Len Allchurch (I think) in the middle of those standing.

Don't know the lad right at the front.

Joe Shaw immediately behind him.

The rest, left to right, Cec Coldwell, Graham Shaw, Brian Richardson (part-hidden), Hodgy, Doc Pace, don't know the bloke extreme right.

My guess

back Gerry Summers, Len Allchurch, Barry Hartle/ Billy Russell??
front Cec Coldwell, Graham Shaw, Brian Richardson, Joe Shaw, Hodgy, Doc Pace, Simpson?
Billy Hodgson at the front

I think the photo is a freebie issued by the Star on the Blades getting promotion to Div 1. I had this pinned above my bed for years.

all correct and it is Billy Russell not Barry Hartle. The photo was taken after our 3-1 at home to Derby County. In "The First 100 years" book there is a photo of Doc Pace scoring in that game

Cyprus , was it against Derby or Middlesborough .

Year after did we play Manchester United twice in 2 days .

Yup. 23/4/62 at OT. 24/4/62 at BDTBL. It was common back then to play 'double-headers' on consecutive (Bank Holiday) days. Link.

...............and "squad", "rotation", "tired", "bad", "pitch", "injured" were all separate words from a dictionary and never used in the same sentence.

We were not champions either. We finished 2nd.

We came second to Ipswich and top right was Billy Russell. In the second pic, it says George Coldwell instead of Cecil as everyone knew him then. Does anyone know which was his real name? Was Cecil just a nickname?

His real name was George and Cec was his nickname according to Complete records book

It was after the Derby match played in midweek. We clinched promotion with two games to spare. The following Saturday we lost 3-1 at Bristol rovers then 7 days later beat Middlesbrough by 4-1 at BDTBL (LSF's first match)

Just checked Complete Records book. Hodgy's save from Bobby Charlton's penalty was in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford a year later not in your first match

As I remember him, he looked a bit like cart-horse but was a good full-back, a great captain and quite a good stand-in manager too. I remember a game in particular where he had the great Bobby Charlton in his pocket for 80 minutes. Sir Bobby won the game for his team in the other 10.

'Doc' Pace rings a (very) slight bell in my memory, Silent. Did he score in the 23/4/62 game?

And talking of players from that era, Tony and Barry Wagstaffe. I vaguely remember Tony as being utterly useless!

Yes, Doc scored in your first match. Our team was Hodgkinson, Coldwell, G.Shaw, Richardson, J.Shaw, Matthewson, Allchurch, Kettleborough, Pace, Hodgson, Simpson.

My dad thought Tony Wagstaff looked promising when he started being a regular in the 1st team from March 1963 and played in 37 league matches in 1963-64 season scoring 9 goals. The club advised him to try and put some weight on (there was a photo of him in Morning Telegraph with a large plateful of food and he was holding a fork and opening his mouth as if he was trying to get all the food in!) but he remained thin! He was in and out of the 1st team for the next 3 seasons and got a lot of stick from the crowd for not being physical enough. He played in only 12 league matches in total in 1967-68 and 1968-69 seasons before Arthur Rowley sold him to Reading. My dad said Barry wasnt a 1st division class defender

I'll check with my Mum about where Cec came from, she grew up in the same small village as him and as far as I am aware he was always Cecil to the family. We also had his brother Cedric on our books, and apparently he was the more talented player but a bit wayward in lifestyle, not sure if he ever played for the first team.

I was of the same opinion of Tony Wagstaff. But maybe a few years ago (possibly on this site) there was some old footage of us playing away at West Ham or Arsensl and Tony Wagstaff appeared as an accomplished midfielder. Real eye opener.

Must admit I have never heard of Cec being referred to as George. That's a new one to me.

Indeed Silent, it was my first game at the Lane, your retention of facts is amazing!
Great thread this, my knowledge of the Blades and their players is without doubt, the strongest during this period discussed here. Young minds retain knowledge better?
I certainly saw Cec Coldwell referred to as George on occasions, usually in photos in football mags or cigarette or chewing gum cards. Always thought it was his first name and Cecil his second name, I'm probably wrong on that? Not sure if Cec's son reads this site and might confirm the real fact?
Tony Wagstaff - my first memory of him is in fact his debut which was at the aforementioned Middlesbrough game. His debut meant that blokes were soft on him and he obviously at 17 received patience and interest from the crowd. It soon changed and he quickly became the target for cat calls and totally unfair stick.
I saw him as a skilful but lightweight inside forward who had a perceptive pass and good vision. However, his frame meant he lacked physical presence and this angered the macho 'get stuck in' brigade. His confidence visibly disappeared and he went on to have a decent career at Reading in the lower divisions.
It was this harsh unfair treatment of TW that set me on a career of defending the underdog against the constant shite they receive from football crowds :-)
