If we don’t go up this year, I expect the US owners to make a change either in the Summer or by Christmas - if we aren’t pushing top 2. That will be the limit to their patience. They have invested serious money and need to get a return by promotion to the Premier League asap. We are in a different landscape now to the McCabe and Prince A years. Wilder needs to perform and get promotion or he will be replaced. That is how US businessmen work.

If we were to change manager I think we need someone who can be the catalyst for a different football philosophy that can be embedded throughout the club .
Last season some of the teams we played looked like they were playing a different game altogether.
It's not just us but there's a way of getting success in the championship that isn't codusive to competing in the PL, it's one of the reasons promoted teams struggle .

It'll take time to get there but I think it's the best way of being a perennial yo-yp club.
We tried it with Jokanovic of course but maybe it was a bit too much too soon at that point with the old 352 and Wilder's old guard still being very much a part of the furniture.

Now though, with a squad lacking an identity other than "pass it to Gus and hope he can do something", its the sort of thing that could breathe some life back into us and get us moving forward.

I wasn't suggesting slav but I had it on good authority that the players liked him and agreed with his approach ,they just couldn't make it work.
As you say, too much too soon , wrong ingredients.

We didn't try with Jokanovic. It was a good appointment, we just didn't back him! Ad you said, He wanted to play a formation that we didn't have the players for. But mostly we couldn't afford to get new players in.

Frustrating I know, but very short sighted. I think Wilder and Hecky were also short sighted appointments. We need a complete culture change, which I think the new owners will drive.

Was hoping Billy would be all badged up and cutting his teeth in management by now…To coincide with another Wilder back door departure.

Would any manager be out at Christmas if not pushing top 2 next season or would the new guy get a grace period?

Seem like a lot of fans want a whole new approach having seen how some other clubs are playing and I’d say that would require a full summer/pre-season appointment.

Rohl - 100/1

Surely the most highly rated young manager in the known universe would be at shorter odds than that?

Looking through the list in this article, there's a few names that are surely there for nought besides comedy value. There are though, several that I'd happily see us look at hiring, were we to see Wilder depart. I could ramble for a while, but I'll pick out a select few that caught my eye:

No:
  • Russell Martin. The guy was desperately out of his depth in the Premier League this season, and is heavily responsible for Southampton's high possibility of achieving the lowest points tally ever in a PL season. All because he was incapable of adapting away from playing tippy-tappy passes in his own 6-yard box.
  • Gareth Southgate. While having a knight of the realm might be an interesting quirk of hiring him, I've never liked his tactical approach to football. Too negative, never had the gumption to allow his side to try and control a game and win from the front when against equal opposition - always instead had to try and play like an underdog. Poor mentality to have, especially in the Championship, where we have to be considered a "big fish" these days. Would feel like something of a sideways move if he were replacing Wilder.
Danny Rohl: Absolute pisstake of a suggestion. Miserable turd of a manager, who has (so far) no major achievements, and yet has been treated like a deity by those of an S6 persuasion.
Honourable mentions: Steven Gerrard, Robert Page, Phil Parkinson, Neil Warnock.

Yes:
  • Gary O'Neil. Thought he did a very solid job for Bournemouth. Got them into a position of being quite defensively solid, at least in comparison to letting in 9(?) at Liverpool under Scott Parker before he got the job. Steered them to safety before being (in my opinion) unfairly dismissed. Also did decently well for Wolves before they let him go. I recall he went on Sky for a Monday Night Football, where they'd won at Bournemouth on the weekend. He went into detail about a few things that implemented in the tactical setup to exploit certain weaknesses in the B'Mouth defence, and I remember being really impressed.
  • Liam Manning. Both times we've played Bristol City this season, I've been really impressed by their style of play. Quite an aggressive side from an offensive perspective, in that they are eager to move the ball up the pitch, rather than backwards or sideways, but they have certainly lacked a definitive goal threat, which is why they aren't a definite inclusion in the playoffs yet. Manning has a team there which is very adept and comfortable on the ball, and moves the ball intelligently to create openings. With a squad like ours, I think he'd be able to do great things.
  • Chris Davies. Has built a delightful team at Birmingham, admittedly with a seemingly blank chequebook. Our team that won League 1 was the best team I'd ever watched at that level, and he has them on course to exceed our points tally by a modest margin. Would likely be extremely difficult to prise away from Brum at this stage, but still one I'd be very interested in us approaching.

It'd have to be Ange Postecoglou, Nick Montgomery, Harry Kewell set-up, then add accordingly to the coaching team.
United would raid the Japanese and South Korean leagues, it'd be free-scoring, never boring football.

Leeds owners apparently quite keen on Postecoglu.

They're pretty ambitious, I wouldn't be totally shocked if they part ways with Farke despite promotion.

State of that list FFS.
Wouldn’t be upset to see Mark Robbins in charge, very surprised to see him sacked from Coventry.
Robbins is a busted flush, IMO. His impact has been lost since Cov sacked Viveash for alleged naughtiness. Like Wilder without a Knill.

Just dropping some sensible suggestions on managers I think could take us to the next level.

If we don’t go up the chances are we will have to make plenty of sales and maybe have to spend quite a few years in the Championship doing a re build. So if it is the Championship for a few years personally I believe we need a young coach with new ideas and a new style of play with a team he builds, young and new ideas is the way forward imo.

So a totally left field one and is not because he was once here but I’m going to say Travis Binnion. Currently Man Utd u21s manager, many young coaches in recent years have gone on to better things from similar roles at Man Utd, McKenna at Ipswich, Cochrane at Brentford who’s first team coach, head of coaching and Tuchel has brought him into the England set up, Ramsey now managing Minnisota etc..

All young coaches who had been in similar roles as Binnion at Man Utd. Binnion is 38 and at some point he will be headhunted and given a managers job imo, he has always wanted to be a manager and is someone I’ve always rated as a coach albeit with younger players but maybe now is the time for him to step up. Nobody on that list jumps out at me tbh so why not try and unearth a new young manager ourselves.

But all that is irrelevant because we are going up 🙌

I also like the idea of someone like this. That being said, we don’t know what our financial position actually is.

If we have a decent amount of money available, I’d be happy to see an experienced or ‘big name’ (not as in lots of letters!) coach come in and attract players which have possibly been beyond our reach in previous years. I don’t mean a Rooney, Gerrad, Lampard or dare I say it - Robson, more of a Bielsa type coach.

If we have limited funds, then I’d like to see us bring in a younger more progressive manager to develop a new style and identity of the club.

I don’t know much about many of the names mentioned on the thread, but I do think Liam Manning would be a good option.

Think the new owners would think about Hecky again? Knows the lads like Arblaster now in the first team and we would be able to afford some from Preston he might want to bring in

After a fortunate 1:0 win against Cardiff tomorrow.

"I'll tell you what Seth, I know the lefty woke keyboard warriors were going on the internet calling for my head, but I showed them who is the real master of football today."

No chance, Hecky was lucky he had the likes of NDiaye MGW Berge etc.
If we are going to change manager we need a big change bring in a DOF and go for a more expansive style of football

We're third in the table and let's bear in mind we've had two season ending injuries to key players, Souttar especially.Started on minus two points too.

Burnley and Leeds are more expensively assembled sides than ours. The pre season recruitment left us short of depth hence having One up top at times.

So it's remarkable that we've been in the top two for most of the season and it's not done yet.Oxfotd and Plymouth were fighting for their lives and Millwall is never easy. But you thought that a good time to say look what else is out there at this point?! I despair at times at some of our fans.

No we didn’t try it with Slav he had to work with what we had -that wasn’t what was on offer when he accepted the job
