Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

Two days later Fulham travelled to Portman Road but Ipswich won 4-2! Also West Ham won 3-1 at Blackburn too!
Was there any reason why there were so many freaky high scores?

I say this because , for example , there are teams now who have their first choice defenders missing due to Covid - for example Leicester who shipped 6 at Man City - Norwich shipped 5 at home to Arsenal

I remember there being a change in the off side rule at some point - it may have even been somewhere within this thread

Too much Xmas pudding or beer ?
Think that sums it up SB, in those days players were placed on trust, non of the high tec monorting or social media like today, obviously some players adhered to the trust, others snook out of their back door and went on the razzle.

Fred helped out with the youth team I played for in the late 70s, even refereed a game when the guy didn't turn up, went to the boot of his car, got his gear, and trotted out onto the pitch in what looked like a 1950s refs kit, lovely bloke, found out years later he was still going to the Lane, on matchday, attending tge social club before the game, always planned to go in and thank him, but never got round to it

I believe that the photo was in respect of the match against Manchester City on 28 8 1954 Monday evening kick off when we lost 0-2 in front of 23,652.

With regard to Fred Furniss I remember playing against him when he played for Ravens in the South Yorkshire Amateur League on a pitch in Whiteley Lane Ecclesfield. He was always a gent & gave encouragement to players of either side when appropriate.

That’s answered a question for me. He played for Ravens who played at Ecclesfield. Been trying to remember that for ages. I once tried to stop a penalty from him at that ground; I heard the ball behind me hitting the net before I realised he had kicked it, and he will have been well into his 50s by then. Thanks

Bert was brought up opposite that pitch on Whitley Lane.
It was Batchelors Sports ground,
Cricket and football. Later on there was another pitch higher up.

Bert was looking at that land on Christmas Day, it's very hard to believe that football was once played there, the land is very sloping.
Bert spent many a Sunday watching the Black Bull play there.
Peter Swan, although banned from every form of football once turned out for a pub team.

Just finished chapter 4 of the book - interesting read up to now.

For the ones that didn't see him play but have heard the stories - yes, he could do magic with a football.

It was because of TC that I HAD to have the no:10 shirt where ever I played in amateur football.

As for that kit - it's the best ever for me and the white socks just balances the whole colour scheme out.

That typeface/font is so nostalgic.
Pre Internet, teletext, if you missed the teleprinter or James Alexander Gordon on Sports Report your only option was a Green Un or the Sunday papers.
So glad you said that ,thought it was just me. I had a little flutter in my tummy when I saw that ,feel so sorry for the kids today.
Remember Everton 0 Sheffield Unit... coming though on the vid printer when we first got back in the first division in 71 ,and thinking bloody hell we've only gone and got a draw ,when the.... ed 1 I went berserk in my Nans front room until the pink panther came on.

HodgysBrokenThumb , would this be the 1959-60 season? Have been trying to work out who were the visitors
There are too many gaps in the scrapbook to come up with a definite answer. The Cup match v Lincoln in March 1960 looks possible (size of crowd/kit/lack of fog or rain), but in the photos from the newspapers, I don’t think the Lincoln kit has a badge. I can’t tell whose badge it is from the photo you posted; any ideas?

I’m fairly certain that’s a Man City badge. The Blades socks I thought, more late 50’s. Not saying Bert is wrong but the photo has a late 50’s early 60’s feel to it. Prior to the small front extension to the John St stand.

We didnt play Man City between summer 1956 and Summer 1961

Remember walking down cherry street to get a ticket for a pre season match the season the new south stand was built . The exit doors were open and you could see across the pitch - the new stand looked like amazing as all we had seen before was the cricket pitch and pavilion - amazing

Pity it contributed (in my mind anyway) to our demise
