One last big effort from the fans I think.
Lose this without making any effort to win it and the damage to the fans morale and interest will disappear in 90 minutes. It's almost as though there's a feeling that "You cant blame us" going around.
It's game over if we lose in a pitiful manner without contributing to the game IMO.
And judging by Cloughs comments were certainly not going to be going for the win.
Not going for the win will mean the same as it nearly always does............A borefest that will end up with our resolve being broken eventually from the only shot on target

Yes agree , one last effort by the fans . Lets hope the players keep there supporters quite . No in between for us in this one , a wins a win , if we lose , we lose , but a loss with a whimper , the players will deserve what they get . They owe us one saturday IMO.

remember that day well - we were in toytowns main stand - standing at the front.

Bob Atkins took it with back to goal, turned on a six pence and smashed it in, in front of the Blades fans.

Twas then we realised we weren't the only ones in that stand.

Great goal, great day - fantastic to be a Blade.

I was in that stand with my brother (a Rotherham fan). He was asking me to be quiet but there were a few Blades in that stand and no one was stopping me celebrating that strike. It was also great looking across and seeing fellow Blades in the away end. If the spirit of Bob strikes Saturday it will be really special.

Have found I can potentially go now. I have offer of one ticket. if anyone has another please PM me.

Jeez is it really 31 years ago ................. I took me old dad to that one as a surprise for him, I just rolled up at his house and said get thy coat on we going to Millmoor to see the Blades. Making me feel old now :(

I walked to Millmoor from Page Hall that day. Game looked like it was heading for a draw until Atkins popped up and did the biz, cue mayhem

Shocking how 30 plus years has gone in a flash! The Saturday after was Southend away when fanny Arnott scored the winner 5 mins from the end, he seemed to go on a run from the halfway line before cooly slotting home. Always remember 2 minutes later they seemed certain to equalise until Cockerill came from nowhere to block the shot on the goal line.
Remember the Rotherham game well. Was a special Blades day.

Glenn Cockerill was a special Blade too.

One of my all time favourites

My favourite United goal of all time ,and favourite away match because of the weekend we had. Including an impromptu game in Hyde Park on Sunday morning which included Chelsea ,Newcastle and Utd fans amongst others. I liked Arnott ,as I did Hutchinson and Macdonald in the same role. I think Baxter could be the same type of player but he lets himself down unfortunately.

I was in the terrace in front of the main stand with my dad. If I remember right there were Blades fans on all sides of the ground, I'd estimate close to 10k Blades at Millmoor that day. As well as pandemonium in the stands Atkins' goal was the queue for a mini pitch invasion, then again soon after at the final whistle. Probably wouldn't have been the same if Ray McHale's wonder striker wouldn't have been disallowed. Happy days, a repeat at Ockwell will do Saturday.

Out of the 14.000 at Millmoor 10,000 must have been Blades that day. What I remember is how the pitch was rock hard Rotherham did everything they could to try and even it out as a contest and to stop teams playing football at Millmoor, they were in real danger of relegation at the time. The pitch certainly had not seen water for weeks and was in a terrible state. I thought it was Arnott who had a goal disallowed ? and it looked like a 0-0 until Bob Atkins scored the goal of his career, I think we knew we were going up when that went in.

I'm quite pissed off about the "no alcohol" thing. I only drink when I go to football and only usually down a couple. Like most football fans, I don't start fights, or smash up trains, or racially abuse fellow travelers. Besides which, how can they decide it is just away fans who can't drink? It's stupid because anyone who does like a few beers so they can fight the world is just going to load up pre-game anyway, and if anything, it increases the chances fans will mingle before and after the game!

Anyone got a plan (for a pre-match pint)? Chapeltown is out for me due to distance (I'm in S/E Sheffield, besides, I'm not that convinced everyone will get on the one train that gets to Barnsley in time!). I'm with kids, so needs to be child friendly/safe, and preferably sell some sort of local ale!

Meh, it wouldn't surprise me if they herd everyone straight into the ground early, or shove everyone somewhere where alcohol isn't being sold!

kin ell, can't believe it's that long ago

Back then, a group of Blades used to walk to Rotherham when we played the Millers (from the city centre, via Wicker). They had a half in every pub on the way (about 14-16).

Don't think so they wouldn't have made it to Tinsley, every street corner on the cliffe had a boozer on it.

We used to get the 52 from Handsworth top, get off at the bottom of Staniforth Road, start in either the Carlton or D&P and drink our way down from there for Rotherham games, and maybe get taxis if we ran out of time - or boozers. And there's no f***ing way we'd drink in halves either!

"Bob Atkins Day" was a memorable sunny day for that crawl which intensified the "flavour" of the beer. Don't recall missing any out till the Commercial but we must have otherwise we'd have no memory of Bob's wonder goal. Pubs were so close together in those days I guess we'd look at the depth of queue at a bar and go next door if we were going to wait more than 2 minutes for more gravy.

Ah, the (beer-clouded) memories.

We were on the Tivoli end that day - we weren't alone. At least half the crowd around us on the left hand side of it were Blades. No bother, no sign of trouble at all around us. We spotted Mick the relief manager of the Handsworth Old Crown - Rotherham fan - in front of us, just as we scored. We felt sorry for him as we went mental, he just looked like he wanted to cry. He promised not to piss in our beers later that evening! Not that you could tell after Walt retired from the Old Crown.

Disorder will not be tolerated in local derby

Police are warning fans intent on causing disorder at this weekend's Barnsley v Sheffield United match at Oakwell Ground that disruptive or antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated.

The teams take to the pitch at 12.15pm and fans should expect to see a significant police presence in Barnsley town centre in a bid to deliver an enjoyable and safe environment for all.

Any antisocial behaviour, drunk and disorderly conduct or violent disorder will be policed swiftly and robustly, says Match Commander Chief Superintendent David Hartley.

More than 18,000 supporters are expected to attend the game on Saturday, with over 5,000 United fans predicted to begin arriving in Barnsley from early that morning.

They are advised that the Metrodome complex in Queen's Road will be the only facility providing alcoholic refreshments for the away fans.

Barriers will also be in place around the ground on the day to ensure the safety of everyone attending the match.

Chief Superintendent David Hartley, who is overseeing the policing of the match, said: "We are well aware that tensions are running high between the two groups of fans and that this is a hotly anticipated local derby.

"We therefore want to ensure that the game is an enjoyable experience for all who attend. We will not let the minority among the fans, who might have thoughts about spoiling the event, ruin what promises to be an exciting match for everyone else.

"Our aim is to provide a high visibility police presence in and around the ground to ensure the wider community are able to go about their daily business with as little disruption as possible.

"I would advise all fans travelling to the game to plan their route beforehand and leave plenty of time for travel as there will inevitably be an increase in traffic in the area."

Police have been liaising with both clubs, United and Barnsley, to ensure this is a safe and enjoyable fixture.

Chief Supt Hartley added: "Disorder of any kind will not be tolerated at this weekend's fixture. If you are caught engaging in antisocial behaviour or other criminality, you will be dealt with robustly and are likely to face arrest."

Police will be communicating with fans and the public via social media both before and during the match, advising on turnstile opening times, transport options, refreshments and any issues that may occur. For updates, please follow @BarnsleyFC_SYP and @SUFC_police on Twitter.

In addition, Blades fans are asked to note the following information, put together for away fans attending Saturday's Sky Bet League One fixture at Oakwell.

For away fans who travel to Oakwell by car using Sat Nav, please use the postcode S71 1AN, which will take you to the away fans' car park.

• Any away fans who park in the Grove Street car park will be delayed at the end of the game due to restrictions of movement of fans.
• There will be pro-active searching at turnstiles for pyrotechnics and smoke canisters.
• There will be no alcohol on sale whatsoever inside the ground for away fans.

Blades fans are reminded that the game has been brought forward to kick-off at 12.15pm, on police advice.

This is plastered all over; our site, their site, on the SYP website and they keep tweeting it. Any reason for this? All seems a bit dramatic. Is there a camera crew following them or something?

I checked the dingle website yesterday, and there was nothing on there. I suspect it is symptomatic of SYP not being able to run a bath.

It's probably something to do with this paragraph:

"More than 18,000 supporters are expected to attend the game on Saturday, with over 5,000 United fans predicted to begin arriving in Barnsley from early that morning"

Must be a massive crowd for them, the biggest event in years!!!...bless their cotton socks. I mean MORE THAN 18,000 expected WOW how is Barnsley going to cope with that, lock your doors, keep the women and children locked away, MORE THAN 18000 fans and 5000 form Sheffield converging on Oakwell, its going to be bedlam, the end of the world, how is anyone going to survive.

In reality, the police probably got a tip off that a little bit of bother was being planned, so they're going over board to prevent it.

Meanwhile, the Dingles are jizzing their pants over their biggest crowd in years, even though almost a 3rd of it is made up by our fans.

If only we would beat them.....however, even I know whats coming, and I try to be on the positive end of the support.

Please United, for once, please win a game when we all know we're not going to!

I'm quietly confident. Our worse results seem to be when teams suck it up and look to hit us on the break, I think they'll go full pelt and we could give them a surprise! The betting seems to reflect that with us clear favorites, despite them having the better form. Lets just hope we turn up and give them a game.
