I used to go to The Rex quite a lot, it was about a twenty minute walk from home but never had to queue to get in. Also went with my dad to see Charge of The Light Brigade and Zulu amongst many others at the Manor.
Many years later a mate of mine told me a story about someone he knew who was working alone in one part of the Manor Cinema as they were refurbishing it as a supermarket, when he saw just a head with no body moving towards him, apparently he couldn’t get out fast enough.

Didn't they demolish the old cinema building and build a new supermarket?

The supermarket was there before the Rex was demolished. The site of the Rex is now the supermarket car park.

Remember as a kid going to a schoolmates birthday party. We were all fed, then chucked into a transit van and taken to the Rex. Jungle book.
Few minutes in and with wonders of modern day technology, a hand written note appeared on-screen. Blah blah Transit van, shift it blah blah.
Must have been written wrong way around to be readable reyt way... I think.

XM657- pleased to see our posts , mentioning Balfour Cinema ,developing into a nice selection of posts and photos of other, long gone, cinemas. The Rex (Intake) and Manor Cinema became my go to cinemas after moving from Darnall. Somebody mentioned seeing .'Lassie Come Home,' at Rex- a right tear jerker. 'The Vikings' with Kirk Douglas stands out as the best film I ever saw at The Manor Cinema.The Plaza (Handsworth) was massive- think it had 3 floor levels-and later a pool hall on one of the floors. By the way, XM657, earlier you mentioned a guy worked at Cravens who was a member of Darnall Horticultural Club. I had my first trip to the seaside (1946) following the end of The War .That ' Horti' club organised a free day trip in a' Charrabanc' to Cleethorpes for about 50 snotty nosed kids- all I remember is the tide was about a mile out.
Love the photos of the old cinemas - I reckon I went to around 20 cinemas in Sheffield. Thanks to everyone who has posted .

The match in the photo was played on Tuesday afternoon 29th February 1972. Billy Dearden hat trick. My headmaster kindly let me the afternoon off work. My dad was working in afternoon shift so he asked his friend to use his season ticket and to take me to the match.

My first ' wagging it ' event , I was only 6 . My older brother just said go home for your dinner as normal and I'll get you at the bus stop. Seamless. Remember a bit of mither the next day , but worth it to see Bill Dearden score his hat trick.

Bumped in to Billy at Donny Races a few years ago ( I've related this before, not going senile honest) and told him that he got me into bother that day.

He couldn't have been more interested or engaging , a proper lovely bloke.

Is that the Rex at Intake or Sheffield Lane Top? Unbelievable queue's to see Lassie, is there 2 queue's for upstairs and downstairs or the circle and whatever it was called?. Bit of old fashioned smut being shown at the Manor, Privates Progress, was it the sequel to Privates on Parade, we forget that at that time the Sheffield Star had almost a full page of what's on at the pictures.

Rex Intake, regards the queues the one starting on the left of the entrance was for the balcony and ran as you see up Mansfield Rd. The right hand side was the stalls and curled round and up Mansfield Rd. The people in the fore ground of the photo are the stalls queue having curled round, out of picture, then going up Mansfield Rd to run parallel with the balcony queue.
Over the years, say1947 to certainly 1959 I only saw queues like that on a hand full of occasions. One I do remember was the High and the Mighty, John Wayne, about an aircraft's flight across the USA.

When I saw the pics of different cinemas in Sheffield, it reminded me of this place. I was taken there once as a small child on a Saturday morning to the children’s matinee. I think we saw a Zorro film, but that could be wrong.

well that's certainly the way I played the game. I think I can honestly say I never once deliberately fouled anyone and I never got into any trouble. My mate would say I never got into any tackles either! He always teases me about that, even now. Met up with him and his wife a while ago and he was telling the wives about our footballing exploits. He said about me, "He was the fittest person I ever knew. We used to call him "The Gazelle". I was very fit back then - I was running 40 miles a week most weeks, on top of my football and badminton. Then he spoiled it by saying, "but he's the only player I've ever known who can go on a football pitch and play for 90 minutes, and when he comes off his kit's cleaner than when he went on!".

Ye! I knew someone like you with his kit after the game, Mathews was his name, you were in good company. If memory serves he played right wing also.

Thanks XM, just after WW2 and certainly into the mid 60s must have been the golden age of cinema for the likes of us. At Heeley we had the Heeley Coliseum and Heeley Palace probably only a couple of hundred yards apart, with the Abbeydale picture house, the Landsdown London Road and one at Heeley Green within walking distance I recall.
Some had great names like Curzon and Essoldo whatever that means etc. Even after closing they still supported the community as Bingo houses and then Supermarkets

Looks like an excellent opportunity to see some great pictures of a time now lost, drink excellent Sheffield Brewery Co ale and maybe even have 10 mins in their lovely little beer garden overlooking the Don (you can't see S6, so no stress).

Sorry to hear of his passing. I was at the testimonial match too, in the kop on the right as you see in the photo below.

West Ham's Clyde Best. Bermudan. If that's the match I am thinking of, a saturday 3pm kick off in the early 1970's, I was there. I can't remember the final score but I'm pretty sure we won, maybe 2 or 3 nil. What I do remember is that some fans were making monkey chants at Clyde and threw bananas on the pitch. How times have changed, for the better. He was a good footballer that lad and a bit of a pioneer. There were very few black footballers at that time and it was great to see because it was so unusual.

There was a midweek match a few years later, v West Ham. I think it was during Ted Heath's disastrous government when they brought in the 3 day working week. It was on a Wednesday afternoon, or something like that. All I remember is that half the kids wagged school that afternoon to go and watch it. I wasn't one of them, but I would have liked to have been.

I always regarded Gerry Young as a Wednesday stalwart, in an era when players didn’t see loyalty as a dirty word. I’m sorry to hear of his passing.
That second photo is great, showing a rate tussle with Sherman.
Interesting that the Leppings Lane stand is being built and that a small covered area which the Cantilever replaces is still there. If my memory is correct that remained next to the new stand for a number of years.

Yes, the photo was March 1966. Birchenall scored both United's goals in the 2-2 draw

I was there, also I think the year before, him and Mick Jones scored in a 2-0 win. Birch made his debut at Stoke mid week and the Derby was his second match (I think)
Always during this time went in the cantilever with my dad and brother with lots of other Unitedites. Never got into any bother.
Over 50 years later I still get that gut wrenching feeling at Derby games, hopefully I won’t get it for many years to come!!

Birchenall scored both goals in the 2-0 win in Sept 1964 (yes, his 2nd match. we wore all white). Jones only goal for us against Wendy was the 2-2 draw in Sept 1966 (Woody scored first)

Sightscreens have certainly changed in my lifetime. They look like a pair of fitted sheets from Brentford Nylons, the bloke who put them up probably got electrocuted by static.

Hodgey Testimonial tie, my Dad bought it in a pub in Greenhill village.
Not mentioned a lot, but not only was he a great keeper but also a well respected international goal keeping coach. Always came across as a really good guy and for me the best keeper I’ve seen in a 1v1 situation.
