I don't think many will argue it was the right decision at the time to relieve Mr Warnock of his duties. What money he was given for new players was wasted and relegation from a position of relative safety tipped the balance. Unfortunately this was the last decision our chairman got right. At the time had McCabe listened to anyone but our Turry he may have realised that appointing Mr Robson as a replacement should not have been an option, but the rest is history and even worse was to follow with the appointment of yes man Blackwell.

Overnight we became a selling club but the real damage was done by the unbelievably poor aquisitions made by Blackwell and the final insult came in the handing out of lucrative contracts to Morgan, Monty, Quinn and Cresswell, a sure sign the plot had well and truly been lost. A change was inevitable and why we chose to wait until two games into the new season only Mccabe knows.

Incredibly the lesson had still not been learnt. Not only did McCabe then choose the cheapest of options but appointed a management team comprising two thirds of the previous regime, and in Speed a leader with no management experience. Most very quickly realised that under Speed and with no money to spend this was going to be relegation season and until now one with no hope.

We may however, through more luck than judgement, been given a lifeline. Wales have come in for our manager and his assistant, which means we can move them on without costly compensation, and at the same time Sam Allardyce has become available. Now I know there are many who will say we have no chance of getting this man but given the right encouragement I think he would see it as a perfect opportunity to prove some people wrong. It may also be McCabe's last opportunity to build a few bridges with the fans by appointing someone capable of re-kindling the passion which has gone missing throughout the club. Allardyce has done it before at Bolton with little resource and I'm sure he could do it again at a club that will offer greater support and potential.

We cannot afford to make another mistake, the opportunity is there but I wonder if the board have the balls to go for it.

Allardyce, above his massive wage demands, works on the principles of masses of backroom staff - doctors, scientists, physio's, psychologists, specific coaches for every discipline - the lot.

Basically, he does things properly - but all that comes at a premium - and thats exactly why he wont be stepping anywhere near Bramall Lane.

What'll be interesting is who's call exactly this is, McCabe's or the new guy?

Assuming Wales announce the decision to take Speed today (1400pm?) then what perfect timing for the AGM this weekend....

I get the feeling that we won't rush the appointment, not because its right, but to prevent a backlash on Saturday.

Then on Monday, they'll appoint Phil Brown and Megson

Kevin McCabe owns and runs Sheffield United, it won't be anyone else's decision.

Allardyce put himself out of the running last time we looked for a manager, when we had money.
I see nothing now that will make him change his mind.

Also, I don't agree with the notion that Warnock should have gone.

Allardyce has come out of the Blackburn farce very well and his reputation is still intact.

Even if we paid him the going rate why would he risk his reputation at a club in freefall, lacking any leadership from the top down? The only way he'd even consider it is if McCabe assured him he would have money to spend and that we were serious about trying to get promotion. So I think we can forget it.

Big Sam has very limited job opportunities, despite thinking he could manage Real Madrid or England.

His "style" goes before him like Jordans placcy tits.

None of the big boys with real money will touch him with a barge pole. Teams such as Spurs/Everton/West Ham have a reputation to hang on to (whether real or imagined) and so won't use him having seen what happened at Newcastle.
This leaves him with middling Premiership teams (Bolton/Blackburn/Wigan/Blackpool/Wolves/Sunderland types) who are simply desperate to stay in the Prem and do nothing else EVER. Realistically, at this time only Wigan (or maybe Wolves) would go for him.

This leaves him with a situation similar to when he took charge at Bolton. Championship nobodys looking for a new vision however ugly it might be. We fit the bill ideally.
I wouldn't be surprised if the fraudster of S6 hasn't got him on his radar as well.
