Graham Bailey remains our oldest living player. Now 103 years old
Just the one season, it appears,1948-49, Blades relegated, but did help to defeat the old enemy in CCSF at Owlerton 2-4, HT 0-4, with a crowd of 49,980, beating the FAC4thR game at the Lane, V. Wolves, which was 49,796.
Not much to do them days, radio, pictures, Empire & Lyceum, football, cricket and hide the sausage.
I were only 7 then so last one out, not that I even knew abart it.

Got to be November 1946 (we won 3-2 at Highbury) cos Eddie Shimwell left us the following month cos the board refused him permission to run a pub in Darley Dale and he was transferred to Blackpool. He won the FA Cup medal in 1953. Harry Latham on the left

yes got one wrong there silent lol jan 75 think i can remember it snowing heavily that morning while we were waiting for coaches in pond street
I seem to remember it more as pissing it down, not so much snowing. I too was waiting in Pond Street for the SUT coaches. They were held back as they were awaiting confirmation from a soggy Villa Park that the match was intended to go ahead. Cleared up by the time we got to Brum I think. And I remember stood on the open end at Villa Park when 20 or so coppers just waded in and created an open space in the middle of everyone for some unknown reason. When we protested, one of them ran at us with his truncheon shouting 'Get back. You're not in fucking Sheffield now!'. Pointless really, as everyone was just minding their own business waiting for the match to start.
And... Oh yes, we were shite. Really shite.

Man Utd won the league, remember that Villa game at Hillsboro I went because I couldn’t get to Chelsea where we were playing that night. Villa near enough took the ground but no doubt Wednesday fans will deny it!
