A touch before my time, ancient, but my Dad was there.

The problem that Huddersfield faced in those high-spirited (!) days of away fans coming to ‘take the home end’ was that they didn’t generally have the numbers to defend the Cow Shed as well as the big Eastern terrace.

That being said, the gate for Boxing Day 69 was 31,000 which was double their usual gate. Although Huddersfield won the division that season, their gates were typically only in the mid-teens. This was a top of the table clash, though, with United sitting in 2nd place at the time, I believe.

Sounds like Boxing Day ‘69 was a lively affair...

Went with our kid to that, ended up on a double decker service bus. Stood on the Cowshed, a bit of bother, if I remember correctly.
Think they were promoted that season, Steve Kindon, a main man for them along with Cherry and Elam? in the back four. Think we lost 2-1 with a late Reece goal. Could be wrong it’s 50 years ago.

We finished 6th that season, got prpmotion the following season. Steve Kindon was a Burnley player at the time, didnt play for Huddersfield until 10 years later. Were you thinking of Frank Worthington?

The programme notes for one of our subsequent home games after the defeat at Huddersfield, indicate that United’s team was riven with a flu-bug in the run-up to the game and that John Harris had wanted the match postponed. The Football League refused our request.

The first version of Tom Hark I remember was usually when the opposition were on top and their fans were getting a bit vocal so the Kop would respond with...
....You love to sing,
I don't know why,
Coz after the match,
You're gonna die.
I remember it as happening after the opposition scored then it would be

"The [name of opponents] sing
I don't know why
Cos after the match
They're gonna die"

Don’t know what I was thinking Silent, perhaps I’m stuck in some sort of time warp. Or age is taking its tole
we should have gone up that season silent might correct me but i think we won 1 game out of our last 6 to drop out of contention

Do you know who they are? I remember my grandad telling me forty years ago that his sister followed the Blades everywhere and was given some kind of award or recognition by the club for her loyalty. I’ve since asked my (90 year old) mum about it and she didn’t really know much. I’m just wondering if she is one of these? I suspect not looking at the coach, it seems a bit later. I’ve always assumed from my grandad’s age that it was pre-war. I could be wrong but I think if it was after the war, my mum would know more about it.

The photo came from this article.
It just describes it as "1940s". I'm guessing it's post-war.
