i thought at the time, adkins has lived off scunthorpe & southampton for a long time. scunthorpe is impressive but southampton with the squad he had in League 1 he probally shouldve got successive promotions. but then after that 3 out his next 4 jobs. reading had there lowest finish since they got promoted from division 2, came to us had we had our lowest finish for 34yrs, & now charlton who have never been so low. you have to go back to 1925/26 to the last time they were in 20's in the 3rd tier

I was shocked to see Scunnys position, mainly I suppose because they seemed to be one of our bogey teams

Southampton did get back-to-back promotions to the Prem with Adkins at the helm. Then they sacked him after a short while into that Prem season (although outside the relegation zone) and they replaced him with Pochettino.

A few years ago I was working at Ellesmere Port, subject turned to football, one of the young lads was a Tranmere fan, I made some comment, about playing us etc Are you taking the Piss!!! Not the response I expected, didnt realised they had dropped a couple of divisions.

Maybe its down to age, but you or at least I tend to associate certain clubs with when we crossed paths, we have gone up/down but, if someone says Oldham, its plastic pitch upper mid table team, Scunthorpe, neat little ground, well run, mid table, and martyn woolford playing a blinder!

And with Grimsby top of the national league, bit of bragging rights if they swap places

a mate was invited to take his son to Scunny academy, but he hated the place and the coaches. He was at Boston United and remains there as despite paying, the set up is apparently fantastic.

Yeah and a big catchment area. Like Chezzy and Bradford, they’ve gone backwards since that league one season…

(although chezzy weren’t challenging for anything other than survival that year)

Over riding memory of Scunny ,think it was when Gary Speed was manager, at the Lane, dont think he had been manager for long, we played them off the park, especially first half, fantastic performance, but couldn't score, countless chances went begging, walked out wondering how we lost, just didn't seem possible,,,never mind losing 0:4

For me it’s Shrewsbury and Ipswich. I just assume we won’t beat them, because we never used to beat them.

True, it's a bit of shock to look at the bottom of div. 2, with the exception of maybe Stevenage the bottom 9 are all what we may call established football league clubs, established yes, rock steady ... not any more, unfortunately.

That was such a bizarre match. I’m sure their only shots on target were their 4 goals.

It was like there was some sort of force field in front of their goal stopping us from scoring. Crossbar, post, post, off the line etc.

Over the years we have all been to games when you get that feeling, it's going to be one of those games, play all day and not score, oddly enough sometimes you sense that in the first half, not the 87 minute.

But that game sticks in my memory, sat in the BL upper, looked like we would score with every attack and as you say 'force field' I don't remember their keeper pulling off world class saves, or defenders throwing themselves around, blocking shots etc and then if it couldn't get any worse, they brought on Jonathan Forte, who set up another goal

maybe as these were big teams & it quite recent when they were tough League 1 fixtures. i have felt a turning tide the last 5-10 yrs that big league sides are dropping Bury went bust, Chesterfield, Grimsby, Leyton Orient, Hartlepool, Notts County, Southend, Tranmere & York all got relegated the last 6 yrs to add to & the "new" are replacing them Fleetwood, Crawley, Forest Green, Harrogate, Barrow, Salford, Sutton,

You are right, it's weird in that I can obviously see, accept a new club is in the league, like those you mentioned but never joined the dots up re who has gone.

Doesn't seem that long ago that Scarborough seemed to be there/thereabouts all the time, real chance of staying in the league, going full time, becoming settled, established, that didn't last long

A particularly drab 0-0 as I recall, would never have remembered it myself if not for the whole shoes debacle!
