the thing with listing buildings is they have to have some historical or special architectural significance The Co-Op has this where as the old transport buidling doesnt in fact they are usually more prevalent. And this is the sort of thing that pisses me off, and is typical of an underlying story running through this thread. They wanted to demolish this 1920s building, which wasn't listed and had become derelict:

"Going to grandmother's funeral" was the usual excuse!February 23rd 1972.
How many of you were waking up 46 years ago today with a thought of how am I going to skive school today?

I never realised that there was anything but a downstairs! It closed August 1973. Bert used to go in the Castaways Bar downstairs.
It was part of the hotel, nobody called it the Castaways Bar it was just The Buc.Was it owned by the hotel or was it a separate enterprise and closed because the building was going to be demolished?
Great bar that first time I’d come across plastic glasses.Never got in here but was always fascinated by it.View attachment 37111

That's not what I meant. The building itself is different today.
I wondered whether it had, though often when people blame the Hun it turns out it was the council. However, even if that's true and that building was replaced, the corner building has shrunk since the war. See the following picture then have a look at Google maps.

i like the old coop building especially the staircase which is a wonderful piece of design, but architecture is like art very subjective
