Didn't think our Chris was into these overseas players

Always felt he stuck with UK types that he has first hand experience of tbh

Al Ahly are Egypt's biggest club so if he plays for them he should be decent, and the article says he's a key man.

Don't know what he'd cost but he could be better value than anything we'll find in the British market.

If this is right it's good to see us looking at foreign based players.

The last Egyptian at the club was a roaring success.... so why not.

Oh yes Mr Fathi or pronounced Farty depending on which commentator you listened too! We didn't get much value out of Warnock's foreign pursuits did we!?

He was a decent attacking fullback who was unfortunately brought in to somehow be our midfield playmaker.

Never got much of a chance in his chosen position.

I can understand the reluctance where foreign players are concerned, but surely it's based on ancient parochialism?

Football's a global game, and although our reach has recently consisted of a 2-300 mile radius, things will and must change. As with most transfers it's about judgement, and so far we've had a generally good to outstanding trade where this is concerned. I'm glad that we're extending our interest in players further than the UK, it shows that we're making an effort to steal a yard on other, less ambitious clubs. This may come to nothing of course, but it's refreshing that we're challenging the view that says 'leave foreign players alone'. I can recall a Greek fullback who did pretty well for the Blades, so let's be open minded where this is concerned.

I'm all for foreign imports too as we have seen the impact that they've had at reasonable prices such as at Huddersfield. But I'd rather us sign players who have the greatest chance to adjust to the English league and lifestyle and the North Europeans have a greater chance. The German imports at Huddersfield have excelled.I'm not quite as keen on left field imports from the likes of Egypt but who knows he could be amazing.

I think the once highly regarded British qualities of 'getting stuck in' are now no longer the sole ownership of British players. Any adjustments that foreign players may have are sometimes related to environment and feeling as if their fellow players are comfortable with their arrival. Personally I can't see a problem with this, and it'll be down to whether the player is good enough, nothing more than that. United have plenty of experience within their playing ranks, so I'm sure that any new player will be made to feel at home as soon as they arrive.

We havent really had much success in foreign markets barring the two excellent Greeks we had in Borborkis and Dellas. Other clubs have made a success of such ventures and now we are in the Championship now might be the right time to look again at the foreign market

I'm sure they'll be made to feel welcome but if they don't speak good English, has a wife and family who doesn't speak English and then have to adjust to a totally different style of football from what they're used too, then the chances are slimmer of success than they are with a similar quality player who is from German/Holland Scandinavia etc that has less of the above issues. I think we should look at the Huddersfield recruitment as I said as a good example to bring in decent players from Europe. Just my opinion though.

Does he qualify ? He's only played 6 games for Egypt since 2014 according to Wiki.

I doubt he has an EU passport.

Can see him getting a work permit.

No disagreement from myself fella. As you say, good communication, on and off the pitch, is vital to whatever else follows.

I recently watched the Patrick Viera and Roy Keane programme about who made up the best Man Utd and Arsenal teams. Viera's grasp of English made it clear why he was so successful when he played for the Gunners.

You don't think he's got us mixed up with the pigs.
Apparently Carlos the Jackass said they made a bid for a defender who was a full international, who then turned them down due to only wanting to go to a premiership side.

Maybe a coincidence that both Sheffield sides have bid for international defenders.

To be fair some of the lads we've had over the years have struggled with English too! ;)

Saad Samir.

If he comes we've got to nickname him 'Happy'. Too good an opportunity to miss.
