It was the Sportsman ,and Id say the Limit was mainly Blades ,we had most of West st ,but one or two of Wendys main lads used to hide behind the bouncers on a regular basis.

West Street, including the Limit, was a pig stronghold throughout the mid to late 80's . I remember a crawl me and a couple of mates used to do on Saturdays after the match which consisted of Berlin's, The Dove and Rainbow, Wig and Pen, Golden Ball and then onto West Street . It could get very lively on there late on !

Anyone remember Barrow Boys ?

About 10 years ago! It’s now “West one”, a housing complex with retail / bars underneath.

Beehive still exists, over the road.
I loved the Hornblower. It had proper beer, when getting hold of that in town was like finding rocking horse shit, and as I've always liked pirates (including a soft spot for Brizzle Roverrs!), an ideal venue! Kyarrr!

Salutation Inn, Attercliffe Common; Jack in the Box, Hackenthorpe. Not very nice pubs, but 100% Blades.

The Manor. My Uncle Cyril (a Wednesdayite!) was the landlord in the early 70s. Apart from him, 100% Blades. Roughest pub I've ever drunk in.

The timbertop shirecliffe bang next to utds academy, some of the suicide squad,s local in the 80,s

This is still a good pre/post match venue.

With good /cheap ale..

I like the road sign that says “To Sheffield” . It was probably useful because if you didn’t go left there, you’d end up in the Sheaf....

I certainly do CHL under the arches with the barrel tables used to meet there a few times before away games

Reading these with a tier in my eye great memories. The Mill in Mosbourgh was where we would meet befour Home and away games. we even had a couple of pigs change colours because we had such a good bunch of lads

The Mill used to lively when they had a DJ on back in the day , after it shut they ran it up at Eckington Hall

Not sure if it's been mentioned but The Vine is currently (and exceedingly slowly) being turned into flats. They've been building for at least two years.

Meanwhile a massive new student flat complex is being constructed right next door, which would probably have been enough to support the Vine on its own.

I went to school near there so it was THE place to go on leaving school.

It was called “The Mill” when it first opened. Restaurant upstairs, bar and disco downstairs.

A great place to seek out local totty whose ambition in life was to get pregnant.

A great place to to fight with local Derbyshire village boys, whose ambition in life was to get the local totty pregnant.

I used to go quite a bit when I was in my teens.

It got a reputation for being really rough later on.
Spent 7 nights a week in the mill from 77 to 80 loads of us Beighton lads on the x30 totty punch ups and beer. the landlord at the time jeff moved to the Norfolk arms at ringinlow then committed suicide .

Barrow boys and all so the garden pub in the market ,that became a after the match meeting place till the police car had it hand break pulled of one night .

My Uncle Mick turned the Turf around ,as well the Nottingham House at Broomhill and the Mailcoach on West St ,he also had the Railway at Brightside and The Junction at Woodhouse.
I lived opposite The Turf Sitwell, I know your Uncle Mick well. He had a wicked sense of humour very dry. It was a great pub when he had it had some good times in there.

Yorkshire Grey
sheffield_s1_yorkshiregrey.jpg

The Whetstone when it first opened then changed to Moorfoot tavern now a restaurant or something.
Not forgetting the Sportsman on Denby St.
Another pre match haunt was the beer and lager only Turo Tavern opposite the Standard.
Earl of Arundel

The Yorkshire Grey was a quality pub.

Sportsman: Midday arrival on a match day. Double up on pints just before it got busy. Only knew people in there by their faces not names, but always friendly. So much so I went to many an away game on their coach on my jack jones. (Gillingham when D'jaffo got his hatrick, sticking out in my mind)

Of all the bands at the Top Rank I think The Ramones were best ,Sham 69 was mad

Mad not in the Manchester 90s scene sense, but in the full scale riot sense. It was the 2nd date in the tour and IIRC the rest of the tour was abandoned.

About 750 in there with 500 skins, 200 punks and 50 kids in Harringtons and jeans (like me and my mate Andy).
The bouncers protected the bar, the roadies protected the stage/band and the rest of it was a free for all. Fights breaking all night between small gangs of punks and larger gangs of skinheads.

At the end of the night several hundred skins went up Fargate putting windows through and looking for 'rockers and 'mods' (anyone who wasn't a skinhead would do).

I've shit myself a few times on United away days, but never like that night.

I remember Pursey stopping halfway through Borstal Breakout I think and asking everyone to look on the floor for a ring or something ,soon as it was found they launched straight back into it and beer and gob went everywhere. Mad mad night .

Fuck me, I'd forgotten the Garden . I think the Police Car incident was a " last match of the season piss up " . I used to love them ! It didnt matter where we'd played, who we'd played or where we'd finished in the table, everyone one was out .

You’ve fallen into the same trap as many in overestimating the demand for alcohol from the current student intake.

Alcohol sales amongst home students has fallen, mostly because booze and drugs don’t mix and they think they get more bang for their cash with the latter. And the bulk of international students tend to come from countries where for cultural or religious reasons, there’s no big drinking culture. Think Malaysia, Iraq, Iran, Saudi. Hence the dessert bars popping up. Even the Chinese would rather spend their cash in casinos.

Yep, totally agree. Student dont drink, simple as. And when they go out they go straight to West St at 10pm or straight to a club. They also rarely go football too, which is a shame as it was always a good way of filling some seats up

In its prime the good old Vine was more than a drinking hole. It had DJ nights, bands, pool tournaments, quizzes etc. In fact, some people used to go there and have a good time without drinking any alcohol. (OK they may have been of their faces on drugs)

Took our lass in that night , gave her a insight into blades culture .happy days

Beighton, Mosbourgh.Eckington all in the same pub. It was good fun

just spotted this, lived just a few doors down to the right, along abbeydale rd, top of Witney, for 17yrs. The Royal was always my 1st pint on match days. And my local for the rest of the week. Played darts for them, and football, that then turned into The red earl. The team that is, not the Royal.

Not Doms ?? The Royals most popular game ,used to scare the shit out of you when the old boys slammed the doubles down :D

When I was 17 I was doing a course at Sheffield Tech and met a guy who lived on the Manor . We got on like a house on fire right from the off , mainly because we both had the same passions - the Blades and Rock 'n Roll .

A few weeks after getting to know him , he invited me to his cousins 21st birthday party at the Manor . I got there at 7:30 and everyone was nice and friendly but around 8:15 two family members started having an argument. Within minutes the place was like a fucking Wild West saloon , with bottles and chairs flying everywhere as other family members joined in and took sides . It went on for about 20 mins. until the landlord managed to get everyone out and shut the place down.

My local pubs weren't exactly salubrious but I'd never seen anything like that - and still haven't till this day .

Used to be the Raven. Proper Grebo pub in the seventies.

But not in the 60's - usually full of students and ' interesting ' types , especially on Thursday nights when they had a live band , quite often Joe Cocker . Brilliant !

Yes, the Caribbean room. Skippy, Vardy, king. Big fight New Year’s Eve, David Night came in with a huge rolled up snowball, and through it on the Poole table. Fukin lot went up outside, the end door was generally always locked. King was kicking the shit out of Dave’s brother in-law, I jumped on his back to pull him off, he shook me of like rag doll. So I crawled to the main door on abbeydale rd side, which was now locked, begging Pete, the landlord to let me in. He barred me and told me to fuck off. The police arrived, that saved me getting more punishment, whereas David proceeded to rip a road sign post out of the ground, and throw it through the windscreen of the police car. Happy days. Got to have been late 70s early 80s.
