As far as I am concerned, United need to be considering a lot more than managers that are available right now. If we have got the money that was suggested ("gamechanging" according to McCabe), then any other League 1 manager must be considered regardless of their club. There's only really Jackett that I think we can ignore. So rather than Clough, Saunders, Pulis or Warnock, what about Smith at Walsall, Davis at Crewe or Parkinson at Bradford? Other than mentions for Slade and Robinson, there doesn't appear to be any other League 1 managers in the frame.
Now, I suggest those three but I wouldn't want them. Personally, I believe there are two standout candidates in League 1 who might not be considered immediately as "gettable" but are if the money is "gamechanging" - step forward Darren Ferguson and Uwe Rosler. Both play exciting and attacking football whilst not resorting to kick and rush and, if the money is right and the ambition is the Premier League, they might be willing to turn their back on a short term project at Peterborough and Brentford for a more long term project at United? Without sounding all Wednesday like, we are bigger than both those teams and the long term goal of SUFC is far in advance of their current clubs. Brentford and Peterborough, at best, can compete for top half Championship, possibly a surprise Play Off win a la Blackpool. United, on the other hand, showed in 06-07 that the club could grow in the Premier League and are certainly capable of matching the likes of Stoke and Norwich, maybe further and gatecrashing European football? Long term wise, with the supposed money available, United are a great project for any manager who fancies a gamble.
I'd be on the phone to Brentford about Uwe Rosler. I'd also be having a word in his agent's ear if Brentford tell us to go forth and multiply.
