Ollie Watkins

Literally pays for half of their new stadium. Absolutely crazy money. Hoping and praying Villa go down...the money they throw around takes the piss. It'll be local businesses and creditors that suffer when it inevitably goes tits up and they're £200m in debt...

Let's just sign him for a few pennies when Villa get relegated. His agent must be putting in a sensible release clause if signing for that lot.

I really cant get over this fee.

There are always those transfers that you think 'how much?' but can often some find some logic (especially when it comes to some of the 'super' European transfer and you get all the commercial befits, shirt sales, image rights etc etc). But this one I just thing sums up just how awful the transfer market has become and how utterly reckless owners/managers are content to be.

No one on planet earth could give me a list of reasons why Ollie Watkins is worth £33m - its a magical figure that Villa are paying out of mismanagement and desperation.

That price is insane/ridiculous/absurd/pathetic.

1 - Brentford asking for the price - daft
2 - Villa paying that price - dafter x 10

Watkins, this window, and off the top of my head, valued more than;
  • Callum Wilson
  • Allan
  • Doucoure
  • Doherty
  • Ferran Torres
Ridiculous.
You could have actually got a combination of 2 players off that list for the same price as Watkins 🤣 🤣 🤣

"Clear statement of intent" from Villa. Intent for what? Paying massively over the odds for a decent-but-unproven centre forward?

Brentford have replaced Watkins with Toney and pocketed £22m in the process (less c20% sell-on to Exeter - about £5m). There's no two ways about it, that's outstanding business.

EDIT: if - and it's a big if - we manage to sign Brewster for less than Villa pay for Watkins... 😂 😂 😂 😂

Think I badly potrayed my point.

I think its daft that Brentford could ask for that kind of money and get it. There's no negativity aimed at Brentford.

It'd be like us asking £20m for Osborne. We'd be daft. Because there should be no chance of getting it - although seemingly if its Villa that want him...!
The difference is, quite a few clubs want to sign Watkins. There’s still a couple of weeks to go in the window, no need to shit the bed yet. So you put him on offer at a high price and see if anyone is a stupid enough ex-pig Brummy idiot to make a bid.
If 3 or 4 clubs wanted Osborn, I’d expect us to hold out for decent money. It’s all about demand (and price elasticity).

No one is looking at that transfer and thinking 'Wow, Ollie Watkins turns them into European/top 10 candidates' - he's not at that level.

If we would have spent 18m I would have felt the lower end of comfortable. As with McBurnie. But £33m. Give over.

This also screws any other business villa want to do this window being willing to pay an extra third on top of the going rate seems to be a theme for them clubs charging a desperation tax

Gregg clearly didn't re-read his article.

Starts by saying that Watkins was Villa's top target. Two paragraphs down, it says that they turned their attention to him after Wilson went to Newcastle.

You're probably right but it could be that Watkins was Villa's top target when they thought there was an £18m release clause (right, Banana ?). They then focussed on Wilson - and apparently outbid Newcastle - when they were quoted £25m for Watkins but when they were turned down by Wilson, focus moved back to Watkins. Quite how they managed to spend £3-8m more than they were initially told it would cost is anyone's guess.

It's hilarious, particularly as they're facing another relegation battle.

Better spend then and back Wilder over Dean the wanker Smith cos if we go down we won't be.

How are you feeling now, Bruce?

United: £20m (possibly rising to £30m) spent on Ramsdale, Foderingham, Bogle, Lowe and Ampadu (loan)

Villa: £42m (rising to £49m) spent on Watkins and Cash.

28 million ? That is something else for someone unproven at premier league level !

Seems like he has all the attributes to succeed at this level and only time will tell however it is quite a gamble . 18 mill would have been about right .

Banana , you have seen him week to week . Do you think he will succeed at premier level ?

Wow..for decades the market was “pay high prices for tried and tested PL players” or

Gamble by going down Into the Championship and picking up a potential bargain.
Championship players were always cheap because of the risk.....many CC players struggle to make the step up.

Think a fair price for a Championship is 15 million......the top players closer to 20 million....but even thar is a risk.
Well done Brentford....if they collect 33 million they‘ve done some excellent business...still think it can‘t be accurate.

Even if this lad succeeds at premier league level what does he have to do to increase in value from 33 mill villa could very quickly have a depreciating asset on their hands here

Watch Watkins highlights from last season. Majority of his goals are 6 yard sniffs, open goals, rebounds and a few headers. He won't get anywhere near those kind of chances in the premier league. Looks to be another than doesn't create anything himself, but relies on chances put on a plate for him.

I really hope they go down. I don't know why, but I've never liked them and in recent years, their approach of spending like its going out of fashion, doesn't sit right with me.

Just been reading Villa agreed fee of 28m rising to 33m with add ons that is total lunacy

Ridiculous.

And ex World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez.

No one forced Villa/Smith to spend that amount. Well done Brentford for getting that much.

I can't imagine that Wilder would act in such a cavalier fashion even if he had that type of budget to spend. Which shouldn't disguise the fact that Chris would love to spend big on the right sort of player, but only if it was right, not simply because he had the money to spend. Smith has shown that he's incapable of managing constructively, his purchases have been unspectacular, and they just about escaped relegation by their finger tips. And all this on over £100mil flushed down the footballing toilet!
