I don't think many will argue it was the right decision at the time to relieve Mr Warnock of his duties. What money he was given for new players was wasted and relegation from a position of relative safety tipped the balance. Unfortunately this was the last decision our chairman got right. At the time had McCabe listened to anyone but our Turry he may have realised that appointing Mr Robson as a replacement should not have been an option, but the rest is history and even worse was to follow with the appointment of yes man Blackwell.
Overnight we became a selling club but the real damage was done by the unbelievably poor aquisitions made by Blackwell and the final insult came in the handing out of lucrative contracts to Morgan, Monty, Quinn and Cresswell, a sure sign the plot had well and truly been lost. A change was inevitable and why we chose to wait until two games into the new season only Mccabe knows.
Incredibly the lesson had still not been learnt. Not only did McCabe then choose the cheapest of options but appointed a management team comprising two thirds of the previous regime, and in Speed a leader with no management experience. Most very quickly realised that under Speed and with no money to spend this was going to be relegation season and until now one with no hope.
We may however, through more luck than judgement, been given a lifeline. Wales have come in for our manager and his assistant, which means we can move them on without costly compensation, and at the same time Sam Allardyce has become available. Now I know there are many who will say we have no chance of getting this man but given the right encouragement I think he would see it as a perfect opportunity to prove some people wrong. It may also be McCabe's last opportunity to build a few bridges with the fans by appointing someone capable of re-kindling the passion which has gone missing throughout the club. Allardyce has done it before at Bolton with little resource and I'm sure he could do it again at a club that will offer greater support and potential.
We cannot afford to make another mistake, the opportunity is there but I wonder if the board have the balls to go for it.
