Stamford Bridge official Att. 85,000.
Surely those on the roof didn't go through the turnstiles but shinned up the fall pipes. Drain pipes to you none construction wallahs, despite drainpipes being the earthenware/plastic ones underground.
Whatever it's a pretty amazing sight and one no H&S worker should be confronted with, so as to retain their sanity.🤪

How many of them got a career out of the game.

Only Battersby and Anthony to my memory

Shiels and Hartle both reserve players. Hartle played a fair number of games, never made a position his own, very skilful but generally regarded as a bit lightweight. Shiels was signed from Irish football as a prospect, never quite made it. With Pace occupying his position, he never had much of a chance, and then Mick Jones appeared on the scene.

John Harris was trying to get the balance right on the two wings. Len Allchurch and John Docherty on the right before Alan Woodward was introduced and took over the number 7 shirt.

On the left wing it was Ron Simpson and Barry Hartle. It was the signing of Gil Reece that gave us a more permenant number 11.

Denis Shiels seemed to be a consistent member of the Central League team.

Only Battersby and Anthony ever played for the first team and then only managed about 10 appearances between them. Our youth policy was dire in the early to mid 90s.

As a Brentford fan, Rick Wakeman told me that for a while Sheffield United were his second team after we signed Docherty from them as he was keen to watch his progress. The red and white stripes and 1889 formation helped with this. He knows his football, does Rick.

Rick Wakeman gives a call out to Brentford FC on his profile on the inside sleeve of Yes’s Fragile album (and what a fantastic album it is !)

Denis Shiels 10 goals in 32 appearances is a surprise.

We'd have him playing up front today with that return.

As a massive Yes fan, I’m chuffed that you mentioned Rick having the Blades as his second team.

He was in the Directors' Box (old John Street one) when Brentford beat us 2-0 in 1979/1980. As a starry-eyed Yes fan myself, I spent the whole night looking up into the box from the EDS pen wondering if the guy in the electric blue suit with long blond hair was Mr Wakeman. Decades later I was able to ask him and he confirmed that it was indeed him: "We beat you two-nil and you were rubbish. You had one player who was miles better than the rest of the team, from South America..." That'll be Alex Sabella, then.

1963. Rest of the World v England. 100 years of the FA. England won 2-1.

I'll leave it to Bert to say who scored the winner

It was that bloke who, when he scored a lot of goals for Chelsea as a teenager got dropped by Ted Drake, who didn't want him getting too carried away.

He was out for 6 weeks and when he returned he scored 4 goals in his first match.
