Nick Montgomery - not good enough

I've said it time and time again, since i first saw him play, that he is not good enough to play for United. all i hear in response is:

1. "He works hard." anyone who plays for us should work hard, particularly if its way above their level. i can show you over 15,000 every week, sat in the stand who would 'work hard', its not enough.

2. "He's committed to tackles." yes he throws himself in a lot. gets skinned a lot, but he does make some important tackles. im afraid we are not meant to be strugglers in this division and we were never meant to be strugglers in the championship. 'making tackles' and not being able to kick a ball to a red shirt is NOT GOOD ENOUGH for this club.

3. "We need a workhorse." No we dont. we need footballers. people who can pass and move and are intelligent in a United shirt. if all you need to do is put in the odd tackle and work hard, why dont we put a centre half in midfield. games are won and lost in midfield, get some talent in.

4. "He's stuck by us." Actually, we've stuck by him. Every time i watch him, he brings absolutely nothing to the team from a footballing point of view. other clubs would have replaced him, then dumped him years ago. why are we still picking him?

5. "He's good in derbies." I got told by several Blades we didnt need KMac today. I'm pretty sure this was a derby and Monty was useless.

It's not that i dont like him. I know he works hard, i know he tries his best and i know he wants to play for us.

But the reason we got relegated from the Premier League is we didnt have a quality central midfield player. Why do we still have a squad whereby when one player (KMac) gets injured, we again dont have a quality central midfield player.

If someone wants to buy him, get him sold. if his contract runs out, please jettison him.

P.s. its not his fault alone we lost today. but iv thought this for years and years and today was the last straw.

Not from me. I have always maintained Monty is bobbar.

All he is, is a pair of legs. He can run for ninety minutes. So can a horse. See where I'm coming from?

But, we'll stay by him until his testimonial. It's the law.

The lack of Kevin McDonald and his control and passing was obvious last saturday. Today in a game where the opposition pressurised us as soon as it dropped in midfield it stood out a million miles.

I have never been an 'apologist' for Monty, I have appreciated the effort he has put in over the years and has played much better than given credit for. But in this team, in this system where keeping the ball is given preference I'm afraid he is a liability. Doyle doesn't give the ball away as much as Monty. Way too many times today we had no-one showing and taking responsibility for the ball in midfield.

It had to be Quinn, Willo, Doyle, Flynn from the start, when we realised the problems halfway through the first half, Wilson should have changed it, when he did it was too late.

Thought today was set up for monty, but they swamped midfield and they actually beat monty at his own game. Today wasn't a day for football in centre mid. We got overrun and I'd say that only Doyle comes out with any credit from midfield 4.

What game would that be? Miscontrol? Shadow chasing? Slipshod passing? Treating the ball as a hand grenade? Conceding free-kicks?

No, he gave a master class, as ever. Head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch.
 
Whenever we've a difficult game, the calls go out for Monty.

We rarely win the difficult games.

Many years ago, when we were playing better teams and had no expectations other than a draw or honourable defeat, there was a sort of sense involved in reaching this decision as a young, scampering Monty covered every blade etc etc in our honour and embodied out plucky, limited, underdog status. And on his day he was good at what he did too.

Now, we're in the third fucking division and the bloke is over 30. Maybe it's time to consider a new approach for all parties?

KMc was injured. What realistically could Wilson do ?

Monty was the only real choice to replace him but is no where near match fit. A fully fit Monty is a useful addition to any team at this level.

Bad day at the office. Monty wasn't great but then who was ?

What are you on about.? Sure he was a weak link today, but pigs battered our midfield. Got at us and forced errors. Macca would not have had any time on the ball.

Montgomery was embarrassingly bad today. Quinn wasn't much better. Willo and Doyle made half-decent contributions; not brilliant, mind but not inept, not incompetent. Those words attach to one and one only. That's observation, not scapegoating.

i dont mind if he's a full back or something that works hard, but a central midfielder? key position. needs quality that he doesnt have. the fact he's over 30 is irrelevant. he's never had any quality.

You claim to know about football, but what do you actually know? Our passing game was completely snuffed out today by a team that just went out and closed us down.

You're right, the team lost this one. the only player who looked decent i thought was Lowton. Ched in patches.

but we're talking about the most important position on the pitch and he's not good enough. im not blaming him for losing the derby, but after years of mediocrity iv had enough of watching him play.

hes a good lad who works hard. hes not good enough to play for us. and if he's the only option we had when KMac got injured, thats poor management. its not Monty's fault for getting picked but we have to get shot of him.

I can see nowhere in any of Foxy's posts that he has ever given Montgomery anything remotely approaching hero status.

I did. I wouldn't have played him either, And he wasn't very good. As always, you manage to miss a few key issues. Like lots of others were crap too. I nearly despair that we're relying on a midfield pairing of Monty and Doyle, but thank fuck my views on football and United aren't defined by such an incredibly narrow view.

And would you have posted your opinion if we'd won/drawn? No, of course you wouldn't, which in my opinion makes you a bitter mardy arse.
 
Montgomery should not be scapegoated. Nor should anyone else for that matter, but I think when you've just lost to Wednesday a touch of mardiness is in order.
 



We have not learned today that Monty is not good enough - he has never been good enough
PS Neither is Cresswell!
