i think we need to massively improve our service before we think about players like watkins. We dont create anywhere near enough opportunities. Even with our current forwards we could score a lot more with more creative/technical players in our squad.
is his goal tally this season any different to mcburnies when we signed him?

We very Rarely play through balls For a pacey striker and very rarely put decent crosses in the box for a big man so I’m struggling to see what striker would improve us right now. Not to say we don’t need a striker or two but we also need to adjust our style of play slightly.

Watkins would be a gamble for sure. Could definitely make the step up but could easily struggle......not seen much to suggest he would be any better than Callum Robinson who looked the same at Champ level. Could well be £15-£20m down the shitter.

The most that Robinson has ever scored in a Championship season is 12, Watkins has 25 just this season. He scored more this season than Robinson did in his last two Championship seasons. They don’t look the same at all

And that’s just on the stats. They are completely different types of forward, with different strengths.

Before that he was averaging 10 goals a season in the Championship. Is he the player we need or was this a one season wonder? He certainly has more potential than Robinson based on this season where he has played as a central striker. Can't help feeling that he would be an expensive gamble, but I'm struggling along with Jan Age, to see an affordable striker who would improve us, based on our style of play.

Where did I say they were the same type of player? I was drawing a comparison.

What I meant was that Robinson looked very good at Champ level playing in his position/role.....Watkins looks good playing in his position/role but there's nothing that i have seen to suggest he could make the step up any more than Robinson.

Spot on. We create very little through the middle - balls for strikers to run on to. Looking at McBurnie's goals for Swansea many came from passes to his feet. From out wide or through the middle.

Against Southampton we did actually attempt a few threaded passes from both Fleck and Berge. It nearly came off a couple of times. I think it's something we need to work on.

I mean you could make that comparison about every single player we’re looking at. That John Swift looks good playing good in his position/role, but he might not make the step up because Callum Robinson.

What you can do is look at a player’s attributes and try and apply them to the role they might play for us. Robinson was a bit of a gamble because we were expecting him not just to move centrally, but also develop parts of his game as learning that role. Watkins has strength, positional sense, intelligence, and a more natural finishing instinct in my opinion – I don’t feel Robinson really has any of these yet.

Watkins has looked really good in previous matches but little service last night to be fair to him. Works hard, pace, strong and skillful. Definitely a premier league player in there but maybe still a work in progress and we probably need a striker that can have an impact immediately.

Benhrama looks the opposite to me, lazy and doesn't do the hard graft, got the skill but the way we play not sure he's a fit.

You could have said pretty much the exact same about any of our players during the season we got promoted, they looked like very good Championship players but what evidence was there that they’d make the step up?

True, there wasn't any....

Benhrama is a Villa signing in the making. Nailed on they will spunk loads of cash at him for little reward.

Yes, and it will help if we've got a quick and direct striker who (unlike Mousset) is consistently fit and available. You never quite know with strikers, but Watkins seems to be improving, his age is great and his attributes seem to be what we're looking for. He should definitely be on our list of candidates.

Watkins scored 25 Goals for Brentford and I’m pretty sure he didn’t take any penalties for them either .
He plays the perfect role for us the majority of goals hes scored for Brentford are low crosses into the box like our wingbacks do.
He’d be perfect for us , no signing ever made in the history of football has been certain to score X ammount goals every signing is a gamble.
If we don’t get him go for that grant at Huddersfield

100% agree with this. We desperately need a player who is capable of creating something out of nothing that might turn a 0-0 into a 1-0 win or rescue a point for us.

Yes we did in the early part of the season when Moose was flying. After that we didn’t have a pacey striker to pass it too

Watkins is not the answer. The striker lack of goals issue stems from the tactic of overloads, 4v3 on the wing means if the cross comes in, there's only 1 striker or the non strikers attacking the ball - all of which are outnumbered, Striker recruitment needs to be for hard running proven finishers who instinctively find space - Shakiri at the scousers comes to mind. That or the late arriving midfielder who is calm enough to spot the space - a more clinical Lunny.

BBC just confirmed he has a £18m release clause that was activated by yesterday’s defeat-not a bad price for a goal scorer

If, and it's a big if, Brentford don't go up, we should go all out to get Watkins, 15-20m plus Robinson, he looks class, great eye for goal, brilliant link up play, a right handful
No! Not proven at this level besides he hasn't really impressed me

I’m not getting too excited because I think we’ll get out bid. He’ll be in demand. Probably wages Will scupper us

At a guess, Leeds, Villa and a couple of London clubs will be interested. Perhaps Palace

At that price I would think there’ll be plenty outside the top six looking seriously

If we could get this lad for £18m in this day and age, then we would be daft not to try.

He is already a very good championship player who is young and who has plenty of potential. Can run the channels and can be a box type CF. Exactly the type of player who CW would like to bring in.

I think though others will be sniffing so if we are going in for him, then we have to move quick. On the down side, his agent will be touting him about like a Pimp touts his 'goods' in Las Vegas.

Worth a punt imo, and you don't win the raffle if you don't buy a ticket.

Our previous interest (when he was at Exeter and subsequently last summer at Brentford) might play in our favour if we are going for him. Wages aside, we’re a very attractive proposition.

Noooooooooooo 58, got to start thinking “we’ve got to pay if we want to stay”. We are a PL club in every sense, can’t afford to let the ‘littl ol’ Sheffield United’ mentality linger.
