Because the Small Bell End didn't sound right.

The “back to square one” story is one everyone thinks they know... and it’s total bollocks.

It originated from Victorian board games, sort of forerunners of snakes and ladders, where the largest penalty was to “go back to square one” the phrase existed for decades before Radio was even invented.

It doesn’t even make sense to apply it to that football diagram. If you we’re kicking from left to right then it would be back to square 7 or 8

Even kicking the other way back to square 2 would make as much sense as 1 on the diagram.
