Just reading about Wards. 1989 me and a mate were playing golf at Beauchief, A bloke caught us up and we offered for him to come through or join us. He joined us and it turned out he was the landlord at the Royal Standard. Nice bloke and a great pint of Wards.

Lovely old boozer, with a full sized snooker table in the back.

Sadly it's now some blinged up Sheesha joint, with an appalling mural of Harlem on the north wall. Harlem ffs, just so relevant to Sheffield.

The passage of time has eroded whether it was bitter or Gold Label or even both.
I worked there in the summer of 69 before going to teacher training college in Leeds. The free beer was called Amber Bitter. Quite weak and in mediaeval times it would probably have been called small beer. Almost everybody drank it, even the drivers! On their rounds, the Drayton could have either a pint of beer or a packet of fags - again, even the drivers!
The workers there had a secret stash of Gold Label up on the roof where there were pallets of the wooden boxes they had in those days.
The stories I could tell!

Happy days 😉

Draymen not Drayton!!!

I think this photo I posted above is at Bramall Lane, judging by the sponsorship on the stand? A similar photo can be seen in the excellent book about Needham from the game against Celtic in 1898.

So I assume this was a photo from the same game. Looks like a Blade player injured.

Duncan Gilmour was a Sheffield brewer so the sponsor on the stand stacks up as well

I can make out Almond at the back, any guesses for the other United players in the photo?

May ask on a Celtic forum if they can identify any players. Which would be a nice confirmation.

UTB
