When we hired him I remember saying "if this man, with this CV, can't get us out of this division - who can?" Sadly it hasn't worked out, the scale of the mess that Clough left behind was underestimated by many, including I. Adkins inherited a squad of largely poor athletes, many with dismal injury records, on wages disproportionate to their talents (see the numerous players who have left us on downward trajectories - several into League 2), however his earliest decisions last summer really crucified him.
I wrote on here before the season had started that I was starting to worry a little bit about Adkins, we all knew what our biggest problems were from last season; poor defenders (McEveley the worst of them), a lack of mobility in all areas of the pitch (Murphy an exception to that rule), not enough height and a weak spine starting at goalkeeper. His answer was to sign Woolford, Sammon and Sharp, no defenders and make McEveley his captain. That remains to be some of the worst management I've seen at Sheffield United in recent years (and recent years have been terrible). When we lost 4-0 to Gillingham with a back 5 of Long, Freeman, Collins, McEveley and McFadzean, in hindsight, nobody should have been at all surprised. There was talk of "big consequences" but even worse still, he didn't do anything. Instead he allowed a few decent results (not peformances) to cover everything up... And then the window shut, Murphy sold, despite the "not going anywhere" spiel, crucially he wasn't replaced (see Stephen Quinn, Nick Blackman, Harry Maguire, Matt Lowton, Kevin McDonald for examples of what inevitably happens next).
The results continued to be poor, the performances inept, but above all of this the response from Adkins was virtually non-existent. There was no radical change in tactics, formations or style of play and the January transfer window (incredibly) didn't see us strengthen at all, though he did manage to ship out a lot of the dross. Week after week the same boring, dishonest interviews, insulting to the 18,000+ fans as if they hadn't just been and watched the game for themselves. His parting shots at the fans were poor of a man who despite his failings as a manager, I always thought was a decent bloke. There is an element of truth to his accusations, we can whip up a bit of a nasty atmosphere, but we've been in free fall for almost a decade, half of which has been spent in League 1 now, you'd think there would have been more of an understanding.
Truth be told, I would have given him another shot at it, our hire and fire policy means that many of our managers can legitimately argue they weren't given enough time to build. But my views are purely based on his CV, as Blades manager he has done nothing to make me sad to see him go and he's the master of his own making. Really hope Chris Wilder can sort out this mess, but sadly I'm not sure he can. Our problems go deeper than the manager and having watched McCabe holding court with the fans the other night I'm pretty sure I know where they lie.
