He's poor in the air, but I thought today was one of his best performances of the season.

Funny how people see things differently. Poor in the air, weak physically and gives the ball away. Agree he tried to bring the ball forward and make something happen. Not for me I'm afraid.

I'd be surprised if there's many at all seeing it that way.

First half especially he anticipated the west ham attacks, stepped in and broke up play and immediately gets us forward again. Got into midfield areas and `broke the lines with good passes. Won so many headers. And just generally looked like he wanted to be there which I can't really say about any of the others.

Yeah the defeat wasn't down to him and I was speaking more generally about him over the season. I'd ask the question would you miss him if he didn't play? He's not a stand out defender like JOC or Egan.

We'd have lost by more than 3-0 last night if he didn't play I know that much.

And how standout has Egan actually been this season?

I'm not sure that's right. I can't think of many errors he's made at all.

Almost all our mistakes hehe come down the left side. He's usually having to try and cover a balls up from there.

Who's darling is he and why is he immune from criticism? Fair enough to disagree on Ampadu but I think you're barking up the wrong tree turning on Egan, he's reliable and actually defends, an art sadly being lost in the clamour for 'ball playing defenders'.
 
I think guancheblade is exaggerating for effect - but I agree with him in as much as some players seem to get more of a free pass on the criticism than others. Yes, McGoldrick’s a lovely footballer but his finishing is not much better than Burke’s and he misses almost all of the precious chances we do create. Yes, Egan is a solid centre half, but he‘s slow and gets undone way too often by a long ball straight down the middle. Meanwhile, everyone piles in on Ramsdale, Lundstram and whoever else is the current scapegoat - not that they don’t deserve plenty of stick, mind.

All just internet opinion, but it does seem some get an easier ride than others.

I just think there's an element of overrating Egan and I can't put my finger on why. Standout maybe but only in the way he hasn't been as consistently doggers as the rest of them, but not because he's been putting in excellent performances game after game.

His aerial strength is on the wane and his use of the ball is going backwards too (literally). But I suppose he's being asked to do more this season with the poor team performances.

Exactly this. McGoldrick a great example too. Has a clever lack of running around the pitch a lot (which pleases the Bladey Blades) and looking silky on the ball, but rarely gets us anywhere with it. Norwood for a long time was also escaping criticism despite showing all the signs his decline was imminent. It took a catalogue of catastrophic gaffs before the tide turned on him. Whereas the scapegoats aren't afforded a fraction of that good will.

Southampton away springs to mind.

Getting sent off a lot too ever since his first season doesn't seem to bother anyone either.

So 1 then... And that's one worst performance of the season as a team not just him.

As for his sendings off, one in championship on line against Millwall, I understand why he did it.

The one last season against Newcastle was bullshit and not a red.

Can't remember the one this season.

Still doesn't change the fact he is one of our most consistent players

Still think there's bigger reasons for our decline than him. Let's not forget he's had a season trying to cover up the bollocks of Robinson, Jags, Ampadu and Steven's as a partnership after losing his long time partner at the back

Never said he was a big reason for our decline. I just don't think he has been 7 out of 10 every game like others make out.

If any number of our players had made the error he did at Southampton fans would be all over that player for the mistake. But it was Egan and instantly forgotten about.

Ampadu lost Diop for the goal but it was the only mistake he made all game and many are making out he had a terrible game overall when he didn't. But it's fascinating how some players get free passes from the fans for these things.

i think osborn is the best lwb weve got and although hes not good enough for midfield in the prem i think he would be in the championship so we have to keep him for both those positions
 
I don't think anyone who has played in that back 6 can take too many plaudits considering we've only kept one clean sheet all season. Plenty of games we've only conceded one but that's all its taken considering how little we create up the other end.

The sending off against Villa in 12th minute. Extremely harsh that one if you ask me.

I love Didzy but you can guarantee there’d be an influx of ‘Klopp’s had our pants down’ and ‘when’s the next available train back to Liverpool for ‘pooster’ threads if that was Brewster missing those chances on Monday.
