Andrew Redmayne of the Central Coast Mariners.

Be interesting if something came of this, see how well the link up works!

Interesting that Misfud is listed as a Central Coast Mariners player of their Wiki, something to do with the Malta link?

He didn't really have too much to do to be fair. I can only remember him making one save when he came on, so I can't really give an opinion on him just yet.

Hi guys,

Supporter of the mariners here.

Redmayne is the current keeper for Australia's under 20's and we have not lost a great deal when he has played for the first team. Good shot stopper.

I don't know where the Misfud thing came from, pretty sure it was a rumour started on Australian 442 website when a poster got the name wrong. We are trialling Micheal McGlinchey from Celtic reserves (released) and someone thought it was Misfud. Would be good if it was him, but i don't think so.

Hey... welcome to the forum.

We were initially told by the linesman that the keeper was Tom Cross from Kettering, it's only when we got home and investigated the Australian link as mentioned by Leigh Bromby that we came across Redmayne :)

How are the Mariners doing and what do you think to the link ups with United? Our Hungarian friends on the forum seem to be quite positive towards us at the moment but the link with the Mariners appears more distant.

I know from previous Aussie posters that the Championship isn't very highly regarded in Oz.

I really enjoy the championship! I love the mix of youth and experience found there and the play offs are something else.It doesn't get the exposure in Aus but there is weekly games shown on Fox.

The Mariners have not been doing too well lately. We have not won a game since new years eve 08 (not including friendlies) which included a visit to the Asian Champions League for the first time. Our winless run coincided with the sale of our best player (Mile Jedinak) and also the loss of our head coach who went to be Manager at a new A-League club, the same club which Robbie Fowler is now playing for. With three weeks to go untill the start of a new season we are very keen to break the streak.

As for the link up with United, we have Nicky Travis playing for us this year and from initial reports is fitting in well with the team and should provide us something different this year. There has been much made of the link between us but not much player wise when this was thought to be the main reason behind it. I believe we have held talks with quite a few United players, but have been unable to entice them over here.

I think the biggest benifit from the link up though, is the building of the Mariners Centre of Excellence which came about through business dealings with McCabe, Lyle Gorman, who is the Mariners executive chairman, and Peter Turnbull who is the deputy chairman. I believe, but am not 100% sure, that there is a major financial link to Sheffield United or McCabe in this project. Do not quote me on that though.

There is nothing like this in Australia except for our Institute of Sports and nothing dedicated to football alone. This is a massive step forward for football in Aus and as a mariners supporter it is very exciting. It will bring some of the best talent in Aus to the mariners at an early age and hopefully we will be creating the next generation of stars for our team and for Australia. I am sure that United will be very interested in seeing what comes out of the academy as well. If all goes to plan then it should be complete by mid 2011.

Cheers for that... we don't get to hear much news from your way and it's good to hear it from an actual fan :)

Nicky Travis is a player we've seen quite a lot playing for the youth and reserve sides and he's been reserve team captain in the past. The thing that lets him down is his temperament... he can be a bit feisty at times with an awful lot of back chat to the officials that he could do with calming down if he's to ever go a long way in the game. He's come through the same system as Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton... the players we're looking to flog to Everton for £11 million. You're guaranteed a youngster who's confident on the ball and not scared to get involved.

Do keep us posted with how the Mariners are getting on. A lot of Blades fans bemoan the lack of money invested in our own team when a lot of financial backing has been put towards Chengdu, Ferencvaros and seemingly, yourselves also so it's good to hear the news from the other side.

We have a Maltese international in our squad at the mariners so i believe that is where the 'validity' came from the rumour.

Just having a look at our referral stats and we've been linked to from HERE.

THIS is a particularly interesting thread... calling us a mediocre club and a post from a supposed Blade who can't spell "Bramall".

I guess not everyone shares your enthusiasm SM :)

According to Arabmariner they own us!

I dont see where you got that from.

I think you will find that the reasoning behind the 'unbelief' in the connection between our clubs is the fact that our management relied on SUFC to provide us with a 'star' player (i use that term loosely, because star here and star there are 2 different things) to help us through the Asian Champions League. This was very unproffesional of the Mariners especially when they came out in the press saying that there would be big signings before the start of the competition.
All this lead to unrest with supporters as to why we even had a connection with SU. It was poor management by the Mariners and it painted SU as the big bad wolf when in reality they had provided us with options, but the players did not want to come to Australia.

There are many on the Marinators forum who believe exactly as i do and realise the partnership between us for what it is. Given time the partnership will bear much fruit especially with Mariners youngsters getting opportunities to trial over there. Community sentiment can only increase once their kids are getting trials or even playing in the Premier League with SU.
There will always be the naysayers, which i am sure you have on your forum, who will find the negative in any situation.
