It was noticeable how many of you the players commented on the atmosphere after Wednesday night. Words to the effect of "that was more like it."

They obviously are aware of how poor it is most of the time and would prefer we backed them a lot more.

Something needs to change to the effect of a congregated "singing section" or a cheesy ultras movement. Might not be very old school "Sheff Utd" but it would help with the atmosphere and with attracting and retaining a younger audience.
Picked up on this as well, the manager also implied similar. Won't happen though.

There's more singing coming from the south stand half the time rather than the kop, so can't be an age thing, plus for the first half hour we're trying to recover our hearing after the crap they blast out before the game!

Air rifles with ammo, throwing spears, darts

I'm not a fan of irganised displays of Fandom tbh. But it might look good?

But the obvious counter there is to point to other European countries in the same situation, where football atmospheres still thrive

Mainland Europe has an “ultra” culture, which started in Italy in the late 1960’s.
Their idea of intimidating the opposition was to recreate an atmosphere like a battle scene.
So they brought in flares, large flags, smoke bombs and huge banners.
Also their chants and attention isn’t based on what happens on the pitch.

In England we are one of the few countries that’s NEVER had an “ultra” culture.
We showed our extreme passion by wanting to fight opposing fans hence hooliganism started in England in the late 1960’s.

Agree……there needs to be discussions between the fans and clubs regards how we want to show our support.
I suppose this day and age…..trying to make your ground intimidating wouldn’t be encouraged
And things like smoke bombs, flares and flags/ banners would likely be banned. Also the problem with making a ground intimidating is that there’s more chance it can spill over into violence, so the Authorities would probably prefer a controllable cinema type of atmosphere.

Could non-singing seniors be moved from the Kop to Kop Corner / Westfield Corner?

What about the non-singing non-seniors? From my lengthy experience midway down the Kop as a singing senior, age is not the primary reason for people not singing.

It’s been pointed out earlier in the thread that the players are aware of the lack of atmosphere. That has sparked the usual debate about what other people should do to address this. How about everybody takes some personal responsibility instead, gets off their backside, and sings and shouts? Costs nothing, guaranteed to address the problem, can be implemented with immediate effect. Surely more interesting and involving than sitting there and playing with you phone, like the young folk :)

Slightly diverging from the main point but it would really help the atmosphere generally if the players would just get round the pitch quicker at the end of the game.

It’s been really flat after most victories this season as the atmosphere peters out and the energy has completely dissipated by the time the players get round (must be at least 10 minutes after the game before they start the walk round). There we can only be at most a quarter of the support hanging about to clap them off with a bit of half hearted singing.

If we end up being 2 up against Leeds in the last 5-10 mins people will be leaving in droves as there is nothing to hang around for after.

Me and my Dad were sat lower right in the kpp vs Portsmouth, when chants were trickling down from the back we were the only two joining in and those around us were looking at us as if we were mad! I then tried to start up some of the easier chants (we are bladesmen etc) and it was like I was ruining the game, was getting the kind of looks you'd get at a cinema if you were rustling crisp/sweet packets 😂

I think it's the phones (doomscrolling during the match!?!) and the phone cameras. When you might be "caught" on camera your might not shout or sing like you would otherwise.

Considering how long the Kop takes to empty they’ve got loads of time. I reckon by the time the last person has left the Kop the players are showered, dressed, and off home/in a pub with Wilder singing the Sausage Rohl song.

I wouldn’t just blame the young ‘uns for being on their phones. There are plenty 50+ round me sat their with their leather phone cases constantly flapping open.

One bloke in front of me is never off his betting app, only pausing to take a bite from the donner kebab he usually sneaks in.

What about a fat ugly bald shirtless aging old man? Doesn't even need to be from Sheffield or have supported blades first.

Or silly old tattooed bloke ringing a bell with a top hat and vest on?
I reckon we could combine all of them.
A fat ugly bald shirtless ageing old man with a bell on his top hat hitting a drum. Struggling with the vest though

It was a tongue in cheek comment, hence the smiley face. But you’re right - for so many in the ground the action on the pitch seems secondary to other activities. Baffles me.

Bring flares and flags and scarfs!!! Let’s get the Lane intimidating and full of atmosphere!!

To our new Owners get the scarfs or flags on the seats for Leeds!!

We’ve not heard much from them but this would be a statement
"Bring flares".......really...... bit of commonsense surely.

Free flags are available on John Street most if not all games. You take one and put it back after the game in an "honesty bin"
