Testing my memory here BH. I think the "pop shop" (pawnbrokers) was on the corner of Holland road, also, doubled as a bookies runner, as bookmakers were illigal in those days. My mother used to buy us plimsolls from there, but always wore a headscarf and glasses when she went in, I think she also had 6d on a horse while she was in there, but the bet was always for someone else.Other side of Holland road was a fishing tackle shop that had several barrels full of maggots and sawdust as you walked in
The off license I remember at the London road end of Asline road was called Turleys, nest door was Mrs Briggs paper shop. In the mid 50s the surrounding streets were our playground.

I am told BH, but have no recollection, the fishing tackle shop was Maurice Jackson's, the junk shop, the Glory Hole and the pawnbrokers was Jowitts, there was also Ron's cafe somewhere amongst them

I remember the name Jowitts for the pawnshop, he seemed very friendly with my Gran....hmmmm, the Glory Hole was run by twin brothers , cant remember their names, Great photo posted by Tickhill Blade of the bottom of Holland Rd, about 1960?. Is that a Morris Minor parked up Holland Rd. or a Morris Oxford.?

I didn't realise there were that many shops on Asline Rd as it was not until the opening of Belgrave Medical Centre that Asline Rd came into my life. We had been registered at the doctor on London Rd, almost at the end of Asline Rd., late '73 then transferred to Belgrade when it opened.
Thanks, to you both for my 'Asline Edification', I have found it most interesting.
I do know one fact, though, about the Asline shops and that is the celebrated SUFC and England international William Foulkes had a shop on Asline Rd.
What it sold I have forgotten and he may even have lived there. He also had another shop, Bramall Lane possibly, but certainly in that local.
Therefore, I was going to start this sentence with 'So' but I find that bloody annoying, as do others on here 'Thank the Lord', the pair of you have literally walked in the footsteps of a Giant.
Recon Morris 1000 the Minor had a split windscreen.

That is amazing. It appears his playing days were over in 1905. If he was say 35-38 then he may have lived to 1945 so I could have been in close contact with him at some time.!

Sadly, WF died in 1916, cirrhosis, aged 42. I believe he's buried in Burngreave cemetery.

Thank you for all that info, interesting, most grateful.
I shall certainly take a walk to the top end of the car park the next time I am at the docs. Muse and contemplate a little whilst I stand in what was W H Foulke's back garden, closing the circle started by my great grandfather, who saw Fouke play, and commencing "The Great Adventure" which is following the Blades.
As a side note Dr Mathews who's practice Belgrave was spawned from was the club doctor for many a year post war.

I suffer a similar affliction. I have a long list of (ex) girlfriends who have been somewhat irked by my tendency to get the most important day in their life wrong whilst being able to tell them that my first match was United v Liverpool, October 30th 1971, Currie and Keegan scored.

"But dearest, I remembered that your birthday was either the day before my mum's or the day after my mum's." That was an annual argument we had.

Not quite as bad as you Greenwich,but who is. A few years ago Chloe asked if I would come down for the Charlton game for her birthday.Of course I jumped at the chance. Got down Friday afternoon and had the usual boozey night out . Satdi we had breakfast out, met up with some of the lads, got to football, followed by more drinking, got to about 9pm when she asks when I'm going to wish her a happy birthday. Oopps.
