Could be some more about to hit the first team squad

Chris Wilder calls them ‘session wreckers’: Players who, during training sessions, struggle to keep pace.

It a phrase those looking to make the grade at Bramall Lane best remember. And explains why, after impressing with their attitude and work ethic, three of Sheffield United’s brightest young talents will be joining the first team squad in Portugal next month.

“Regan (Slater), Rhys Norrington-Davies and Jake Eastwood are coming over with us,” Wilder confirmed last night. They are in the first team building, they change downstairs and they’ll be involved in our pre-season games. That’s because they’ve made that step-up, they’ve taken the same step David Brooks did this time last year and hopefully a few more out of the academy will be taking too. They’ll be travelling with us and are a part of the camp.”

United’s visit to The Algarve, where they will face Maritimo in a friendly, is arguably the most critical part of their preparations for the new Championship campaign. It is there, under the burning sun and in soaring temperatures, where coaching staff will look to equip them with the fitness levels required to implement the attack-minded game plan which, against all odds, took them to the brink of the top six last term.

Eastwood and Slater are already familiar faces, with the latter’s combative performance during an FA Cup tie at Ipswich capturing Wilder’s imagination. Norrington-Davies less so. But the defender, United’s manager suspects, has got what it takes.

Although they boast only five senior appearances between them, Wilder is minded to keep all three in South Yorkshire at the beginning of next season after watching Brooks, now a Wales international, make the breakthrough before last summer’s training camp in Spain.

Originally scheduled to join Chesterfield on loan, United cancelled the move after he impressed at the Toulon Tournament and were rewarded with a series of match-turning displays against the likes of Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.

“I’ve always maintained the biggest learner for them isn’t me or Al barking at them,” Wilder, referring to his assistant Alan Knill, said. “It’s training with the likes of Couttsy (Paul Coutts) and Flecky (John Fleck) because they have to survive. I won’t have session wreckers as we call them. They’ve got to be up to the standard.”

“Brooksy was going out on loan and then forced his way in,” Wilder added. “That’s the example for these and the rest of the academy lads to follow because it shows what is possible and what can be done. How you can make the breakthrough.”

Following Wales, Norrington-Davies is the one I’ve been trying to keep an eye on for a bit as he’s already been involved in the Wales set-up (though not yet senior). The left-hand side of both United and Wales are ones I think could be improved on – Lafferty for whatever reason didn’t really provide competition for Stevens last season, and for Wales Ben Davies is far too important a centre-back for us to move out to the left. I think he has a decent enough opportunity to displace Lafferty in the squad if he proves himself to be good enough this pre-season, and if he does ok at first-team level this season a Wales call would probably happen within a year.

Semple is one who could make the step up but needs time.

Sadly he is now 12 months behind in his development due to his ACL injury.

I expect the lad to go out on loan this season at any club from National League upwards to get 40 to 50 games under his belt after a good preseason.

He is still only 19 years old.

My issue with who the next one to step up etc is that not every young player is ready for the first team at 18,19,20 years old.
We are far too quick to write young players off if they take a bit longer to get to the level necessary.

No surprise with Slater. He seems to have been going to the gym regularly throughout the summer, I've seen him and Sam Graham there quite a few times. They seem committed and I think they're both nailed on future professionals. I thought Graham might have gone with the first team but he's still very young.

It surprises me that Tyler Smith isn't going with them, he's looked more than ready to do so when I've seen him play.

When you say ‘we’ do you mean the club or the supporters?
I agree that kids develop at different ages, some, like Rooney, are blokes at 16, others still look like kids at 18. It’s like getting served in pubs, I couldn’t get served until I was nearly seventeen but my mate had been getting away with it since he was about 13.

I bow to the regular watches on here, but I saw the Swansea cup game on a stream, and these two did look a fair way off the first-team

Matt Lowton for example

 Shouldn't their step up into the first team squad be about how good they are at football more than how good they are at growing pubes

I was told by his cousin that he'd more than likely be with the first team squad for preseason, dunno what's happening with him now. I'll try to find out.

There's a clip on the official site of the pre-season training and it looks like Smith is with them. According to The Star, Sam Graham is too.
