I haven't trawled through either, but as a young un it was always the Whetsone, later to become the Moorfooot and now some sort of restaurant I think.

When I used to drive with my young lad in later years it was the Royal Oak (now the Beer Engine) as I used to park out that side of the ground to get to Eccy Road and away.

Whetstone was our meeting place for years in town.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the Compleat Angler near West Bar yet. We would drink there before going to Romeo and Juliets. Friday nights would start for a couple of us at the Royal Standard then move onto the Surrey which was the meet up pub for everyone else. Brown Bear, Crucible bar, Dove and Rainbow, Hen and Chicken, Three Tuns, Wig and Pen, Golden Ball, Stonehouse, Compleat Angler, Romeos. Was never a massive fan of West Street. The Stonehouse was a favourite with the big courtyard at the back. Yorkshire grey too and Arundel. Remember going in the Cannon one time and my mate bricking himself beforehand and saying just buy halves in case it kicks off. I spilled some beer and he was going apeshit but I couldn't stop laughing. It wasn't that bad but we left to calm him down. Romeos could be nasty. Limit was great around 87. Was only in a few times. Usually went to the Leadmill. But I took a uni mate o the Limit one Monday wrong night obviously in 1989 and it was empty with a couple of scallywags approaching me a couple of times asking if I had any e as they wanted to buy it. The rave culture and ecstasy changed the music scene. Wasn't my cup of tea. Remember liking Henry's. Isabella's not so much. Sinatra's not so much and for some reason never got into Josephine's. We tried a few times but were refused entry. Maybe we were a bit young and not appropriately dressed. Had to the settle for Barry Noble's Roxy.
All the lads used to have one on London Rd then down to Silks next to Romeos after home matches. Pigs were always supposedly turning up but they did only once ,never again.

If we didn't meet on London Rd ,we would meet in the Pump round the corner.

I remember they turned up one Friday or Saturday night in the Royal Standard before heading up to London Road in the mid-1980's for a prearranged fight. One or two petrol bombs got lobbed and the Pigs got ran. I'm not sure if that was the first or second time they turned up on London Road. But that was the end of it. Plus the petrol bomb incident meant a lot of Blades who weren't even on London Road that night got there collars felt over the weekend. I remember walking through their mob in the Royal Standard before they headed up. They were all muscle bound, pumped up but I didn't rate their chances. I think they had started to call themselves OCS back then. Also remembered Blades in Maximilions one night when it kicked off and the bouncers shit themselves.

The Pheasant was much better before it became Barrie's.

Agree about the Yorkshire Grey and Devonshire, 2 cracking pubs that are sadly missed.

For the life of me though I can't place exactly where The Pump was anymore.
round the back of the Moor down one of the side roads half way down ;)

Of all the bands at the Top Rank I think The Ramones were best ,Sham 69 was mad and The Clash (my favourite band ever) were disappointing. The twotone night was good (Selector/Madness/Specials) until the old bill turned the electric off.
heh i was at that Sham gig. i had to sit upstairs cos i had a broken arm in plaster. there was fighting all the way through the gig between skins and punks .. Pursey got fed up with it and got a punk and a skin onstage to sing 'kids united'.. which all went rather well.. until they played the next number and they all started fighting again :D i remember the Damned being pretty good and the Banshees being utterly shite (fell asleep at the back)

West Street, including the Limit, was a pig stronghold throughout the mid to late 80's . I remember a crawl me and a couple of mates used to do on Saturdays after the match which consisted of Berlin's, The Dove and Rainbow, Wig and Pen, Golden Ball and then onto West Street . It could get very lively on there late on !

Anyone remember Barrow Boys ?
the Limit wasn't .. big Andy the bouncer was a massive Blade as some poor fuckers found out when they cracked a joke about Walsall

So were the macleans, never been a Wendy stronghold , most people were there for the music and a night out anyway

The mid 80's nearly always saw more of them in there than us . It very rarely kicked off in there though as the whole rivalry thing hadn't really kicked in then like it did a couple of years later with the older ' townies ' of both sides generally getting on with each other ( this was around 83-86ish ) Add to that a universal respect for the bouncers in there aswell meant if it did kick off it was usually outside later .

As for the Limit Bouncers Blade credentials I can vouch for that too as I got the shock of my life when I bumped into 5 of them away at Oldham . I was only really on nodding terms with them up untill that day buy I had a good chat with some of them at Oldham and they were spot on .

The thing that changed about the Limit in terms of clientele using the place as the decade progressed wasnt one side getting the upper hand over the other it was the introduction of acid . Occasions et al then started to be the battle ground .

As for West Street as a whole of course loads of Blades supporters used to drink up there every weekend . London Road witnessed the same with loads of pig fans drinking up there too . Where things got messy though was if you were someone who was generally known as one of ' the lads ' from either side . West Street could be dicey for Blades lads drinking up there as there was a very good chance you'd bump into their ' lads ' at some point and if they had the numbers it was very much game on ( there were numerous times in the 80s were the odd 2 or 3 Blades drinking up there were clipped by the pig's who massively outnumbered them ) .

As i say though, the tide definitely turned as the 80's turned into the 90's but the very fact that Blades ' lads ' went up there at all pig hunting should tell you all you need to know . They went up there because it was nailed on that the pig's would be up there, in numbers, as they always were .

Barrow Boys was a bit too convenient for the bus station. Went in one hour before I was due to catch a bus/coach to Manchester early one afternoon and drank 4 pints, thinking nothing of it. By Stocksbridge I was feeling uncomfortable in the bladder area, realising I’d made a mistake, the bus was direct to Manchester with no stops. Top of the Pennines at halfway point I realised I’d have to go, so walked the full length of the bus to ask the driver if we could stop, he refused, I sat back down but soon realised I couldn’t wait. Walked back up and told the driver he’d have to stop. Fortunately he complied. I went round back’of bus and had a long piss with cars passing by continually and all the passengers on the bus glaring at me. I couldn’t have cared less. When you gotta go you gotta go.
Lesson learnt though

Thought yoy would say that the drive fucked off or did yoy take his keyu

Top thread this.

Sheldon was my pre match haunt and occasionally Matilda... especially on derby day.

When pubs still shut at 3pm had a few seasons where I’d finish in Queens in pond street, sup with “gin and orange” (anyone know him ?) and then we’d get taxi up to Lane about 3.20! Finished Saturday night after doing full sess, only interrupted by match, in Penny Black which was always a bit shit.

Mulberry tavern and Claymore we’re always a bit interesting clientele wise.

Loved Pump around Xmas time as all Freeman’s catalog birds used to do dinner time session midweek and were always in a “friendly” mood !

There was always a great atmosphere around town and in the pubs on Xmas Eve. Pigs used to congregate in the Hole in the Road singing Hark Now Hear... That was before I was pub age early 80s before things changed. Remember going in the Pig and Whistle in the daytime on Xmas Eve and it was full of birds and tinsel. Do they know it's Xmas was playing.

Yea you’re right Sean poured out of the bottle
Long time ago bro

They didn't have Newcastle Brown on tap but in the early years they did have Newcastle Exhibition one of my favourite brews from the North East having spent some time working there. Spent many an hour in there just for the Exhibition. Problem was when the Geordies came to town you couldn't get in.

Lived on Fentonville Street in the early 80s and the Cross Guns was my local. Decided it probably wasn't for me after one particularly unpleasant Saturday night ruck when the victor was congratulated with a tribute I've never forgotten. "Tha danced on 'is 'eard kid. Tha danced on 'is 'eard"

You should have seen some of the post scoring dance routines seen regularly in parks across Sheffield...

Make a good Cross Guns T shirt with that phrase on the front!!
