The post by Billyblade in the Why do we bother thread of Keenzy's got me thinking.

............We need opinions like Beightonblades to keep the forum lively.
It's probably the most factually correct post on here that anyone will read for quite a while. There are indeed certain members who post on here who I really disagree with most of the time, but aren't those threads with differences of opinion usually the best to read?

A thread that was all "We were great/shite/indifferent" that we all agreed on would be rather pointless. I know we all like to hear and read that other people think we're right and great, but the debate is usually furthered by someone arguing with you, not from one of those nodding dogs that only ever agree.

It's true that beightonblade and, from yesteryear Sharpy, can post comments that get people arguing, but surely that's the point of a forum?

Forum definition -
a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
b. A public meeting place for open discussion.
c. A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.

A quote attributed to Voltaire - "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
I certainly think that some posters on here might be as mad as a goose on stilts, but I want them to be able to keep saying what they say.

I know this might not be the appropriate place to put this, but I think that as our main discussions on here are with regards to all things United, then it'll do.

Having been on several football forums, including 606 back in the old days when it was good, I firmly believe this is the best Blades one and possibly one of the best football sites in the country. I can't speak for other clubs much as I've only seen a few, but (apart from the professional layout) the main thing that makes this forum stand out is the quality of the debates.
It's thanks to, not in spite of, the posters who do more than just post "You're right" that this is the case.
We have many good contributors to this site, so please keep disagreeing and arguing. It's one of the reasons I switch my computer on in the first place.

Are you just trying to get nominated for best post? :)

Meh I dont care I will nominate you anyway even if your post has links to wikpedia. :D

SV, you sir are a buffoon of the highest order and ought to be publicly flogged in Orchard Square by Christa Ackroyd for your ridiculous opinions!

(Well, it'd be besides the point if I said I agreed... dunno about this professional business though :D)

The thing I've always tried to stress is the word "respect". I might think that everyone on here is a raging fuckwit (;)), but there are ways to say it nicely.

Discussion, not argument. The Birmingham match thread is so far, a perfect example of how to do it. Belittling or outright abusing someone is how not to do it. It adds no credence to whatever a poster might be saying, because they just come across as a bit of a nob :)

Open discussion is what we encourage but when things get nasty, we have to get involved and start censoring. I know I speak for both Foxy and myself when I say we absolutely hate doing it because we've been on certain forums (!) where as soon as you say anything the admin disagrees with, your post disappears into the ether.

I do find it a nice place to be and that is because of the quality and range of posts and opinions. All I can say is, keep it up ladies and gents.

What I can't cope with is SV being sensible.

Are you sober SV? If so put it right!!

:D:D:D

SV, you have very elequantly expanded on a point I merely touched on, but should have given a bit more mileage to. (I would have too, if I hadn't digressed intro talking about the match itself!)

I too have read other Blades forums and the one that was the most interesting had people on it with 100% negative views (cat-kickers) and it was fun reading the rest of the members laying into them (in a nice way of course). It was full of lively debate. There was a provocative member on there called Beightonblade too, coincidence?

The quote from Voltaire hit the nail on the head. My hat goes off to Beightonblade and anyone else of his ilk who will not bow to pressure when he has his opinions. Its too easy to shut the fuck up when the pack rounds on you, its much harder to keep plugging away. You might not agree with the opinions but it makes for an interesting debate.

For those of you less well-read as our learned friend, I will give you another quote from those literary giants, Groove Armada (!)

"If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other"

Profound?, maybe (however the next line is " I know a fella's good for the Moolah"!, I know:D)

Lets keep the posts coming from all angles and opinions or this forum is gonna get cliquey. I don't want that, cos its the best one I've been on. Well done, Foxy and Linz.

Chuff, we'll not see him for weeks now, he'll be locked away dreaming about that! And when he eventually emerges......................

a good debate is one thing, but calling for a managers head after 1 game in due to a last minute goal isn't and repeating the same thing over and over isn't a debate either. BB does this alot and avoids lots of questions in the debate, making the Lively forum thread into which you cant advance past the same quote.

Sharpy at least debated.
