I hoped a picture of Brookhill would eventually appear on this thread, with Butler's Dining Rooms (to give it its full name). It was run until it closed by my Uncle Steve and Aunty Edna (my Mum's younger sister) and I have loads of memories of staying there, eating there, working there and playing football in the backyard.
It was two shop fronts wide, which was the serving and dining area, and because of the steep slope of St Georges Close, only part of the cellar was underground, the kitchen itself was at ground level, but the cellar didn't match the ground level, it went under the sweet shop next door.
The pastry for the Desperate Dan pies was mixed in a huge commercial mixer, which also did the dough for bread cakes. The meat and potatoes were chopped and put in giant aluminium (I think) bowls, the pastry lid was put on and the whole thing then went into a big GEC electric commercial oven for baking. I can still hear the click that the latch made as the door closed and opened. That oven did the bread and roasted the beef and pork for lunches, as well as the apple pies. The apples were peeled by Grandma Butler, the only job I ever saw her do, but she was in her dotage in the late sixties.
Butler's also did outside catering, pie and pea suppers, all over Sheffield for up to 200, where the plates were transported in hot water canisters and dried at the venue and the pie and pies served up in double quick time. The aim was always to be back at Brookhill before closing time (1030pm) at the pub on St George's Close, the name of which escapes me.
When Uncle Steve (sadly no longer with us, nor Aunty Edna either) retired, the people who took over the lease and turned it into an Indian had heard so much about Butler's, they decided to keep the name, which was a lovely gesture. There was an article in The Star asking for Steve to get in touch as they'd like to offer him a meal. He was no longer alive, but my cousin's Yorkshire heritage meant that he took up the offer on his Dad's behalf
The Indian owners built a completely new kitchen at ground level and never touched the cellar and everything was still down there, oven, mixer and loads of Butler's crockery. I assume all of that went when the building eventually collapsed a few years ago. The big surprise to me was that the council didn't insist on demolition, it was rebuilt and since the demise of Jessop's, is the only original block in that immediate area.

Saw that in a 1980s Twikker.
As you worked with my dad, it may or it may not surprise you to know that Twikker was banned in our household, but we would always attend the Rag Parade - talk about mixed messages. I'm thankful that I didn't grow up to be a mass murderer with that conflict going on in my head at such a young age.Oldens are the best.
Twikker !! Loved it especially as a kid, looking for those type of jokes, trying to get one over your mates, who's was the rudest. Simpler times and in my case happy ones.
I can remember there was discussion in the household whether I ought to read it or not.
It was my grandma, who worked in the Norfolk Market Hall, who usually brought one home during the week prior to Rag Day(always a Saturday), as the Raggers were collecting and selling Twikker in that time. Apparently, they would descend on the market en mass and completely disrupt everything, it all being taken in good spirit, at least that was my impression on hearing these tales.
Foulke's house would have been far right on this photo, before they were demolished about '75. Houses on the left are still there.

Apologies for not following the thread and non football related but…
Could you help out an old exile….
Anyone have any photos relating to my Grandparents places of work, Balfours in Darnall and Davy United office block at the bottom of Prince of Wales Road?
Long shot I know but cheers anyway

I was at the Sunday Springsteen concert, with one of my brothers. My Dad was a copper and was in the Lane for both concerts. One of his colleagues was a huge Springsteen fan and was delighted to get overtime for it, but was less delighted to be directing traffic at Fox House for both nights.Bert's photo is the Springsteen concert.
I remember one of the talking heads, a sewing lady at Admiral, talking about the infamous SISU away kit they did.![]()
Took this screen grab from the ITV documentary about Admiral Sportswear, 'Get Shirty'. It shows Admiral owner, Bert Patrick (left) showing England goalie, Peter Shilton, a Blades prototype shirt in 1975.
That was an instiution
September 1981. There were 4 county teams playing on the night. Certainly Yorkshire and Derbyshire were there. I remember reading that Graham Gooch played so Essex would have played. It was was apparently a financial disaster & was forgotten very quickly.Which United book featured the photo of the Lambert & Butler Floodlit Cricket Challenge at Bramall Lane? In the book, John Garrett was unsure of the year. I thought it was that 125 Years of the Blades book, but nope!
It was a more recent book than that.September 1981. There were 4 county teams playing on the night. Certainly Yorkshire and Derbyshire were there. I remember reading that Graham Gooch played so Essex would have played. It was was apparently a financial disaster & was forgotten very quickly.
Is the below book you were thinking of? Keith Farnsworth is on Facebook so you could ask him?

My dad worked at Davy United, later Davy McKee and Davy Lowey, I think. He was there from sometime mid-50's to about 1970.Apologies for not following the thread and non football related but…

Wasn’t it Butlers hotel in Nether Edge? Where he stayed.Picasso drew a dove of peace in Butlers in the 1950s.
1980 it was. I wasnt sure of the year and I was thinking of going to the Lane that evening despite that I didnt watch the Blades much during the 1980-81 season. My dad wasnt interested in cricket and I think I had something else to do that eveningIt was a more recent book than that.
It was definitely 1980. The confusion arises because in 1981 the Lambert & Butler Floodlit Cricket Challenge went national with all 17 County sides being involved in matches played at five football grounds around the country, but the Lane wasn't one of them as my photo of the snippet about it in the 1982 Wilsden Cricketers' Almanack shows.
The reason I knew it wasn't Sept 1981 was because at that point, disillusioned with football and preferring to spend my money on records, I was a part-timer so didn't go to a match after that Walsall debacle in May 1981 for quite some time. What I do remember was that at the United home match before the floodlit cricket, Ian Ramsey announced it over the PA, and these girls who were standing near me on the Kop started booing, one of them shouting, "Rubbish! We're not coming!" As a cricket lover of some note I was particularly annoyed by this. If I was at the United match before the cricket, then it was 1980, not 1981.
Then today, and I'm not sure why I was thinking about it, but I remembered that Mike Watterson had organised it during his brief spell on the Board at the Lane after Brealey invited him. Instead of doing my usual Google Search of Floodlit Cricket at Bramall Lane, I Googled Watterson instead and found the following in an obituary, which pleased me no end!
I also remember that Derbyshire won, despite Jim Love hitting a six onto the South Stand roof for Yorkshire.
