Of course McCabe appointed Warnock too

I'm pretty sure he didn't have full control of the club when Warnock came in. It was only a few weeks after McDonald walked. Could be wrong but I seem to recall Warnock making out as though it was Dooley who was more instrumental in his appointment than anyone else.

Fit and Proper states that McCabe Dooley and Alan Laver were in charge and made the decision.

This wasn't some sort of easy take-over-a-flying-team gig he landed. Southampton, like us this season, were the bookies favourites to go up – with all the pressures and expectations that entails. Pardew was shifted on soon in. They had a start that was well below expectations and were towards the bottom at the end of September. They only got into the automatic places after Christmas, and were in an almighty battle to catch Huddersfield and Brighton in the automatic places. As we knew from the season after that, that's a seriously high pressure scenario – and by the end of it they grabbed 2nd spot. Big club, big expectations, he found a way to meet them. This season has been dismal, but let's not suggest that promotion wasn't the result of a decent fight.

As I say, I'm not denigrating Adkins' achievement that season at Southampton at all, far from it - he did superbly. But the situation he was in wasn't as translatable to ours as you suggest.

In the first instance, although they'd had a pretty poor start to the season, it was very early days when Adkins got there (they'd won 1, drawn 1 & lost 3 - 2 of those losses while they were managerless).
And, after that rocky start, it was pretty much success all the way for Adkins:
- 5 without loss after losing his first game
- a spell of 4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses
- 4 wins on the spin
- 5 without loss
- a spell of 7 wins & 1 draw
- ending the season with 6 wins on the spin.
Their record clearly kept improving over the season, but they always bounced back after losses, regularly kept clean sheets & scored 3 or more on loads of occasions.

Undeniable, that this was all at a big club & that Adkins managed his group of players well under a pressure to succeed. But, ultimately, he had very, very good players. And what is highly significant is that not one of his key players that season did he have to bring in to the club - the squad was already assembled for him.

It was, on the face of it, similar to us - big club, wallowing in the depths, high pressure to succeed. But, in the actual circumstances, very different - he didn't have to contend with ongoing adversity (because he got them motoring straight away) & he had all the players he needed there waiting for him.

I personally am shocked by this. Calling for the death of an opposition team's manager has no place in today's game. Maybe we should make a formal complaint to the Football League.

That's a brilliant own goal, singing die to somebody as they walk into that ground... Absolutely no class or dignity have they..
Embarassed for them ,genuinely
Imagine singing that to someone ,anyone
I cant think of anyone connected with their club i would wish that upon its only a game ffs

Wonder if any of our resident grunters would like to come on and defend it

Maybe they thought it was Jamie Ward?

I very much doubt it, I've just drove to my mums for Mother's Day, on the radio is a woman talking about how the area is synonymous with the disaster, and how they're planning a festival in the park to try and shed a more positive light on things, these cavemen don't just show themselves up they embarrass Sheffield with this child like insensitive behaviour....

Apparently they spat the dummy out on leppings lane again, no matter how bad our season gets or where we are, thank the Lord that you're a blade..

Let's see if radio pig and the stir make a mountain out of a mole hill about Neil's reception at swillsbrough as they do with any incident involving any blades fans

Well done Neil let us know if you needed you boat for the walk on the lake (see the sun on Sunday match report)

I was never a huge fan of NW, though I always thought he did a decent job and never called for his head. When he "departed" I thought, "Why?" - I didn't think he deserved it or that it was the best decision for the club, though obviously I thought afterwards we'd do better than we did. However, I seem to be a bigger Warnock fan now than then. I would actually have him back as manager.

They will probably be focusing on the coin throwing incident at our match.

No idea if anyone else agrees with this, but I think the reminisces for Warnock are purely based on fading memories and the sense of desperation that currently hangs over BDTBL. If I felt he had something to offer then I'd support the call for Warnock's re-instatement, but what happens when he finally retires, the same old merry-go-round of hiring, firing, hiring etc, etc? Give Adkins this summer at least, then we'll see if he brings in a set of ordinary triers who'll deliver bugger all, or the three, four, or five players who'll make a real difference. Supporter desperation is a notorious symptom that every club suffers from, just ask Arsenal fans how poor their season has been.

Which, if it happened, would be the more serious of the two. Warnock thrives on that sort of reaction, provided it stays limited to that. I imagine the Fleetwood keeper doesn't thrive on having objects cowardly thrown at him from behind the goal.

Some good quotes from NW after the game incidentally on the abuse....

"What's wrong with having a laugh? I had a laugh with some of the kids outside before the game.

"I said how sorry I was that they ended up being born Wednesdayites and that they have got to get over it and look forward in life. The dad's were laughing at me.

"I got off the bus and it was a bit of fun. I love it. Rather than a hatred, I think it's a hatred-respect, if there's anything like that.

"But I am a Blade. You're not going to get a bouquet of flowers here."

We don't need to wait until after the summer, the end of June will do.
If we still have Woolford and Hammond is offered terms then get shut.

I know what you're saying GB, but Nigel will be here beyond the end of this season, and we'll just ave to wait and see who he brings in that's going to improve this woeful season's display. As I wrote, next season is his chance to do things his way, and unless that brings promotion we'll return to the same old routine of finding a new manager.

Owl in peace...

Classic Warnock yesterday, laughing at the name calling and sending his squad of battlers out to stick it up the fancy dans.

I like the guy, I really do. His teams may not always be super entertaining, but Neil certainly is.

Know you lot are divided in your opinions of him, but had his relationship with McCabe been better and you could have got
him back to the Lane at about the time he went to Rotherham... Well, I'd have put money on United making the playoffs.

Do you deny he is doing a shocking job ,and what foundations do you think he has laid for next season ?
I think Adkins has already "signed" some players for this summer which would make it awkward if we have a different manager for next season . Been told that a lot of players have already signed pre-contracts since January (I dont mean just for us)

Fit and Proper states that McCabe Dooley and Alan Laver were in charge and made the decision.
Correct, McCabe was very keen on him coming to us. After the 3-3 draw at Bury in Dec 1998 in front of the Sky tv cameras McCabe presented a Blade tie to Warnock in the post match interview

I hope your right, trust its a good source?
If we are keeping Adkins I'd be pleased that he has gone and got some targets on pre-contracts, I assume that's what you mean?
Are these players has beens like Hammond or up and coming and raring to go?

What worries me Silent is your 'Been told that a lot of players have already signed pre-contracts since January (I don't mean just for us)'

The only player we need to get to sign a new contract is Long. The rest can go, I hope those that have signed pre-contracts have not done so with us?

Spill the beans Silent.

Honestly I dont know who we have signed. Adkins has already said in an interview a week or two ago that recruitment plans for this summer are already in place ( or something like that). Many clubs have realised they have been making mistakes in their summer recruitment policy because they didnt act as early as January so more clubs are now making plans as early as they can
