I can still remember the rumble of the crowd and the pain in my ribs as the crowd surged down and trapped you against the off set barriers. How on earth nobody got seriously injured in those days . (Sorry disregardingHillsborough. )Best thing to happen getting rid of the crush barriers. You had about 5 seconds to brace yourself when the rumble started, you soon learnt not to stand in front of one.
Bassetts first game at home Vs Barnsley and needed a win .... 0-0 and time running out .. some fuck called Agana gets away and sticks it in

I, along with many surged into a Barrier and I swear I can still feel the bruise today ...... not good

Three more of the Wicker and Blonk Street corner. This time Jan 1986.

Repeating myself again but First Class as per., said it before, get a book out. It would be your personal view on Sheffield, someone capturing the essence of the city, often from hither to unseen angles, whilst going about there every day business.
First thought the photos must be a Sunday, little traffic, but looking it up, found it was a Monday. Certainly would have been my first day back at work after the Christmas/New Year break. A sunny but frosty day by the looks of the grass at the corner of Blonk St.
Blades had just beaten Carlisle, on New Years Day 1-0 with a King Keith goal, finishing seventh in Division Two at seasons end.

Flag poles up in the centre of the carriageway on the Wicker opposite Studio 7.

They were used in 1966 World Cup to display the flags of the competing countries.

Can't think they were ever used again, and yet there they are 20 years later.
I’m pleased to inform the world at large that there was an attempt to climb them after a particularly riotous work’s Christmas party - I can’t remember the year, but it will be on record at A & E.......

If you can't remember the year, must have landed on your 'bonce'.

I used to go in the brown cow put further down the wicker..gone now along with most of the other buildings.

Top photo. I think the building on the right had a short life as a hotel in the 1990's. Further down that road on same side of the road was JR Hobson's - sold bar supplies.

If you mean the boarded up building it was a pub, (I had my 1st pint in there can not remember its name it was a Whitbread pub).
Whitbread's had offices above where they did the designs of their pubs they were doing up.
It did then become a Hotel for a few years it was called the Grosvenor, lets just say it didn't look 5 star, infact I'd be surprised if it had any stars.

Correct, but before that it had been a pub, Lion Hotel, I understand, looked in APubOEC book for that.

Three more to complete the Wicker area set. Again, Jan 1986. (Btw XM657, thanks for your previous comments)

Excellent, and in the Nursery St shot memories of Thursday evenings, tram swinging off Lady's Bridge and down Nursery St into a world of iron and steel foundries far removed from where I was reared, south side. The tram en-rout to Owlerton for the Speedway meetings. Guy and Tommy Allott, Len Williams, mi fav, around 1950-52.

I’ve been doing a bit of rummaging and found these, might be of interest.

Gorra photo in fact two of the railway engine but cannot put my hand on them at the moment. One with some lads looking at it whilst stood in a station, the other with driver and fireman. One of the name plates is at the lane, reception area I believe.

There is an SUFC name plate above a shop on Mansfield Road(?) just down from Manor Top.

A framed version of this hung behind the counter in Jack Archers shop, certainly up till 1963.
I can’t remember where I got this from, Ive a feeling it was from someone at work as I had it on my desk for years mainly to bait any pigs who came by.

That would be Olivias, I know they have semaphore signals but I haven’t noticed a nameplate but it will be a reproduction as only a mad man would put an original outside, they’re worth 10k + and probably double that.
