There's a guy locally who has one just like this. When I say "locally" I mean somewhere in Sheffield. I've seen it a couple of times around the city and it was parked up at New Leaf garden centre, at Coal Aston, one Sunday. Beautiful design.

For many years Vauxhall's were known for having a fluted bonnet. It was a distinguishing feature of many of their cars. All that seemed to disappear in the 70's and is lost forever as, like most manufacturers, their designs are strongly influenced by aerodynamics and drag co-efficients, meaning they look like wedges of cheese instead.:(
Can see where your coming from with the Ensign. The Ensign didn't have a air inlet , top front of the bonnet though and the name badge was a quite elongated rectangle in a horizontal position, where as the Austin had a squarish badge as in the photo.
Regarding the Vauxhall bonnet flute, all manufacturers, of say up mid 60's, had defining features which "advertised" their products by sight. Remember the water cap covers that had all manner of designs. Eventually it was decided they were killing people in pedestrian, car collisions and were rightly phased out. Fuel efficiency ergo running costs have shaped the car into what we have today, little or no character.
Sadly, people in general are the same. Where are the characters of today, or maybe it's me who should get out more.

I used to go up those steps to where “Wrighty” and Denis Simpson used to design and make cutlery. I still have many carvings and jewellery by Denis.
I always wondered what happened to the yard. A piece of Sheffield History and well
done if it is preserved.

I used to live in lowedges Lupton Drive.a very nice bloke has a hillman minx parked on his drive.with a few other cars.and he drives it around. brings back great memories of late sixties early seventies. my uncle had a hillman minx.use to drive me and my dad to home games.one very famous evening in April 1971.had to park near the old Jessops hospital. because the street was pack with cars.walking down Fitzwilliam street with thousands of Blades. happy days indeed.

If some rumours are to be believed, this may be the site of our new training complex at some point in the future.
These photos taken in Aug 1983. The site has a fascinating history, well documented elsewhere and earlier on this forum.
There may be a some work required to bring it up to Premier League standard but nowt that a bit of hammerite, some grass seed and a few breeze blocks couldn't sort.

Actually, I went for walk round the site today. Only the buildings on the first picture above are left "standing". See below. Maybe a couple of new roof panels as well wouldn't go amiss now.

Looks tidier than Hillsborough...

You mean "Lucky Bobby" because if Swanny hadn't been caught throwing games and hadn't been dropped by England in 1962, he'd have never led the England team to the 1966 World Cup win. That Bobby Moore?
Yep That one, and he married Michelle Keegan🤔

That’s a really interesting anecdote, my whole life is filled with memories that centre around watching the Blades. If I want to look back on particular years I relate it to football.

The Swanny who sold himself the Fowls and his country down the river, ain't even got the bottle to do it himself had to involve others in his boat trip.
'Doc' had him weighed up.

Car enthusiasts.
First photo, just an, to me, unusual plate but also shows how adaptive builders were in the 19th century when one looks down Greenhow St.View attachment 88030View attachment 88035Photo two, what is the car far right, bonnet facing pavement.
I reckon it's an Austin Westminster Mk 1, like a big Cambridge with a 6 cylinder engine. Later ones looked like a stretched Cambridge or Morris Oxford with fins!
The Ford Anglia in the top photo has a Barnsley registration. The mayor of Barnsley's car is THE 1, which is a fantastic plate!

Yeah well...

we're on a different set of taste buds here mate. And that's not to say I am right and you are wrong. But I think there's more to beer than the standard 4% bitter that anybody and everybody can turn out, in any part of the country. I got bored with that many years ago. EVERY pub in the country serves that. I would find it extremely difficult to take you to a pub that doesn't have at least one of these.

Now...Moonshine I used to like when I first tried it. Because at least it was a bit "different" to the old man's regular "bitter". Pale, hoppy, creamy. Yep! Not much to dislike on those counts. But it's yet another "bland" "average" beer. What is it? 4 point what? Without looking it up it's just another "middle of the road" beer.

I go in the Rising Sun occasionally. Usually at the times I go in there aren't many young kids knocking about. I always start by walking to the far left of the bar, to see if they have got anything "unusual" or even mildly "exciting" on. A few months ago they had some fantastic draught beer - (I've forgotten the bloody name now!) but it was a strong IPA at 7% and it wasn't one of their own (surprisingly!). I went in every night for over a week until it had gone. Absolutely fantastic!

Sadly, the guy behind the bar, "Brian", told me I was the only one drinking it! Most folks are put off by the 7% strength. What weasels! Don't they realise they get the effect quicker with less volume and calories?

Then, it disappeared, never to be seen again. And, for me, it was a wasted journey, wandering to the left hand side of the bar, because my choice had gone back to their own label, the rather sweet, "(Easy Rider Impersonator Beer) "Absolution" at 5.2%, or the alternative, slightly stronger, "Voyager IPA" at 6% with an aftertaste of licking an aluminium saucepan.

I prefer to go to the Kelham Island Tavern, Shakespeares on Gibraltar Street, or maybe the Sheaf View pub. It's further out for me, but those pubs have some amazing,"unusual" beers of all kinds of strengths and styles. The Rising Sun, I think, is poor because they aren't in the least "adventurous" - but, being nearer to home, it's one I pop in occasionally just out of curiousity.

A word here for the "Two Thirds Beer Company" - whose pub I have never ventured inside - but who have produced some fantastic beers available for take-out during this lock down period. I am definitely going to pay them a regular visit when this is over. 👍

Have you been down to Two Thirds Beer Co since lockdown eased?
How've you found it?

What a 'niffty' piece of information that is about the reg. plate, all myself and another could muster was that THE 5 had moved onto another vehicle
Info on the Austin I understand but the Westminster was one I hadn't thought of or encountered in my search. Good shout, I recon you may have been in the trade.

No I haven't. And I will tell you why...

I must look on their website 2 or 3 times a week to see what beers they have got on. I've a strong preference for cask ale rather than keg. That doesn't mean I don't like keg beer, but given a choice I'd go for cask every time. I prefer the still, smooth, (sometimes creamy) nature of cask, to the more gassy nature of keg. I'm also attracted to strong pale ales, like IPA's, Double IPA's, that sort of thing. When I say "strong" I'm talking 6% ABV or greater.

They haven't had such beers on cask since things re-opened - at least, if they have, I must have missed it. I just checked their draught beer offerings again now. They have only 1 draught (cask) beer on offer: Thornbridge Astryd at 3.8%. No thanks. And if I want to drink Thornbridge's ubiquitous beer, I've got dozens of Thornbridge pubs, and others, to drink that in around Sheffield. It's not a great differentiator for them - offering "Thornbridge" beers.

They had some amazing beers during lockdown. But it seems to me the choice has gone downhill since then. I can well imagine that the stronger beers are slower to shift, because not everyone likes them, and if I'd got reduced trade, which all pubs have at the moment, I might be reluctant to have something sitting on the bar that's a slow-seller compared to something a bit more "mainstream", because I'd be concerned it wouldn't sell and would be wasted. However, there are odd folks like me who love their strong beer so much that I'll travel miles to find a pub that's got some. I don't have a "local" - never have. I'm a total tart when it comes to beer - I will go to wherever the best chance of getting a strong beer is. And if go in a pub and they haven't got any on, I'll walk out again and go somewhere else.

I keep looking out for positive news on the beer front at Two Thirds. I think they are missing a trick by not updating their Facebook and Twitter accounts regularly as well, for what it's worth. That's often a good way to let customers know what they have got on offer. The first time I see a strong beer on cask down there I'll be back in. I think it's a great bar and the lads who work there are really top notch. I'm just not impressed with the recent range, or lack of it, on offer.

Not at all, I just like old cars, especially ones which remind me of being a little lad! My uncle Frank had a 1960 Morris Oxford (7333W , remember that but not what day it is!). It had a bench front seat with an armrest which I used to sit on! No seat belts. Scary when you think about it!!

Ahh, the bench front seat!
