Jim Furnell was in goal in those days
Yes he was Arsenal's regular keeper between 1963 and 1968 but Bob Wilson played in that 2-2 draw at the Lane in November 1963 (the only time he played at the Lane in the 1960s). McClelland and Burns were the other Arsenal keepers in the 1960s after Jack Kelsey

It makes you realise how old you are when people don't recognise good old 'Doc'
I'm old enough to have caught the very end of Doc's career. I looked at the team photo and decided it looked like Gerry - must have been the hair. But on further consideration it is obviously Doc from his positioning.

Which photo was it?

Sir Bob of Atkins after that goal at Millmoor ..

The lad smiling on the right was in a fatal car crash on the way to see the Blades at Stoke - he was very badly injured and sadly never really recovered.

The young whipper-snapper is from a well-known Blades family.

The curly haired lad was from Dinnington and the last time I bumped into him he'd become a Man United fan!

sitwell is correct that the keeper is Jim Brown. The match was the 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Sept 20th 1975. Cliff Calvert's debut for us after having signed from York earlier this week.

I was supposed to go to the match with my schoolmate. We told our school that we were going to Newbury for the day but instead we caught the train to London. We realized that we would have to leave the ground at half time if we went to Upton Park as we would be back really late for school if we stayed till full time (the walk from Newbury station to my school is three miles!) so we watched Arsenal v Everton instead (left the ground before Arsenal's equalizer) but we got into trouble when we got back to school. The housemaster was looking for us in his car before finding us about a mile away from school. We were grounded for a week!

1952-53. We won the 2nd division!
Thanks for that Silent.
I understand Ted Burgin still alive and lives in Rochdale according to Alpine blade, Jimmy's son.
Must be a good age as I was 12 then, so can probably add on some 8 years at least.
Happy Christmas to you.
Always enjoy your instant dates etc, photo information that you keep us informed with.

Five years to the day before I was born.

Hawksworth and Furniss are still alive too. I used to work with Albert Cox's daughter. She retired about 8 years ago

Thanks for the correction. For some reason I thought it was the hammers keeper Bobby Ferguson.
Nice story, too!

One of the best threads ever. Every picture of The Lane is recognisable, the streets around it, the church spires above John street. I remember the old pavilion in the car park but never seeing it as a 3 sided ground (except for the John street rebuild).

This thread really does remind me how lucky we are to be able to look back at 100 year old photos and feel the lineage that makes us so fucking brilliant, grounded in our historic environment. Over time, in the long term, the value of this, will, hopefully increase.

We're coming to get em!

Utb, merry Xmas, god bless one n all.
