can remember watching this game 8 years old the most magical football display i have ever seen real madrid were absolutely brilliant that night

Love this pic. Probably the earliest I’ve seen if players celebrating similar to the way they do today. I was sort of under the impression that at the beginning of last century it would have been restrained handshakes.

Must have been late in the game and the players couldnt hide their delight! Billy Barnes seemed to be the calmest of all! Maybe it is because he knew he wouldnt be playing for the club again.

That was the last time jocks saw any decent football apart from when Harry Maguire played ifor united n a friendly at Cowdenbeath about 10 years ago. Great weekend that was, had a drink with the late great Chris booth that weekend.

On August 24 1968, the Main Stand – which had been largely rebuilt in 1965 – was destroyed by fire which broke out during a First Division match against Leeds United. Despite a crowd of 31,126 there were no casualties. The fire, which is believed to have started near the dressing rooms, rapidly tore through the stand’s wooden construction, destroying it and much of the club’s records, trophies and memorabilia. As a result, Forest played six 'home' matches at nearby Meadow Lane, where they failed to win once.

I saw the last 5 mins of that game, returning home from cricket practice and my grandfather was ecstatic over the play of Real, he had been going to the Lane from around 1900 and weren't a bad judge.

That's ironic, Leeds Utd., how many stands have they burnt down, no games in progress, over the last 70 years?
2, maybe 3 and it's spelt, INSURANCE.

A lot of old wooden stands caught fire. Valley Parade had the highest death/injury toll.

Stuart McCall was playing for Bradford that day and his dad Andy (former top-flight player with Blackpool and West Brom) was stood in the stand and was badly injured :(

Me and a gang of other Gleadless Valley primary school age urchins were at Bramall Lane that day watching the reserves, accompanied by 10 Park Drive fags bought from the Olive Grove pub on the walk down. They used to put the scores of the 1st team matches on the railings at the Bramall Lane end during the reserve matches. Remember being shocked as the Bolton goals went in as we thought we were gonna piss the 2nd division that year. My other memory of that day is finding a pile of hundreds of programs from the Villa game a couple of weeks earlier. They were behind a wall under the cricket pavilion. We all took about 10 each of them home. My Dad told me to bin 'em as they were worthless. (If you're out there, can you remember this Trev F., Pete F, Dave P., Francis K.?)
