New stand, new kit. We were winning 1-0 against champions Derby until a late equaliser by Charlie George. I thought we were going to stay in the 1st division for ever!
yeah so much expectation that august day in 75. was in south stand that day as a season ticket holder after the previous season we really fancied our chances of a crack at the first division title. but we changed our style to accomodate chris guthrie and it just didnt work nowt against the lad personally but he just wasnt a division 1 player

That’s what happens when you sell your best players familiar eh ?

You lose players like Salmons and Currie and players like Eddie C , Badger, Hemsley and a few more coming to the end of their careers and replace them with sub standard players and the inevitable happens
Salmons was sold in summer 1974. Eddie left in 1978, TC left in 1976, Badger and Hemsley were still with us for the 1975-76 season. We didnt sell any notable player in 1975

I'm trying to understand why we turned so shit for 75-76?
Furphy tried to sign Francis Lee in summer 1975 but instead signed Chris Guthrie . Furphy's "3rd division" signings not playing as well as in previous season. Furphy got the sack, Sirrel didnt get on well with some of the senior players and tried to replace them with youngsters. Opponents were able to stop TC and Woody without worrying about the rest of the team. Sirrel signed Jimmy Johnstone who wasnt the same as he was at Celtic.

Thanks

Look forward to reading about the season of doom on here in 2 years.

My point is we ended up in rapid decline from 75/76 I know we had Porterfields promotions but he wasn’t allowed to build apart from Edwards who was a quality 2nd tier striker.
The Bassett era we had genuine Premiership players

I remember the game at St Andrews in the 1975/76 season. We lost 2-0 and Len Badger had an absolute stinker. It was such a shame to see a Blades icon coming to the end of his career. I think he was sent off.

There were too many players who had peaked before this season started.

And we didn’t buy any quality either we ended up with players like Franks,Calvert,Bourne,Pedro etc bet Woody wondered what was going on

That’s the point I am making we had some bad replacements for that great team save Alex Sabella.
Twelve years of misery apart from the 4th and 3rd division promotions

We sold Salmons in summer 1974 and it upset me, we went on to finish 6th in the following season. I am talking about the year 1975, we didnt sell anyone important that year.
Correct. The only players with much first team experience that left that year were John Hope & Terry Nicholl.

I remember when we played Fulham at the Lane the press billed it as “Jinxy versus Best” and Jinxy came out on top!

that was a terrible decision silent geoff salmons was a brilliant winger and we never replaced him of course the building of the south stand affected things but we really should have signed francis lee in 75 instead of the cheaper option of chris guthrie who was never good enough for that level

I'm going with 'Jinxy', from now on, with what I know abart Scottish folk.
The publisher of the book took the easy way out wanting to appeal to a wider readership = make more moola.
What a player before the booze took over, those involved with his arrival at BDTBL should hang their heads in shame.
Oh! I alus thowt it were 'Jinking'.

HH, is there any info on the team photo as it seems to be in a twilight zone between seasons 1956/57 and 1957/58.
Love the 'clogger' boots on the front row, only Alf upgraded to the 'continental' style.
Bought a pair, never played in, of the Addidas off a lad at school around '57. his dad was a director at the Lane and if memory serves they weren't in the shops at the time. My grandfather was certain I would get my ankles broken, he also said that when I cut the tops off my old style boots previously.
