Written by Barry Hines who wrote Kes (Kestrel for a Knave)

Barry Hines lived at Broomhill for a period of time and used to go and watch the Blades.

He wrote Threads and I'm pretty sure there's a scene featuring Bramall Lane.

I think he was writer in residence or something similar at Sheffield University in the early seventies. I remember seeing him occasionally in the Arts Tower lower ground floor coffee bar, so he must have mastered the paternoster.

Yes it is I remember that game Bob Hatton had a go at Trenton for not being on the end of a cross he put in the box. Steve Neville played for Exeter & then signed for us during the following week. He replaced Wiggan in the team & scored 2 on his debut at Millwall where we won 4-1.... it went downhill from there!!

Thanks for that SB, watched the whole film. Enjoyed being transported back 39 years and the strange thing is I was 39 when it was made. The outdoor shots some I knew others I didn't know, will have to look more closely next time. Nice Cruyff turn in the box by a Blades player in the football match scene.

I didn't realise Barry Hines was a Roman Catholic.

bit of a random one and the answer is probably in here but being over 720 pages and not many of the photos are titled its hard to find but does anyone have any photos of Alan Kelly from the coventry fa cup game in 98? working on a project and cant find that many of him apart from these 3. I was wondering if anyone had one when he was on supporters shoulders at the end of the game?

There definitely is a photo with Kelly on supporters shoulders, thought I had it but can't find it at this time. will post when it turns up. In the mean time here's another, 99% certain it's the same game but no info. with photo.Alan Kelly jubilant.jpg

That brings back memories of an amazing evening against a full-strength European champions team. Mind you, the journalist refers to the 'virile management' of Harry Haslam. Worth remembering for those who think standards of journalism are declining. It was good to be reminded of the mass Liverpool bookings and the Matthews goal-line clearance - 2 incidents I do remember.

Alf Ringstead. Not sure who we're playing, though.

Kids looking through't railings, that was me only further to the right just Lane side of players entrance. If you couldn't get to see, men would help sort it out so as you could. Every now and then copper would tell you to keep your hands and arms behind railings in case ball came trapping you against railings. Big "No No" was standing on concrete wall holding on to top of railing. Copper would be there in a flash, giving you a reight ticking off.

Certainly looks like it, Silent. Looking at the action photos in the programme for the Colchester United game, the Exeter game was played on a noticeably sunny day and we scored our goals at the Kop end.
