to be desired.

Freeman had a pretty quiet game, and Sharp, playing up front, wasn't very involved in the way we built our attacks.

We, the Royal we have been at times, fiercely critical of the club, board, manager and players.

How many out of 10 would you give the fans, collectively, today ?

I'll start.

3. And a generous 3 at that.

I'll go back to the OP. So many of our fans demonstrate a genuine lack of understanding of BASIC footballing tactics.

Not saying by any means today was wonderful to watch and / or an utterly dominant performance btw.

But we were more than good enough for the 3 points today.

So it's the fans fault?!?!?!?! In case you forgot we got 18,000 again - most magnificentist support on earth.

Yeah, but like DronnieBlade says, a lot of them were are clueless as far as football is concerned. The early booing? The exhortations to 'Shoooot!!!' when Reed was 30 yards from goal (which would have been followed by boos if/when it had missed.)

Not just us, though. What do you expect from a nation whose favourite newspaper is The Sun and millions watch fucking tripe like 'Strictly' and 'X Factor'?

I was very disappointed with my fellow fans today. Rather than join the keyboard warriors with shoe throwing and walking out at random minutes into the match they instead got behind the team. It managed to diffuse the non existent toxic atmosphere that was predicted, perhaps because of the "fans" who decided they have had enough and didn't turn up today.

Long may it continue.

I'm amazed how many seem to struggle with the fact we played 3 cb and 3 cm.

In addition, special praise to the idiot at the back of the kop who spent the first half calling Hammond a see you next Tuesday, and telling him to f off over and over again.

Didn't hear him congratulate the assist though

They were magnificent for the five minutes after we scored. May as well have had 18,000 traffic cones for the rest of the game. There's a clue in the word supporter.
