I thought Jim Bone was pretty good. Scored a late winner at Spurs in 1973 which resulted in 3 of us having our scarves nicked and smacked through some bushes after the game by some 20-something-year-old fans. We were aged 15. And they also nicked our fish and chips. Thought of them as a wank club ever since.....

My abiding memory of Jim Bone is that of a diving header he scored in front of the kop.

I think it was against West Ham though not sure , but I clearly remember the ball coming in from the left into a packed penalty area about knee high . With boots flying everywhere , he hurled himself between them and buried the ball into the bottom corner .

You don’t score goals like that unless you are incredibly brave and committed to the cause and on that basis alone he is a player I will always remember with a great deal of respect .

Crystal Palace, not West Ham.

Your last paragraph brought to mind, Jon Stead against Wigan.

The only other player I can remember never holding back from diving in, was Billy Whitehurst. Absolutely no fear of anything or anyone and the definition of a cult hero.

Was there on that bank holiday Monday, all kicking off both outside and inside the ground.
We went using firms clapped out minibus, nutty norman driving. Got lost going there, we finally arrived about 2:45, must have been about 1500-2000 blades still trying to get in.
We were sat in the stand to the right of the visitors end, as if you were in that end.
Bottles, glasses, chair seats flying all over down in the bottom corner.
Because it was an open 3 sided ground, all their mob came hurtling round of the kop.

was there great game that was and watched it in alexandra on motd before we headed for the top rank

"...he remains what he has ever been, the most modest and unassuming man who ever grew into the first rank, and will be remembered for years, in Sheffield at all events, as the finest left half-back that English football has known."

And to this day, I maintain, the greatest player we've ever had.

Maybe in 15 years, they'll write something similar about Iliman.

So not 11 May 1968, the day we got relegated?
No, we wore black shorts on the day we got relegated. The only time we did that for home games that season as the white shorts werent bringing us luck, the last home game we won was against Spurs (3-2) on Monday 26th February.

Anyone remember The Albany Hotel?
Aaaah. Only flattened about a year sin.

Something I’ve mentioned before on here but I think worth repeating , is that Len Badger was the finest exponent of the slide tackle that I ever saw and I don’t just mean amongst Blades players.

He had a wonderful technique of not only winning the tackle but at the same time cushioning the ball between his lower leg and thigh such that he was able to come out of it with the ball at his feet ready to take it forward with his opponent left sprawling on the pitch .

The one I remember most vividly is that of him moving quickly towards a player who was about to receive a pass at the kop end and starting his slide some 10 yards or more away from him .

This resulted in him arriving at precisely the moment the player received the ball and the outcome was exactly as described above . Quite extraordinary .

In more recent times we have seen some fine examples of the slide tackle from a number of our players most notably Kyle Walker and Anel but for me , none of them have quite matched Len’s tackle on that occasion.
